Opis:
This paper describes a new occurrence and location of the green shield moss Buxbaumia viridis (Moug. ex Lam. & DC.) Brid. ex Moug. & Nestl. in the Białowieża Forest. One sporophyte was found on a decaying spruce log. However, its existence and the present environmental conditions of the site are threatened by the death of spruce trees. The dying of the spruce trees is expected for the near future and will lead to altered shade conditions impacting on the shield moss.

Opis:
During field studies conducted in 2019-2021, the common swift Apus apus was recorded in 78 sites located in the Roztocze and Biłgoraj Plains in south-eastern Poland. In total, 39.3% of the recorded sites were situated in national parks or nature reserves. The number of nesting pairs averaged 1.7 ±0.9 SD (range 1-5) at each study site, and did not differ between protected and managed forests. Swifts occurred in both coniferous and deciduous forests with the majority in old-growth stands (mean 147 years ±28 SD, range 80- 99). Interestingly, the mean stand age favored by the species was significantly higher in the Roztocze National Park (mean 161.9 years ±20.1 SD, range 120-90) than in managed forests (mean 139.4 years ±28.6 SD, range 80-199). All cavities in which swifts nested (n=28) were located in Scots pines Pinus sylvestris L. with a mean diameter at breast height of 57.5 cm ±9.0 SD (range 40-75 cm), and a mean height of 27.7 m ±3.0 SD (range 23-32 m). Cavities were located between 5 m and 27 m above ground (mean 16.5 m ±5.7 SD). In total, 75% of the cavities inhabited by swifts were excavated by great spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos major, while the remaining cavities were created through bloating at the site where branches had broken o.f These results indicate that in order to protect the relict forest populations of the common swift, it is necessary to preserve patches of old-growth stands.

Opis:
The twinflower Linnaea borealis L. is a rare, boreal plant species that grows in coniferous forests and is partly protected in Poland. We studied its distribution and the condition of twinflower patches in the Augustów Forest (NE Poland) describing 22 twinflower patches in total. The following features were assessed: (1) patch area, (2) distance between individual twinflowers, (3) patch density, (4) intensity of flowering, (5) fruiting, (6) main accompanying plant species, (7) plant community structure, (8) species composition and age of the forest stands, (9) canopy cover of the forest stands, (10) existing and potential threats. In the northern part of the forest where suitable pine sites dominated, twinflowers were distributed irregularly and unevenly. Twinflowers in the Augustów Forest occur in relatively big areas with individual patches covering from 100 m2 to 3000 m2, but most commonly 500–1000 m2. The mean distance to the nearest neighbouring twinflower was 1600 m (range from 250 m to 6035 m). This pattern of distribution and separating distance does allow for sexual reproduction within the studied forest stand and blooming was confirmed in 21 out of 22 patches. In four locations, intensive blooming with >50 flowers shoot/m2 was observed. We did not observe a dependency of the flowering intensity on patch size. Despite the intensive and frequent flowering, as well as the presence of fruits, which were found in 15 patches, the twinflower reproduces mainly vegetatively. Twinflowers grew in 34–166 years-old pine-spruce stands with moderate canopy cover, but there was no relationship between the age of forest stands and the size of a flower patch. Plant species, which commonly occurred with twinflowers were: Vaccinium myrtillus, Calamagrostis arundinacea, Goodyera repens, Rubus saxatilis, Fragaria vesca, Pleurosium schreberi. Twinflower communities are threatened by invasive species in the forest understory in two locations only, while in the other locations no active protection is needed and the plants should rather be protected and monitored through multifunctional forest management. We emphasise the importance of the Augustów Forest for the twinflower in Poland, because about 10% of the Polish population grows in this forest complex.

Opis:
This study outlines the main motives of foresters opposing the enlargement of the Białowieża National Park to include areas managed by the State Forest Holding. The motives were identified using discourse analysis tools based on the semi-structured interviews with 36 people representing various groups of actors engaged in the discussion on the management of the Białowieża Forest. The main motives I found are connected to: (1) a vision of how nature should be and the foresters’ mission; (2) fear of losing employment or getting a worse job; (3) the high esteem of the forester profession in local communities and an inferior vocational status of the national park employees; (4) defending the professional prestige of foresters and the State Forest Holding; (5) competition with national parks over natural areas; (6) forest science; (7) the wish to continue hunting in the Białowieża Forest; (8) bottom-up pressure on the State Forest Holding employees. The major conflict potential in the discourse around the Białowieża Forest is connected with the perception of its unique natural values and methods of protection. As a result, two opposing coalitions have formed: one supporting forestry interests and one encouraging conservation. The discourse of the forestry-supporting coalition is strengthened by an epistemic community of forest scientists. Some arguments presented by the foresters pushing for a continuation of forest management in Białowieża also indicate the involvement of path dependency, which, in combination with large differences between the coalitions, does not allow for optimism regarding the resolution of the conflict.

Opis:
Effects of ungulate pressure on the development of young generation of trees is one of the most important issues in ecology and forestry. Ungulate pressure influence on the development of natural regeneration has been also reported from several national parks. Our study on the effects of ungulate browsing on the young generation of trees was conducted on more than 500 sample plots controlled during one growing season. The overall browsing pressure ranged from 7.6% in seedlings to 20.3% in low saplings. The pressure of ungulates on the regeneration of Picea abies, the dominant species in the Tatra National Park, was by and large below 1%. Broadleaved species were browsed more frequently. The relationship between the plot altitudes and browsing intensity was statistically significant for seedlings and low saplings; at the higher altitudes, the browsing pressure was greater. There was also observed a statistically significant relationship between the type of former management and the browsing degree in seedlings; in the areas subjected to “landscape protection”, the intensity of browsing was higher when compared to strictly protected areas. Pressure exerted by ungulates on tree regeneration was very unevenly distributed, i.e. some plots were heavily browsed and many others - not browsed at all. The most affected tree species were Salix caprea and Sorbus aucuparia, although the percentage of browsed individuals rarely exceeded 50%. Other species favored by ungulates was Acer pseudoplatanus; despite the high browsing pressure, this species was present among seedlings and tall saplings, suggesting that it would be able to recruit to the tree layer. Abies alba was browsed less frequently than the deciduous trees; however, among the tall saplings it was the third most browsed species.
