Introduction. Probiotics are live microorganisms which, administered in appropriate amounts, have a beneficial effect on human health. Food products that contain these microorganisms are known as natural probiotics. Probiotic food include the group of dairy products in which fermented milk products are majority. Objective. The aim of the study is to review current data and summarize knowledge on the effects of consumption of dairy probiotics on human health. The review also aims at discussing the potential of these health-supporting microorganisms as a prevention factor against civilization diseases. State of knowledge. Consumption of probiotic food, especially natural dairy probiotic food, may have a positive effect on health due to the presence of probiotic bacteria or by the presence of their metabolites (postbiotics) demonstrating bioactive effects. The intake of these products is associated with the improvement of parameters such as lipid profile, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular risk parameters, or presents protective effect on bones. Studies show a correlation between the consumption of natural probiotics and reduction in duration of diarrhea or alleviation of the course of inflammatory bowel diseases. Conclusion. The influence of natural dairy probiotics consumption on the state of health has recently been broadly investigated. Regular consumption of these products has shown beneficial effect on gut microbiota and on a wide range of health parameters. However, further studies are necessary to draw a precise conclusion.

Opis:
Introduction. pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related syndrome characterized by hypertension and proteinuria that makes its appearance after 20 weeks of gestation. It develops approximately in 2–10% of all pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia, as a severe complication during pregnancy, is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Objectives. The aim of the study was to assess the possibility of utilizing selected microRNAs at the earliest possible stage as safe biomarkers of severe complications of pregnancy, such as pre-eclampsia. State of konowledge. Nowadays, there are many trials aimed at finding effective methods for pre-eclampsia prediction at the early stage of pregnancy, before the onset of clinical signs. Although the precise pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia remains unknown, early prediction of the syndrome would allow the initiation of proper preventive therapy to savethe mother and future child. Current strategies for pre-eclampsia prediction are assessments of combinations of maternal risk factors, ultrasound parameters and different biomarkers (proteins, circulating cell free DNA and microRNAs). Studies of microRNAs in particular offer great potential for diagnosis and therapy in pregnancy-related disorders. The fraction of specific placenta-related circulating microRNAs in the serum of pregnant women who present symptoms of pre-eclampsia after 20 weeks of gestation, and show the strongest changes in the level, can play an important role in the development of placenta-related complications. Conclusion. Further research into the level of microRNAs in the blood serum of pregnant women with pre-eclampsia will allow a practical way of utilizing selected microRNAs at the earliest possible stage as safe biomarkers of severe complications of pregnancy.

Search for the preventive measures reducing the accumulation of mycotoxin producers in food raw material was carried out. Active ventilation was used; the impact of the electro-chemically activated air (ozone) and electro-chemically activated water (anolyte) on the micromycetes prevailing in grain raw material for food (GRMF) was determined. The GRMF was dried by active ventilation using the ozone-air mixture. Ozone (concentration 1250 ppb) disinfects the surface of the raw material and creates conditions unfavourable for the increase of mycobiotic contamination in drying upper layers of the grain mound. Within 8 days the contamination of GRMF in a mound decreased by 50%, while in its lower layers – more than 3 times. Ventilation of the mound with the above-mentioned concentration of the ozone-air mixture has ceased the active functioning of Fusarium avenaceum, F. graminearum, F. poae, F. solani, F. tricinctum F. sporotrichioides micromycetes and has considerably retarded the development of Alternaria alternata and other fungi. Anolyte (0.05% of chlorine concentration) reduced the mycobiotic contamination of GRMF by almost 2.5 times. The optimal treatment duration is from 0.5 to 1 hour. The optimal technical parameters, allowing the use of these measures for the preparation of grain food safety technologies, were elaborated; they are designed for more efficient protection of human health against micromycetes and their toxic metabolites, which are abundantly produced and released into the environment.

Introduction. The issue of inequalities in the use of health services and health inequalities between urban and rural dwellers is a subject of numerous scientific reports, but similar publications on dental health are scarce. Objective. The aim of this study is to assess the correlations between the use or non-use of dental services and the classical socio-economic factors (SES) in urban and rural groups in a representative population of Poland. Materials and method. The analysis consisted in desk research based on a questionnaire survey conducted by the Central Statistical Office of Poland on 12,532 individuals (urban areas – 6411, rural areas – 6121) in 2013. The chi-squared test, multivariate and univariate logistic regression models were applied. Results. There were major differences in the use of dental services depending on income level, education and source of income among rural and urban populations, as well as differences between these populations. Urban dwellers had 1.34 times greater odds of using dental services than rural ones (95% CI: 1.20–1.51). In the case of the highest income group, the odds were 3.26 (95% CI 2.21–4.83) times greater in cities and 2.07 (95% CI 1.51–2.85) times greater in villages than the odds in the lowest income group. In the highest education group, the odds were 1.58 (95% CI 1.17–2.13) times greater in urban areas and 2.08 (95% CI 1.48–2.91) times greater in rural areas than the odds in the lowest education group. Conclusions. There are considerable inequalities in the use of dental services, yet the differences in non-use, despite such a need, are less evident. This could imply that health disparities arise not only from economic constraints and unavailability of health care, but also from health attitudes and behaviours.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The aim of the study was assessment of the internal consistency and accuracy of the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List – 40 v. GP (ISEL-40 v. GP) in a group of mothers of healthy children and in a group of mothers of children with a medical history, and presentation of the initial research results. Materials and method. A group of 230 mothers were involved in the research: 57 mothers of healthy children, 26 mothers of infants with a perinatal medical history, as well as 147 mothers of hospitalized children. The method of a diagnostic survey with standardized tools, such as the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL-40 v. GP), Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) and the authors’ own questionnaire was utilized. Results. Analysis of the research results suggests satisfactory internal consistency of the ISEL-40 v. GP in the researched group (α=0.86). It was also noticed that internal consistency of the subscales varied. The subscales of tangible support (α=0.79) and belonging support (α=0.73) obtained acceptable values. Internal consistency of self-esteem support (α=0.51) and appraisal support (α=0.62) was too low to be recommended for individual and scientific use. An attempt to modify the number of items did not come up to expectations in terms of the subscales internal consistency. Social support in mothers of healthy and ill children was moderate (29.92 – 33.45 points) and no statistically significant differences in their perception of the support were observed. Conclusions. In the research on a group of mothers of healthy and ill children it is recommended to use only a social support indicator based on the general result of the ISEL-40 v. GP. Further research aimed at verification of the theoretical structure of the Polish version of the ISEL-40 v. GP is advised.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the third most commonly diagnosed gynecological cancer among women worldwide and the second most common in Poland. Early-stage ovarian cancer is still very difficult to diagnose and concerns only about 20–30% of all ovarian cancers. Most cases (approximately 70%) of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at more advanced stages (III and IV). The aim of the review is to bring closer new potential biological markers – Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Brief description of the state of knowledge. To date, the best serum marker for ovarian cancer is Ca-125, but its use as a screening marker is limited due to high false positive rates. Ca-125 could be elevated in other benign and malignant conditions. Serum concentrations of Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 are higher in the advanced stagegroup (Stage III and IV), in comparison to the early stage group (Stage I and II) in serous ovarian cancer, and can reflect the tumour burden. Analysis showed that Nidogens discriminate against patients with serous ovarian carcinomas from healthy controls. The concentrations of both of them correlate with concentration Ca-125, especially Nidogen-2. The above biomarkers were compared with the results of the preoperative detection of ovarian cancer that are often used in clinical practice – IOTA Simple Rules, Risk of Malignancy Index and Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm. Conclusions. Nidogen-1 and Nidogen-2 are new promising biomarkers for ovarian cancer, especially for the serous type, although there is still a need for prospective studies proving their good diagnostic value.

Introduction and objective. There is a significantly higher risk of lipid disorders occurrence, including atherogenic dyslipidemia in women after menopause than it is in general population. The aim of the work was to investigate the correlation between health behaviours and the occurrence of lipid disorders in women after menopause working in agriculture. Material and methods. The study was conducted in years 2015–2016 and included 843 post-menopausal women working in agriculture. The following were used: a questionnaire including socio-demographic data, laboratory lipid tests, inventory of health behaviours. The following were estimated: logistic regression models for serum lipids concentration versus frequency of health behaviours in the examined women. Results. Adverse lipid profile was found in over a half of post-menopausal women working in agriculture, whereas the frequency of health behaviours were estimated at the average level, although the frequency of correct eating habits and health practices was significantly lower than preventive behaviours and positive psychological attitudes. A correlation was found between the frequency of health behaviours and the occurrence of lipid disorders in women after menopause working in agriculture: more frequent health practices co-existed with the lower concentration of total cholesterol and a higher concentration of HDL-cholesterol, more frequent preventive behaviours co-existed with lower concentration of LDL-cholesterol. Women with higher concentration of triglycerides undertook pro-health practices relatively more often. Conclusions. The study revealed a high prevalence of lipid disorders in postmenopausal women working in agriculture. More effective health education programmes are necessary in the area of reduction the risk factors of CVD in the population of women working in agriculture.
