Opis:
Experiments and theoretical analysis of influence of temperature on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in single mode optical fibers and cables are presented. Forces generated by contracting buffer create optical birefringence and increase fiber PMD at low temperatures. Single mode fiber (SMF) in 0.9 mm polymeric tight-buffer can exhibit an extra component of PMD exceeding 0.3 ps/?km in such conditions. On the other hand, tight-buffered spun nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers (NZDSF) and optical units with stranded single mode fibers have showed good stability of PMD over wide range of temperatures. This is due to presence of circular strain in the core, blocking accumulation of mechanically induced birefringence.

Opis:
This paper presents results of laboratory tests investigating influence of temperature on polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in variety of single mode optical fibers and cables. Research was focused primarily on tight-buffered fibers, where most pronounced effects resulting from buffer shrinkage or expansion were expected. The goal was to verify performance of optical fiber cable exposed to extreme temperatures and to compare behavior of different cables. Very strong temperature dependence of PMD was detected in standard single mode fibers with 0.9 mm tight buffer, commonly used in indoor cables, and in complete cable with such fiber. However, both nonzero dispersion-shifted fibers, spun during drawing and optical unit used in optical ground wire (OPGW), where 12 fibers are stranded showed good stability of PMD during thermal cycling. The same optical unit extracted from OPGW exhibited excellent PMD stability also during accelerated life test.

Opis:
Properties of two different photonic crystal fibers (PCF) were characterized, enabling comparisons. Properties investigated included spectral attenuation, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), optical time domain reflectometer characteristics, elastooptic factor describing transmission delay induced by axial strain plus effects of temperature cycling and fiber twist on PMD and loss. In particular, temperature and twist dependence of PMD was different for each fiber tested. For optical measurements, fibers were fusion spliced to pigtails with standard telecom single mode fibers. PCF splicing procedures and solutions adopted to minimize collapse of holes during arc fusion and splice loss are presented. It was found that fusion splicing procedure must be individually tailored to each combination of fibers.

Opis:
Free Space Optical (FSO) communication is a quickly developing technology that is designed to handle high data rates while maintaining a good quality factor (Q-factor). Many novel techniques have been implemented to cope with atmospheric attenuating factors, such as fog and rain. Here, we have introduced circular polarization shift keying (C-PolSK) modulation to produce a stable and uniform light beam. The plane of polarized light keeps rotating along with the propagation vector, which helps reduce phase variations and cross-channel effects. C-PolSK provides higher penetrating power and attenuation resistance over linear polarization shift keying (L-PolSK). Two different C-PolSK models have been proposed and graphical comparisons, relying on such parameters as Q-factor, transmission distance and inputoutput power, have been made. The cases of moderate fog and rain attenuation are taken to verify the model’s efficiency. Polarized light is split into two orthogonal components and then modulated using the Mach-Zehnder modulator. One of the models also employs the principle of orthogonal differential phase shifting. Eye diagrams have been provided to verify the bit error rate (BER). The orthogonal differential phase shifted C-PolSK model proves to be the most suitable implementation prototype.

Opis:
This paper presents a rectangular-shaped printed monopole antenna with circular polarization for Wi-Fi (2.4–2.484 GHz) and WiMAX (3.3-3.7 GHz) bands. The antenna relies on asymmetric arrangement of the patch with respect to the microstrip feed, in order to generate circular polarization. Dual-band (Wi-Fi and WiMAX) operation is enabled by inserting a slit in the corner of the ground plane. Simulation results show a bandwidth increase of 15.9% (2.2–2.58 GHz) for Wi-Fi, and of 24.16% (3.13–3.99 GHz) for WiMAX applications. Furthermore, beamwidths at the axial ratio of 3 dB equal 48˚ and 51˚ for the x-z plane and y-z planes, respectively.

Opis:
The paper presents optical measurements - spectral loss, OTDR and PMD, temperature cycling and mechanical tests - bending, twist and crush, performed on Yb-doped single mode fibers and small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Several issues related specifically to characterization of such specialty fibers, like measurement errors and artifacts as well as coupling of test instruments to samples are presented. Of particular importance is reliable and low-loss fusion splicing of specialty fibers to standard single mode fibers (SMF), as most commercially available fiber test instruments are fitted with SMF interfaces only.

Opis:
The extraction of quantitative information from Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data sets (radargrams) to detect and map underground utility pipelines is a challenging task. This study proposes several algorithms included in the main stages of a data processing chain associated with radargrams. It comprises preprocessing, hyperbola enhancing, hyperbola detection and localization, and parameter extraction. Additional parameters related to the GPR system such as the frequency band and the polarization bring data sets additional information that need to be exploited. Presently, the algorithms have been applied step by step on synthetic and experimental data. The results help to guide future developments in signal processing for quantitative parameter estimation.
