Opis:
Objectve: Person-Environment fit (P-E fit) paradigm, seems to be especially useful in explaining phenomena related to work attitudes and occupational health. The study explores the relationship between a specific facet of P-E fit as Person-Organization fit (P-O fit) and health. Materials and Methods: Research was conducted on the random sample of 600 employees. Person-Organization Fit Questionnaire was used to asses the level of Person-Organization fit; mental health status was measured by General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28); and items from Work Ability Index allowed for evaluation of somatic health. Data was analyzed using non parametric statistical tests. The predictive value of P-O fit for various aspects of health was checked by means of linear regression models. Results: A comparison between the groups distinguished on the basis of their somatic and mental health indicators showed significant differences in the level of overall P-O fit (χ² = 23.178; p < 0.001) and its subdimensions: for complementary fit (χ² = 29.272; p < 0.001), supplementary fit (χ² = 23.059; p < 0.001), and identification with organization (χ² = 8.688; p = 0.034). From the perspective of mental health, supplementary P-O fit seems to be important for men’s well-being and explains almost 9% of variance in GHQ-28 scores, while in women, complementary fit (5% explained variance in women’s GHQ score) and identification with organization (1% explained variance in GHQ score) are significant predictors of mental well-being. Interestingly, better supplementary and complementary fit are related to better mental health, but stronger identification with organization in women produces adverse effect on their mental health. Conclusions: The results show that obtaining the optimal level of P-O fit can be beneficial not only for the organization (e.g. lower turnover, better work effectiveness and commitment), but also for the employees themselves. Optimal level of P-O fit can be considered as a factor maintaining workers’ health. However, prospective research is needed to confirm the results obtained in this exploratory study.

Opis:
Objectives: The aim of the presented research was to explore the links between complementary and supplementary dimensions of Person-Organization fit (P-O fit), organizational identification (OI) and negative (WHI-) versus positive (WHI+) work-home interactions. It was assumed that both complementary and supplementary P-O fit and OI were positively related to WHI+ and negatively to WHI-. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on a large sample of Polish blue and white collar workers. The subjects were interviewed by means of questionnaires measuring: supplementary and complementary dimensions of P-O fit, OI and WHI. General work ability and demographic variables were also controlled in the study, and statistical analysis of ANOVA, pairwise comparison as well as regression were performed. Results: P-O fit and OI differentiated the subjects in terms of WHI. For women supplementary fit was a significant predictor of WHI- and explained 12% of its variance, for men it was complementary fit with the number of working days per week and the level of education, which explained 22% of variance. Supplementary fit and OI explained 16% of WHI+ variance in women; OI, tenure at the main place of employment and the level of education explained 8% of WHI+ variance in men. Conclusions: It has been proven that not only are the effects of P-O fit and OI limited to the work environment but they also permeate boundaries between work and home and influence private life - good level of P-O fit and good OI play facilitating role in the positive spillover between work and home. Gender differences in the significance and predictive values of P-O fit and OI for WHI were also found. The innovative aspect of the work is the inclusion of P-O fit and OI in the range of significant predictors of work-home interaction. The results can serve as rationale for employers that improvement of P-O fit and employees' organizational identification should be included in work-life balance programs.

Opis:
Background: Musculoskeletal disorders have serious impact on the profession of dentistry. There is common occurrence of pain due to incorrect posture in dental professionals. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies may cast a new light on preventing and intercepting musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). An epidemiological study was conducted in an effort to contribute to the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of MSD at dentists using CAM as a treatment and preventive modality for MSD and to compare job/career satisfaction between dentists who use CAM and conventional therapy (CT). Material and Methods: Dentists registered in Uttrakhand state, India, under the Dental Council of India and registered members of the Indian Dental Association, Uttrakhand branch (N = 1496) were surveyed. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 17. Results: A response rate of 84% (N = 1257) was obtained, revealing that 90% (N = 1131) had the problem of MSD. Seventy three percentage (N = 826) of dentists with MSD reported the use of CAM and CT. Complementary and alternative medicine users reported greater overall health (72.7% vs. 51%, p < 0.001), job satisfaction (61.2% vs. 35%, p < 0.001) and work efficiency compared to CT users. Conclusions: Complementary and alternative medicine therapies may improve quality of life, reduce work interruption and enhance job satisfaction for dentists who suffers from MSD. Through the course of their studies, dentists should be equipped with knowledge on ergonomics and CAM therapies, such as yoga and others, to help them prevent musculoskeletal disorders more effectively. Terapie z zakresu medycyny komplementarnej i alternatywnej (complementary and alternative medicine - CAM) mogą rzucić nowe światło na zapobieganie zaburzeniom mięśniowo-szkieletowym (musculoskeletal disorders - MSD). Celem badania było ustalenie, czy w przypadku MSD dentyści korzystają z medycyny alternatywnej. Porównano także satysfakcję zawodową dentystów, którzy stosują terapie CAM i tych korzystających z terapii konwencjonalnej. Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięli udział dentyści zarejestrowani w regionie Uttrakhand (Indie) w Radzie Dentystycznej Indii i będący członkami Indyjskiego Towarzystwa Dentystycznego (oddział Uttrakhand) (N = 1496). Analizy statystyczne przeprowadzono za pomocą pakietu SPSS 17. Wyniki: Wskaźnik odpowiedzi wyniósł 84% (N = 1257). Aż 90% (N = 1131) respondentów cierpiało z powodu MSD. Korzystanie z CAM i terapii konwencjonalnej zgłosiło 73% (N = 826) dentystów biorących udział w badaniu, u których występowały MSD. Osoby stosujące CAM w porównaniu z osobami leczącymi się konwencjonalnie zgłaszały lepszy ogólny stan zdrowia (72,7% vs 51%, p < 0,001), wyższy poziom satysfakcji zawodowej (61,2% vs 35%, p < 0,001) i były w stanie pracować w takim wymiarze czasu, w jakim chciały (56,8% vs. 67%, p < 0,001) Wnioski: Terapie CAM mogą poprawić jakość życia, zredukować przerwy w pracy i zwiększyć satysfakcję zawodową u dentystów cierpiących na MSD. Już na etapie studiów należy przekazać dentystom wiedzę z zakresu ergonomii oraz terapii CAM, żeby potrafili skuteczniej zapobiegać wystąpieniu zaburzeń mięśniowo-szkieletowych. Opis:
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have remarkable immunomodulatory properties, low immunogenicity, and paracrine properties as well as the ability to differentiate into multiple cell lines. These properties make them potential candidates for clinical applications in the treatment of neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and lung diseases, which may be occupational diseases. Preclinical studies using experimental animal models have demonstrated regenerative properties of MSCs in diseases such as silicosis and occupational asthma. Currently, treatment of the novel disease COVID-19 could be enhanced by using MSC therapies. This disease affects many professional groups with great intensity and its consequences might be considered as an occupational disease. It is a significant public health problem and a therapeutic challenge. Despite the development of vaccines against COVID-19, there is growing concern about the emergence of new mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in addition to the known alpha, beta, gamma, and delta variants. There is still no effective COVID-19 treatment and the existing ones only play a supporting role. MSCs offer treatment possibilities as an alternative or complementary therapy. The clinical trials to date using MSCs in patients with COVID-19 give hope for the safe and effective use of this stem cell population.
