Opis:
An experiment aimed to review differences in the pattern of canopy forming, solar radiation penetration and its use efficiency (RUE) within the canopy of two contrasting pea morphotypes (leafy and semi-leafless) was conducted in the field. The differences in absorption of PAR were significant for both morphotypes in two consecutive years of different climatic conditions. The canopy architecture influenced absorption of PAR, penetration through the canopy and can cresult in different yield forming. For both morphotypes a common linear correlation between intercepted PAR and dry matter accumulation was found until the beginning of pod formation, but then this association was not linear. Differences in CGR and ULRc were significantly bigger in leafy pea morphotypes than in semi-leafless one and the higher values for both were observed at the beginning of pod formation.

Opis:
The studies carried out in 1997-1998 were aimed at evaluating the incidence of Broad bean stain virus (BBSV) in pea seed material, susceptibility of pea cultivars to the virus and transmission of BBSV by seeds of selected pea cultivars. Experiments were performed in field conditions and in a greenhouse. The presence of the virus in pea plants and seeds was determined by isolation onto Chenopodium murale or serologically by ELISA test. In the seed material, the virus was detected only in 0.1% of the seeds. The pea cultivars: Cud Kelvedonu, Delisa II, Hejga, Iłówiecki, Konserwowy IHAR, Maraton, Nefryt, Pegaz, Sześciotygodniowy and Telefon, appeared to be susceptible to the infection by BBSV and percentage of infected plants ranged from 6.6 to 35%. Transmission of the virus by seeds occurred in all cultivars mentioned above except for cv. Maraton and percentage of infected seeds ranged from 2.9 to 50.0, depending on cultivar of pea.

Opis:
Interaction of genotypes with environment for quantitative traits among them certain disease resistance makes difficult choice of proper genotypes for breeding proposes and may affects further cultivation effects. The aim of this study was assessment of stability of reaction to Mycosphaerella pinodes infection for the set of pea genotypes in four years field experiments with vary epidemic pressure. The Sheffé-Caliński mixed model and the Caliński-Kaczmarek joint regression model for genotype-environment interaction analysis was applied. Tested pea genotypes were grouped into two categories; responding stable to M. pinodes (reacting proportionally to changed environment) and unstable ones (showing significant interaction with environment). The unstable genotypes reacted irregularly to environments (not able to describe the reaction to M. pinodes by any linear regression function). Pea genotypes PI 142441, PI 142442, PI 404221, PI 413691, cv. Radley and Bohun were characterized by high negative main effects (most resistant) for disease severity and showed stable response to M. pinodes infection. Stability of mycospharealla blight reactions was not associated with the level of resistance in the cultivars tested.

Opis:
Relation between morphological traits  of the root system and yield  related  traits is an important issue concerning efforts aiming at improving of ideotype of cultivated plants species, including pea. In this paper, to analyse the dependency between traits describing the root system morphology and yield potential, Person’s and Spearman's correlations as well as canonical correlations were used. Root system was analyzed in 14 and 21 day-old seedlings growing in blotting-paper cylinders. Yield po- tential of pea was analysed in a field experiment. Results of Person’s and Spearman's correlations revealed that number of lateral roots and lateral roots density were correlated witch yield related traits. Correlation between root length and shoot length was observed only for 14 day-old seedlings. The result of canonical correlations revealed that number of lateral roots and lateral roots density had the largest effect on yield re- lated traits. This work highlights, that in order to improve the yield of pea it might become necessary to under- stand genetic determination of morphological traits of the root system, especially number of lateral roots.

Opis:
The paper presents some theoretical assumptions of the SYCA (Sequential Yield Component Analysis) and the application of SYCA followed by TDP (Two-dimensional Partitioning) to analysis of the data from a plant breeding experiment with fodder pea. Partially balanced incomplete block design with 25 morphologically different breeding forms in 4 replications was applied. In both methods of data analysis plant height was the first trait in a sequence of independent traits, followed by different traits depending on the method. The results of the analyses proved that in a morphologically highly differentiated population of fodder pea the contribution of plant height to the yield variability is reduced, with plant height to the first pod being one of the traits that have a significant effect on yield. According to the SYCA method, when the pea forms were divided into groups of plants similar in height, the effect of plant height as the first yield component was high and significant. Generally, the higher were the plants in the groups, the smaller was the share of the trait in the yield, although still relatively high and significant. For the purpose of yield component analysis in pea it is recommendable to divide the breeding material to groups of plants of a similar height. As for the other yield components, the highest contribution into the final yield was attributed to the number of nodes with pods by plant height and seed weight by number of seeds calculated according to the SYCA and the number of nodes with pods calculated according to the TDP method, respectively. The authors, who have used the two yield component analyses for several years, have gained enough experience to claim that the two methods can become effective statistical tools for the elaboration of yield components. Moreover, they can be useful not only in plant breeding studies but also in many other types of agricultural experimentation.

Opis:
Genotypic variation in technological parameters, among them cooking time, of seeds of field pea cultivars from Polish National List was assessed. Seed samples, collected for analysis over two following growing seasons at Radzików, were analysed for 1000 seed weight (TSW), percentage share of seed coat, protein and ash contents, seed hydration capacity, electroconductivity of seed exudates and cooking time. Significant difference among tested genotypes, years of harvests as well as significant interaction genotypes-by-year for all the tested seed parameters were found. The highest variation, expressed by coefficient of variation (CV%), among tested cultivars was found for cooking time (24.1 and 22.3 for CG 50% and CG 80% respectively) followed by electroconductivity measurements (15.8) and 1000 seed weight (10.0). The cultivars with the highest and lowest values of evaluated parameters were identified. Significant interaction cultivars-by-year indicated different reaction among the tested cultivars to environmental conditions during growing season. The use hierarchical cluster analysis according to the Ward’s method allowed to distinguish 4 homogenous groups of pea cultivars considering all physicochemical parameters and cooking time. The findings of this study my be applicable by plant breeders in developing new pea cultivars.
