Providing seamless handover is one of the major problems in mobile communication environments. Careful dimensioning of the network and the underlying teletraffic analysis plays a major role in determining the various grade of services (GoSs) that can be provided at various network loads for handover users. It has been shown that the channel holding time of a cell, one of the important parameters in any teletraffic analysis, can be accurately modelled by Erlang distributions. This paper focuses on solving queuing systems with generalised Erlang service distributions and exponential arrival distributions. We present the quasi-birth-death (QBD) process, which characterises the queuing models with generalised Erlang service and exponential interarrival distributions. We then use the properties of Erlang distributions and characteristics of channel allocation process of cellular networks to simplify the queues used to model cellular networks. The use of these simplifications provide a significant reduction in computation time required to solve these QBDs.

The paper covers development and importance of mobile (cellular) telecommunication services, which developed during last about 20 years and are currently the most important and profitable telecommunication sector. The development of mobile telecommunications becomes essential factor of economic growth in many countries, especially in developing countries. Currently due to the scientific and technological progress as well as the implementation a new standard known as LTE system, cellular telecommunication becomes the basic element of the modern broadband telecommunication infrastructure and internet services. Growing importance of the mobile systems is also connected with great popularity of new mobile terminals – smartphones and tablets. These terminals together with the technology known as cloud computing changed also the ICT market. The paper relates to the situation in many countries, but mainly to Poland.

The article introduces a method of performing a radio link quality assessment based on the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) which will be calculated for every system that is available. The method presented has been developed during the netBaltic project completed in Poland and generally applies to the so-called maritime zone A, i.e. the sea area where ships are still within the range of shore-based radio communication systems, particularly 3G/LTE cellular networks. The algorithm was developed based on the results of measurements obtained during two separate campaigns. That measurement data served as a basis for the method’s initial assumptions and was utilized during the method’s verification.

Opis:
There are many scenarios that have been proposed for fifth generation (5G) networks. Some of them, if implemented, will bring fundamental changes at the architectural and node level. One example of such proposed technologies is device-to-device (D2D) communications which will change the nature of conventional cellular network design. D2D permits direct communication between two or more user devices without intervention of the base station (i.e. eNB). D2D can ensure network performance improvement over the traditional cellular network, because it can offload the mobile data traffic from the other devices. However, applying D2D features in a cellular network will bring about more complex interference problems, since D2D communication uses the same band as its underlying cellular communication network. The aim of this research is to investigate interference-related problems caused by D2D communications, affecting the underlying cellular networks, during downlink and uplink transmissions. The paper examines the use of power control methods to mitigate interference. A comparison is offered between fixed power level (FC) with or without power control, and adaptive power controls using two methods (AC1 and AC2), on a base station or on each of the D2D devices, based on the measured signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The simulation results show that both power control methods contribute to improvement of network performance. AC1 and AC2 can improve SINR by about 1 dB and 0.5 dB compared to FC in a downlink transmission, and by 0.5 dB in an uplink transmission.

This paper describes the problem of planning cellular network base stations with optimization to traffic requirements. This research problem was a main incentive to add some development to the theory of association rules. The new form of quantitative and multi-dimensional association rules, unlike other approaches, does not require the discretization of real value attributes as a preprocessing step. They are discovered with data driven algorithm that gives precise and complete results and has polynomial complexity for a given dimensionality.

The efficiency of cellular networks can be improved in various aspects such as energy consumption, network capacity and interference between neighboring cells. This paper proposes a high capacity energy efficient scheme (HCEE) for data transmission in cellular networks in a country area. In this paper, the authors obtain a new equation to characterize the minimal required output power for traffic transmission between a base station (BS) and a mobile user (MU) based on the MU distance from the BS. Also, the cells boundaries (the boundary of overlapping areas of neighboring cells) by two static and dynamic approaches are specified. This work helps for better frequency allocation to MUs and allows increasing network capacity. In this paper, the analytical modeling in order to formulate the HCEE algorithm and evaluate its performance is used. The performance evaluation results show the simplicity of the HCEE algorithm and its effect on energy consumption decline, network capacity enhancement and the interference reduction.

Opis:
Mobile systems, by nature, have finite resources. Radio spectrum is limited, expensive and shared between many users and services. Mobile broadband networks must support multiple applications of voice, video and data on a single IP-based infrastructure. These converged services each have unique traffic holding and quality requirements. A positive user experience must be obtained through efficient partitioning of the available wireless network resources. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed a comprehensive Quality of Service (QoS) parameter to address this problem. The regular control of service quality is critical for operators to ensure user Quality of Experience (QoE), establish new business models and monetize services. It enables operators to employ fair-use resource policies and maintain network performance during peak traffic times. Wireless mobile communication is tending towards an integrated system of Internet and telecommunication technologies, where mobile users move freely anytime and everywhere. They desire to communicate with any device using the best service available. In this paper QoS management issues in mobile communication are described. The authors present an insight into subscriber behavior and related factors that affect the QoE of mobile data services.

Opis:
Reducing the traffic volume of location updating is a critical issue for tracking mobile users in a cellular network. Besides, when user x wants to communicate with user y, the location of user y must be extracted from databases. Therefore, one or more databases must be accessed for updating, recording, deleting, and searching. Thus, the most important criterion of a location tracking algorithm is to provide a small database access time. In this paper, we propose a new location tracking scheme, called Virtual Overlap Region with Forwarding Pointer (VF), and compare the number of database accesses required for updating, deleting, and searching operations for the proposed scheme and other approaches proposed for cellular networks. Our VF scheme like Overlap Region scheme reduces the updating information when a user frequently moves in boundaries of LAs. Unlike Overlap Region, the VF can reduce number of database accesses for searching users' information.

A hybrid method is proposed for specific absorption rate analysis in a human body located in the near field of typical GSM base-station panel antenna. The method combines FDTD technique with analytical description of the near field of isolated antenna. The approximate results are found to be in excellent agreement with the results obtained by using the traditional FDTD. The most important advantage of proposed approach is minimization of computer memory requirements and computation time.

Rapid expansion of 5G affects a number of sectors, including vehicular communications relying on cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS). More specifically, in the context of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), a particular emphasis is placed on modern cellular V2X (C-V2X) technologies aiming to further improve road safety. This work originates from the detailed scope of the ongoing 5G-DRIVE research project promoting cooperation between the EU and China, with the aim of demonstrating IoV services that rely on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. With the C-V2X approach serving as a point of departure, we analyze and describe a specific green light-optimized speed advisory (GLOSA) use case, for which we provide a detailed descriptive framework, a proposed architectural framework for trials, as well as specific KPIs for the joint assessment of trials between the EU and China. We also discuss the context for performance test procedures to be conducted as part of the intended trials. GLOSA provides end-users with short-term information on upcoming traffic light status to optimize traffic flows, help prevent speed limit violations, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce pollution.
