Opis:
Air samples were collected at an early-warning sampling and monitoring radioactive contamination station ASS-500. The results of the measurements are presented for radioactive aerosols collected on filters each week between 1992 and 1999. The large variations in activity concentration were observed in annual cycles. The maximum values exceeded the mean annual values by a factor of 2.8 to 7.3. Over the period of eight years the mean values of activity in air was found to decrease from 5.3 mi Bq m-3 in 1992 to 2.2 mi Bq m-3 in 1999. A good correlation between the Cs-137 activity and dust content in the air indicates that in the observed period the main source of Cs-137 activity is the dust with soil and vegetation particles. The effect of radiation from inhalation is negligible (626 pSv).

The aim of this study was to compare the amount of radiocaesium in chosen compartments of environment in two localities of Košice vicinity (Košice and Jasov). Prevailing part of radiocaesium is in the upper layer of soils and specific activity of 137Cs in the first layer for locality Jasov in 2001 achieved 21.49 Bq.kg 1. Transfer factor values estimated for mixed grasses and for individual years varied within the range of 0.22 to 0.56 at locality Košice and of 0.09 to 0.19 at locality Jasov. On the base of results from modified Tessier sequential extraction method we determined that more than 50% of this radionuclide is in the soil in not extractable fraction. From studied species of mushrooms in sample of Rozites caperata the specific activity achieved 1822.0 Bq.kg 1 d.w.

Only reliable analytical results can serve as a basis of meaningful evaluation and protection of the environment against radioactive contaminants. So, laboratories dealing with the environmental radioactivity determinations should regularly demonstrate their ability to produce acceptable results. Since 2002, every two years organization of national interlaboratory comparisons (ILC) on the determination of different radionuclides in food and environmental samples is required by the Polish law. The aim of the paper is presentation how test materials applied in the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT, Warsaw, Poland) for the 2004 ILC on the determination of 137Cs and 90Sr in water, food and soil were prepared.

Activities of caesium in the mushrooms collected at different localities in Poland and Slovakia have been compared. Discrimination factor, defined as [(Bq.kg 1 137Cs in caps)/(Bq.kg 1 40K in caps)]/[(Bq.kg 1 137Cs in stipes)/ (Bq.kg 1 40K in stipes)], was used to explain mechanisms of uptake and transport of radiocaesium in fungi. The collected specimens were divided into caps and stipes. Activities of 137Cs and 40K were measured using a multichannel gamma spectrophotometer with HPGe(Li) detector. The highest accumulation of 137Cs was found in the samples of Xerocomus badius, Suillus luteus and Tricholoma equestre (2.7, 1.9 and 1.2 kBq.kg 1, respectively). T. equestre and S. luteus proved to hyperaccumulate caesium since 137Cs levels in the caps were two orders of magnitude higher than in the soil while only one order higher in the case of X. badius. Transport of 137Cs from stipe to cap in fruitbody is directly related to K concentration with lack of similar dependence in the case of transport from soil to cap. There is no dependence between activity of 137Cs in the analyzed fruitbodies and its activity in the soil, which makes mushrooms controversial bioindicators

The 60Co and 137Cs bioaccumulation by Helianthus annuus L. was measured during 9 day cultivation at 20 š 2°C in hydroponic Hoagland medium. Previous starvation for K+ and for NH4 + 2.2 and 2.7 times, respectively, enhanced 137Cs uptake rate. Previous cultivation in surplus of K+ ions 50 mmol.l 1 has no effect on 137Cs bioaccumulation rate. Both 137Cs and 60Co bioaccumulation significantly increase with dilution of basic Hoagland medium up to 1:7 for caesium and up to 1:3 for cobalt followed by mild decrease at higher dilutions. Root to shoot specific 137Cs radioactivity ratio (Bq.g 1/Bq.g 1, fresh wt.) increased with dilution from 1.46 to 9.6-9.8. The values root to shoot specific radioactivity ratio for 60Co were less dependent on the nutrient concentrations and were within the range 5.7 to 8.5. 137Cs was localized mainly in young leaves (30%) and roots (39%) and 60Co mainly in roots (67%) and leaves (20%). Obtained data showed less sensitivity of 60Co uptake by sunflower on nutrient concentration in hydroponic media.

The influence of leaf feeding with nitrogen in urea solution and application of chlorocholine chloride (CCC) on the uptake of 137Cs by spring wheat from the investigated soil samples and through leaves was studied in pot experiments. Spray application of nitrogenous fertilizer in urea solution with additional use of growth retardant were found to have brought about an increased accumulation in the grain of 137Cs taken up by the plants from the contaminated soil. It was found that 2–4 times more 137Cs accumulated in wheat grain from leaves contaminated in the flowering stage in comparison with that found in the grain of plants contaminated in the propagation stage. The application of leaf feeding with urea and chlorocholine exerted no influence on the accumulation of 137Cs in grain if the plants had been contaminated superficially in their earlier development stages. Contamination with 137Cs sprayed upon the plants after application of chlorocholine chloride appeared to pass to the spring wheat crops more readily.

The paper presents results of the measurements of Pu and gamma emitters of some forest litter/soil profiles collected in 1999 in the northeastern part of Bory Tucholskie forest (northern Poland). Besides the activity concentration of 137Cs, 134Cs, 40K, 228Ac, 238Pu, 239+240Pu, the cumulated deposition of 137Cs, 238Pu and 239+240Pu were calculated. The origin of these radionuclides is discussed on the basis of the observed activity ratios. The observed average level of radioactive contamination confirms expectations for this region, however samples show a relatively large variation of cumulated deposition for both plutonium and radiocesium originated from global and Chernobyl fallout.

The aim of the research is to obtain preliminary information about the spatial distribution of gamma radionuclides in the soils taken from the Ojców National Park with emphasis on the behaviour of artificial radionuclides, with 137Cs as a representative. The natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra (uranium series), and 228Th (thorium series), which are considered as background radiation, were also determined. In total, 18 soil samples were collected during the summer periods in 2015–2017, while the sampling points were selected with respect to differences in rainfall and local topography gradient. The method was based on gamma-ray spectrometry performed on high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma detector (relative efficiency 34%). 137Cs was mostly deposited in the top soil layers, with activity in the range of 27.9÷586.6 Bq•kg–1. We found strong positive correlation of the 137Cs activity with the soil organic matter content, and at the same time, its dependence on the rainfall amount. Consequently, the soil types and local climate can control the spatial distribution of 137Cs on a small spatial scale. The quantity of natural radionuclides was highly similar in all samples with the following mean values: 38.0 Bq•kg–1 for 228Th, 33.1 Bq•kg–1 for 226Ra, and 479.9 Bq•kg–1 for 40K.

Five bottom sediment cores from the Kuwait Bay were dated using 210Pb and 137Cs radionuclides. For evaluating the sedimentation rate two methods were applied: geochronology with the constant rate of supply unsupported 210Pb (CRS model) and the Weibull distribution of anthropogenic 137Cs. The sedimentation rates in this region, calculated by the first method ranged from 0.24 to 0.39 cm/year, while the same rates obtained from 137Cs distribution were slightly lower: from 0.1 to 0.25 cm/year. These relatively small differences can be explained by additional input of the Chernobyl accident to the 137Cs inventory in the bottoms sediments of the Northern Hemisphere.

The paper presents the results of radioactivity determination of artificial 137Cs and natural 40K in soil samples taken from the Tatra Mountains in Poland (Tatra National Park – TPN). Soil samples were collected as the cores of 10 cm in diameter and 10 cm in depth. These cores were divided into 3 slices. It has been found that the content of 137Cs was the highest at the sites of the altitude over 1300 m a.s.l. The values of 137Cs concentration in the soils examined varied – from 55.8 Bqźkg–1 (dry mass) (417.8 Bqźm–2) for the Tomanowa Pass (1685 m a.s.l.) to 5111 Bqźkg–1 (dry mass) (8400 Bqźm–2) for the Krzyzne Pass (2112 m a.s.l.). In most cases, the values were lower than the average radiocaesium concentration established for Poland.

Data on 137Cs radioactivity in the lichen Hypogymnia physodes and the moss Pleurozium schreberi were compared with the 137Cs content in soil for a Chernobyl 137Cs contaminated forest area of Bory Stobrawskie, southern Poland. The study area partly overlaps the so-called Opole Anomaly, where 137Cs radioactivity of forest upper soil layer in some places is 100 times greater than the average for Poland. A clear correlation between 137Cs radioactivity in the upper soil layers and in lichens and mosses was found, the relationship of which can be expressed as follows: Alichen(moss) = a + b·ln(ΔAs.), where (ΔAs.) is the radioactivity of mobile 137Cs cations, leached from soil to an HCl solution of pH = 3.9. Lichen transplantation method was used to demonstrate the transfer of 137Cs from soil via local soil particulate matter to transplanted epiphytic lichens. During 220 days of exposure, 137Cs radioactivity in the transplanted lichens increased by 145 Bq·kg–1 (d.m.). Atmospheric activity of 137Cs during this time was low (on average it was 5.4 μBq·m–3). The lichens were transplanted from regions with low 137Cs soil radioactivity (ca. 30 Bq·kg–1 (d.m.)) to areas where it exceeded 1400 Bq·kg–1 (d.m.).

Experiments were carried out to determine uptake and distribution of 137Cs, and total isotopes of Cs and K in plants of heather (Calluna vulgaris) growing at two levels of CsCl: 0.03 and 0.3 mM. Levels of Cs and K were determined in soil and in parts of plants: roots, stem, leaves and flowers. Also calculated were: (i) transfer factor of Cs and K from soil to parts of plant and (ii) discrimination of K by Cs during the transport of Cs from roots to aboveground parts of plants, expressed as K/Cs discrimination factor. The results confirmed that heather plants are hyper-accumulators of cesium, because the accumulation of Cs in shoot was much greater than in roots. The K level in heather did not change at Cs concentrations as high as 8-fold Cs level in this plant. Heather plants seem to be relatively resistant to cesium toxicity at 0.3 mM of CsCl; the effect of exposure to CsCl at this concentration was exerted only on roots, without affecting leaves and flowers. These results supply new information on the interactions between Cs and K nutrition in plants; they also point to a possible role of heather in redistribution of the radiocesium pollution in the forest ecosystem.

Opis:
Sedimentation rates and dating of bottom sediments were estimated in two sampling stations of the Gulf of Gdańsk and in four stations in the open sea area. Estimations were based on vertical distributions of 210Pb, 137Cs and 239,240Pu activity concentrations in sediment core samples taken in 1998–2007. Two dating models based on changes of activity concentrations of 210Pbunsup were used: 1) CF:CS (Constant Flux Constant Sedimentation rate-model) and 2) CRS (Constant Rate of Supply-model). 137Cs and 239,240Pu were applied as time markers. 137Cs originates mostly from the Chernobyl accident in 1986, whereas 239,240Pu comes from the global fallout in 1963. The validation of the 210Pb methods was performed by activity peak of 137Cs and 239,240Pu. Sediment accumulation rate (g·cm–2·y–1) was constant along sediment core. Annually accumulated layer, (mm·y–1) decreased with sediment depth in all the locations. In the Gulf of Gdańsk sedimentation rate in the upper layer was about 3.6 mm·y–1, and it decreased in the deeper layers to about 1.1 mm·y–1. Sedimentation rates in the open sea area were lower than in the gulf region and the lowest was observed in the Bornholm Deep, being about 0.95 mm·y–1 in the upper layer and 0.35 mm·y–1 in the deeper layer. The growth of a 5 cm thick layer took 27–37 years in the Gulf of Gdańsk, and 61–105 years in the open sea area. It is suggested that the mean values obtained from the models would give a most reliable estimation of the sedimentation rates.
