The cartographic documents covering railway areas require additional specifi c cartographic symbols and codes because of the diversity of the existing railway infrastructure elements. Cartographic symbols represent objects featured in maps and schematic plans, according to their attribute characteristics and the scale of a given map. A cartographic code is a designation assigned to cartographic symbols featured in maps in scale ranges of 1:500 to 1:5000. The main purpose of the conducted study was to determine the extent of uniformity of cartographic symbols and codes used in railway areas in the light of the relevant applicable legal regulations, technical standards, industry-specifi c manuals, and the perception of space as presented in the cartographic documentation of railway areas. The condition of cartographic symbols and codes has been analysed, taking the characteristics of the target audience of cartographic documents as well as the intended use and content of such documents into consideration. The paper describes the patterns behind the processes of coding real elements of railway infrastructure in cartographic documents, and off ers tables including fi ndings of comparative analyses of cartographic symbols and codes according to the following requirements: • GK-1 of the technical standard “Organisation and performance of measurements in railway land surveying”, • Regulation of the Minister of Administration and Digitization of 2 November 2015 on the topographic objects database and the principal map, • Ig-10 (D-27) instruction on developing and updating schematic plans. The conducted studies have revealed a lack of consistency and discrepancies among the cartographic symbols and codes used and adopted in railway areas. These symbols should be consistent and harmonised with other symbols and elements of cartographic documents in order to function as a harmonious whole. It has also been found that there are no defi nitions for characteristic cartographic symbols and codes found across railway infrastructure elements. The paper offers new original cartographic symbols and codes for those elements which have not been defi ned so far. New definitions cover: animal protection device and stabilised fixed points of reference for observing the areas susceptible to creep of rails in a continuous welded track. The findings of the conducted studies contribute to the subjects raised in the contemporary domain of civil engineering and railway transport. The article contains author’s insights and conclusions. The paper has been developed as part of AGH’s statutory research no. 11.11.150.005.

The article discusses the train signaling system developed in OSŻD. The traffic light signaling currently used on the network managed by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. (Polish Railway Lines) is also described. A proposal of traffic light signals is presented, enabling the transmission of information on travel speeds on the turning tracks of turnouts operated on the PKP PLK S.A. network. The proposed signaling has been developed based on OSŻD (in Rus. Организация со-трудничества железных дорог – ОСЖД) signaling. The number of signals needed was obtained by introducing a second yellow light strip and optionally two different flashing frequencies.

W artykule przedstawiono system wspomagający ocenę nierówności poziomych w rozjazdach. Kryteriami oceny są parametry kinematyczne oraz wielkość proporcjonalna do dyssypacji energii kinetycznej. Omówiono podstawy teoretyczne systemu oraz jego działanie i podano przykłady obliczeń. Przedstawiono również metodę ustalania odchyłek nierówności poziomych.
The paper presents system for supporting assessment of horizontal irregularities in railway switch points. Criteria applied for assessment comprise kinetic parameters and quantity that is proportional to dissipation of kinetic energy. Theoretical basis of the system, its operation were described and examples of calculations given. Method for determination of irregularity deviations is given.

The article presents the results of analyses of the economic and transport links between the south-western part of the Łódzkie Province and its capital, the city of Łódź, carried out for a study prepared by the Railway Institute. Railway network deficiencies preventing the efficient use of railway transport of passengers and cargo are outlined. An analysis of the potential utilization of the fact that the TEN-T runs through the province is carried out and a program of the necessary infrastructural projects is also proposed. Improving the accessibility of the region is analyzed in view of the multimodality of railway, bus, and private transport systems in combination with a system of interchanges and parking lots. This approach allows the synergy effects of the particular elements of the transport system to be evaluated.

The article presents the influence of sulfur as a harmful chemical element in railway elements working under load. The Baumann test shows the segregation of sulfur in the cross-section of the wheelset axle pivot, rail, wheel tyre and coupling elements. The tests were carried out in accordance with the standards PN-87/H-05414, ISO 4968:1979, PN EN 13674-1 + A1:2017, PN EN 13261: 2011, PN-84/H-84027/06, PN-EN 10083-3: 2006 and PN-EN 15566:2016-11, which require the determination of sulfur content and its distribution in those elements.

Artykuł charakteryzuje istniejące kolejowe połączenia do portów lotniczych w Polsce, w aspekcie parametrów infrastruktury transportowej oraz oferowanych usług przewozowych na przykładzie trzech portów lotniczych zlokalizowanych w Krakowie, Warszawie oraz Lublinie. W rozdziale „Przewozy pasażerskie w Polsce, a jakość infrastruktury kolejowej” podano wielkości przewozów pasażerskich w poszczególnych gałęziach transportu zbiorowego od 1990 roku oraz wykazano zależność spadku przewozów kolejowych od jakości infrastruktury kolejowej. Rozdział „Polityka transportowa a pasażerskie połączenia intermodalne” traktuje o tendencjach europejskich i krajowych w tworzeniu spójnej sieci transportowej wykorzystującej różne środki transportu z ukierunkowaniem na budowę połączeń transportu kolejowego i lotniczego. W rozdziale „Ruch pasażerski na polskich lotniskach” zaprezentowano wyniki prowadzonej działalności operacyjnej w poszczególnych portach lotniczych, dotyczące liczby obsłużonych pasażerów oraz wykonanych operacji lotniczych w latach 2009–2012. Dodatkowo przedstawiono wielkości przewozowe w podziale na ruch krajowy i międzynarodowy oraz regularny i czarterowy. Rozdział „Oferta kolejowa w obsłudze polskich portów lotniczych” przedstawia podstawowe parametry infrastruktury kolejowej oraz ofertę transportu szynowego w dojazdach do następujących lotnisk: Kraków Balice, Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina oraz Lublin–Świdnik. Ofertę przewoźników autobusowych zaprezentowano w rozdziale „Kolej wobec konkurencji transportu autobusowego”, w którym również dokonano porównania podstawowych czynników oferty przewozowej operatorów kolejowych oraz autobusowych, w tym liczby linii dowozowych, dobowej liczby kursów, czasu przejazdu i ceny biletu. W podsumowaniu przedstawiono wyniki i wnioski z przeprowadzonych analiz oraz prognozy popytu na pasażerski ruch lotniczy do 2030 roku.
This paper examines existing rail links to the Airports in Poland from the aspect of the parameters of transport infrastructure and the offered transport services. The analysis concerns three airports located in Kraków, Warszawa, and Lublin. In Section "Passenger Transport and the Railway Infrastructure" number of passengers that have been carried by individual branches of public transport since 1990 was presented. Furthermore, relationship between decreases in the volume of railway traffic versus quality of the railway infrastructure was shown. Section "Transport Policy and Intermodal Passenger Connections" discusses European and domestic trends towards establishing coherent transport network using various means of transport and oriented at creation of the links between railway and air transport systems. In the part describing passenger traffic in Polish airports the results of operation activities in individual airports and namely the numbers of attended passengers and executed flight operations in the years 2009-2012 were presented. Moreover, passenger transport figures were shown with the division to domestic and international as well as regular and charter traffic. Section "An Offer of railway Services in Polish Airports" describes basic parameters of railway infrastructure as well as rail transport services offered for the following airports: Kraków Balice, Warszawa Chopin Airport, and Lublin-Świdnik Airport. An offer of bus operators is presented in Section "Railway Services in Competition from the Bus Transport". Here, basic factors in the transport services offered by railway and bus operators stating number of lines, number of trips per day, travel times and fares, are presented. Final summary contains predictions about the demand for passenger air traffic until 2030, as well as conclusions drawn from the carried out abalyses.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie zmian, które zaistniały na rynku kolejowych przewozów pasażerskich w pierwszym roku pandemii COVID-19 wywołanej SARS-CoV-2. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na pasażerski transport kolejowy w Polsce. Przedstawiono dwa segmenty przewozów pasażerskich: regionalny – reprezentowany przez Spółkę POLREGIO działającą na terenie kraju i dalekobieżny – reprezentowany przez PKP Intercity. Analiza danych wskazuje, że niezależnie od zajmowanego segmentu, 2020 rok charakteryzował się znacznymi spadkami przewozów, które w kwietniu i maju osiągnęły najniższy poziom, a wyniki fi nansowe Spółki PKP Intercity uległy pogorszeniu w stosunku do lat ubiegłych, jednak udział Spółki POLREGIO w rynku pasażerskich przewozów pasażerskich zwiększył się. Na potrzeby artykułu dokonano kwerendy literatury i dostępnych źródeł oraz wykorzystano metody analizy i syntezy. Tekst publikacji wzbogacono rysunkami.

Maintaining the railway infrastructure in a condition ensuring safe railway traffic is the basic responsibility of railway infrastructure managers resulting from the Rail Transport Act. Elements of the railway infrastructure are subject to difficult atmospheric conditions as well as changing dynamic loads resulting from the operation of a given part of the infrastructure. The lack of proper maintenance of tracks adversely affects their operation: lowering the permissible speed, reducing driving calm, decreasing the safety of railway traffic, increasing the degradation of aggregate and railway subgrade, as well as increasing the influence of dynamic impacts on the surrounding buildings. The following article presents an analysis of maintenance tasks performed at 5 different locations. For the purposes of the article, data were collected in 2016−2018 on 100 km of track from daily reports performed by qualified supervisors managing maintenance brigades. The aim of the article is to present the results of the collected data, to analyze the most common maintenance tasks, to determine the root causes that result in the need to perform specific tasks and to propose remedies. The aim of the research was to achieve market competitiveness by minimizing costs because today’s performance of duties related to the maintenance of railway infrastructure is characterized by very high costs associated with high workload, repair technology, the need to use specialized equipment, and temporarily exclude a part of the line from traffic. The research was carried out in a company which is a manager of railway infrastructure.

The purpose of this article is to present the changes that took place on the market of passenger transport by rail in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Particular attention has been paid to the railway passenger transport in Poland. Two segments of this transport sector are presented: regional (represented by the POLREGIO company) and long-distance (represented by the PKP Intercity company). An analysis of the available data shows that irrespective of the segment, the year 2020 was characterized by significant reductions in terms of transport, which reached the lowest volumes in April and May, and the financial results of PKP Intercity were worse than in previous years; however, the share of POLREGIO in the market of passenger transport by rail increased. For the purpose of the article, literature and other available sources have been researched and analytical and synthetic methods have been applied. In addition to text, drawings are included.
