Opis:
Thorium can be used as an alternative fuel for nuclear power generation. It presents many advantages over uranium, which shows its usability in the nuclear fuel cycle. Its concentration in nature is about 3-5 times larger than concentration of uranium. In addition, the long-term radiotoxicity of the spent thorium fuel is significantly lower than the radiotoxicity of the spent uranium fuel. The research on thorium fuel cycle is also performed in Poland. Department of Nuclear Energy, Faculty of Energy and Fuels of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow owns unique in Poland Th-Pb fuel assembly dedicated for research on thorium fuel.

Opis:
Since March 1994, the Institut de Tecniques Energetiques (INTE) of the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), has been measuring environmental gamma dose rate and the airborne radon concentration levels outdoors, at the ESCRA Station, which is located in Barcelona. ESCRA simultaneously measures several meteorological parameters as well. As it is well known, the gamma dose rate suffers noticeable increments during rain intervals, which in our case range from 10% up to 40%, mainly caused by the deposition of the radon daughters 214Bi and 214Pb. These increments do not seem to be correlated with rainrate, rain interval duration, precipitation volume, or other meteorological parameters. In order to develop models that explain the observed dose enhancement, it is interesting to determine the concentration of the gamma emitters in rainwater and, due to the relative short half life of the two nuclides mentioned above, this must be done as it rains. To this end, we have developed an on-line gamma spectroscopy system for rainwater. The operation of this device, which has been automated by means of a LabView program, consists of the following steps: first, 250 cm3 of water is collected and, if the rainrate is high enough, is transferred to the measurement tank, a Marinelly-like container located underneath a HPGe solid state detector. All the system is surrounded by a lead shield. Preliminary measurements carried out with this device yielded radon daughter concentrations ranging from 50 Bq/l up to 1600 Bq/l.

The sorption of Pb2+ on the composite sorbent obtained by incorporating of copper(II)-potassium hexacyanoferrate or nickel(II)-potassium hexacyanoferrate and magnetite into sulphonated phenolic resin was studied. The sorption kinetics were performed in hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acid solutions in the concentrations range from 10-4 molźdm-3 to 1 molźdm-3. The distribution coefficients for the lead(II) sorption on the sorbents in these conditions were determined. The highest Kd values, more than 1000 cm3źg-1, were obtained for composite sorbents CuNCFM from HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4 (range concentration 10-4-10-2) and for CuNCF and NiNCF from HCl (range concentration 10-4-10-2). Also, the lead(II) sorption on the magnetite-loaded resin was performed.

Opis:
Five bottom sediment cores from the Kuwait Bay were dated using 210Pb and 137Cs radionuclides. For evaluating the sedimentation rate two methods were applied: geochronology with the constant rate of supply unsupported 210Pb (CRS model) and the Weibull distribution of anthropogenic 137Cs. The sedimentation rates in this region, calculated by the first method ranged from 0.24 to 0.39 cm/year, while the same rates obtained from 137Cs distribution were slightly lower: from 0.1 to 0.25 cm/year. These relatively small differences can be explained by additional input of the Chernobyl accident to the 137Cs inventory in the bottoms sediments of the Northern Hemisphere.

Opis:
pLrec plasmid DNA was introduced into Chinese hamster cell lines defective in DNA repair (Pa13, Pb4, xrs6) and the parental CHO-K1 cell line. Clones with stable integrated plasmid were isolated and integrity of the incorporated DNA was checked by Southern blotting and PCR. Intact pLrec plasmid was found in 11% of the isolated CHO-K1 clones. In contrast, intact plasmid copies were found in 68.8%, 50%, 35.7% clones of Pa13, Pb4 and xrs6 cell lines, respectively. We conclude that certain DNA repair defects may facilitate intact plasmid integration. The higher frequency of integration of the intact vector into the genome of cell lines defective in DNA repair as compared to the parental cell line points to two possibilities, not mutually exclusive: (1) these cells possess a mechanism that facilitates the process of plasmid incorporation and hence, plasmid DNA is incorporated into the genome before extrachromosomal recombination takes place; (2) the vector is inserted into a less recombination prone site in the genome.

Opis:
Sedimentation rates and dating of bottom sediments were estimated in two sampling stations of the Gulf of Gdańsk and in four stations in the open sea area. Estimations were based on vertical distributions of 210Pb, 137Cs and 239,240Pu activity concentrations in sediment core samples taken in 1998–2007. Two dating models based on changes of activity concentrations of 210Pbunsup were used: 1) CF:CS (Constant Flux Constant Sedimentation rate-model) and 2) CRS (Constant Rate of Supply-model). 137Cs and 239,240Pu were applied as time markers. 137Cs originates mostly from the Chernobyl accident in 1986, whereas 239,240Pu comes from the global fallout in 1963. The validation of the 210Pb methods was performed by activity peak of 137Cs and 239,240Pu. Sediment accumulation rate (g·cm–2·y–1) was constant along sediment core. Annually accumulated layer, (mm·y–1) decreased with sediment depth in all the locations. In the Gulf of Gdańsk sedimentation rate in the upper layer was about 3.6 mm·y–1, and it decreased in the deeper layers to about 1.1 mm·y–1. Sedimentation rates in the open sea area were lower than in the gulf region and the lowest was observed in the Bornholm Deep, being about 0.95 mm·y–1 in the upper layer and 0.35 mm·y–1 in the deeper layer. The growth of a 5 cm thick layer took 27–37 years in the Gulf of Gdańsk, and 61–105 years in the open sea area. It is suggested that the mean values obtained from the models would give a most reliable estimation of the sedimentation rates.

Opis:
Naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) still remains a problem in oil and gas exploration. Radioactive wastes from oil and gas drilling take the form of produced water, drilling mud, sludge, slimes, or evaporation ponds and pits. In many parts of the USA the soil contains radioactivity that is then concentrated in mineral scales on the pipes, storage tanks and other extraction equipment. The radionuclides 226Ra and its one of daughter products 210Pb and 228Ra from 232Th are the primary radionuclides of concern in the waste. We have investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in NORM using neutron activation analysis (NAA) as well as using passive radioactivity counting using Compton suppressed gamma-ray spectrometry. With a low-energy germanium counter and the Compton suppression system low detection limits were achieved to measure 226Ra, 228Ra and 210Pb. Results have shown very elevated amounts for these radionuclides as well as the heavy metals of barium and strontium.

Opis:
Continuous monitoring of natural gamma radiation in air has been carried out, during December 2014 – January 2018, with 1-min cyclic measurement in Prague, Czech Republic using a NaI(Tl) probe. The 214Bi/214Pb ratio as a tracer in rainwater has been investigated to study its variations related to both the ambient dose equivalent rate per hour and the amount of rainfall. A hybrid methodology for time series analysis, composed of the aggregation of two signal decomposition methods (multiple linear regression and empirical mode decomposition) and one forecasting method (support vector regression), has been applied to identify the anomalies in the studied signals in order to better find correlations among them. The results show a strong correlation between the ambient dose equivalent rate and the 214Bi/214Pb ratio values and between both these signals and rainfall amount≥5 mm/h. Furthermore, the considered descendants of radon are mainly responsible for the overall ambient dose equivalent rate.

Opis:
Vertical distributions of 7Be and 210Pb were observed in the troposphere and lower stratosphere over Poland at several altitudes between 0 and 15 km in the period 1987-1998. These two natural radionuclides are formed from gases in the atmosphere by nuclear processes. They are associated with similar size distributions aerosol particles and are removed from the atmosphere with similar efficiencies by scavenging processes of washout and deposition, however, they have various types of sources in the atmosphere. Vertical profiles of 7Be (cosmogenic origin), characterized by small concentrations near the ground level, increase in the tropospheric levels and at 15 km altitude the concentrations are the highest. The highest concentrations of 210Pb (terrestrial origin) are observed near the ground level, the lowest are below the tropopause, and in the stratosphere the concentration increases slightly. The dependence of the vertical distributions of both radionuclides in the situation of various levels of tropopause are discussed in this work.
