Opis:
This paper proposes a zone-based three-level heterogeneous clustering protocol (ZB-TLHCP) for heterogeneous WSNs. In ZB-TLHCP, the sensor field/region is divided into zones where super, advance, and normal nodes are deployed uniformly and randomly. The performance of the proposed ZB-TLHCP system is compared with that of zonal-stable election protocol (Z-SEP), distributed energy efficient clustering (DEEC), and threshold-based DEEC (TDEEC) protocol by varying the number of super and advance nodes, their energy levels for the fixed sensor field, and the total number of nodes. Matlab simulation results revealed that the proposed ZB-TLHCP solution performed better than Z-SEP, DEEC, and TDEEC protocols, as it increased the instability period, prolonged the network's lifetime, and achieved higher throughput values.

Opis:
Recent developments in wireless sensor networks include their applications in safety, medical monitoring, environment monitoring and many more. Limited battery energy and efficient data delivery are most considered constraints for sensor nodes. Depletion of node battery ceases functioning of the node. The network lifetime can be enhanced with the help of Multi-Layer protocol (ML-MAC). This paper presents a practical approach including 3-dimensional deployment of sensor nodes and analyzes two different types of networks – homogeneous and heterogeneous WSNs. To analyze various QoS parameters, two types of nodes are considered in a heterogeneous network. The performance of both the networks is compared through simulations. The results show that ML-MAC performs better for a 3D heterogeneous WSNs.

Opis:
With popularization of mobile computing and diverse offer of mobile devices providing functionality comparable to personal computers, the necessity of providing network access for such users cannot be disputed. The requirement is further reinforced by emergence of general purpose mobile operating systems which provide their full functionality only with network connectivity available and popular XaaS (Everything as a Service) approach. In this situation and combined with the fact that most Internet-based services are able to function efficiently even in best effort environment, requirement of ubiquity of network access becomes one of the most important elements of today’s computing environment. This paper presents a general overview of the the vast group of mechanisms and technologies utilized in modern attempts to efficiently provide ubiquity on network access in heterogeneous environment of today’s access systems. It starts with division of users interested in ubiquitous network access into broad groups of common interest, complete with their basic requirements and access characteristics, followed by a survey of both already popular and new wireless technologies suitable to provide such access. Then a general discussion of most important challenges which must be addressed while attempting to fulfill the above goal is provided, addressing topics such as handover control and mobility management.

Opis:
Inherent heterogeneity of the networks increases risk factor and new security threats emerge due to the variety of network types and their vulnerabilities. This paper presents an example of applied security framework - the INTERSECTION. By referring to the ISO/IEC security standards and to the FP7 INTERSECTION project results, authors underline that in the processes of managing and planning security, investigating technology and business governance should be at least as important as formalizing the need for decisions on security cooperation between operators. INTERSECTION provides security mechanisms and introduces capability possible only with a management solution that is at a higher level than that of any of the connected systems alone.

The article introduces a method of performing a radio link quality assessment based on the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) which will be calculated for every system that is available. The method presented has been developed during the netBaltic project completed in Poland and generally applies to the so-called maritime zone A, i.e. the sea area where ships are still within the range of shore-based radio communication systems, particularly 3G/LTE cellular networks. The algorithm was developed based on the results of measurements obtained during two separate campaigns. That measurement data served as a basis for the method’s initial assumptions and was utilized during the method’s verification.

Opis:
Despite the fact that many electronic evices are equipped with wireless interfaces and numerous publications on wireless ad hoc and mesh networking exist, these networks are seldom used in everyday life. A possible explanation is the fact that only few of the numerous theoretically promising proposals lead to practical solutions on real systems. Currently, wireless network design is mostly approached from a purely theoretical angle. In this paper, common theoretical assumptions are challenged and disproven, and key problems that are faced when putting theory to practice are determined by experiment. We show how these problems can be mitigated, and motivate why a heterogeneous hierarchical wireless mesh architecture, and a multidisciplinary research approach can help in making wireless ad hoc networking a reality.

Opis:
Heterogeneous wireless networks is a term referring to networks combining different radio access technologies with the aim of establishing the best connection possible. In this case, users with multi-mode terminals can connect via different wireless technologies, such as 802.16, 802.11, UMTS, HSPA and LTE, all at the same time. The problem consists in the selection of the most suitable from all radio access technologies available. The decision process is called network selection, and depends on several parameters, such as quality of service, mobility, cost, energy, battery life, etc. Several methods and approaches have been proposed in this context, with their objective being to offer the best QoS to the users, and/or to maximize re-usability of the networks. This paper represents a survey of the network selection methods used. Multiple attribute-dependent decision-making methods are presented. Furthermore, the game theory concept is illustrated, the use of the fuzzy logic is presented, and the utility functions defining the network selection process are discussed.

Opis:
The first experience of quality by multimedia applications' users takes place during the setup phase of a new connection. If the setup phase is not accepted or "slowly accepted", the confidence of the user decreases. The user becomes more sensitive when he/she pays the connections with assured quality of service (QoS). In this case, the process of call request should be also accomplished with QoS guarantees. This paper presents the signaling sub-system implemented within the EuQoS system. The EuQoS signaling process follows main assumptions of next generation networks (NGN) architecture and performs tasks related with codec agreement between multimedia end users, admission control and resource reservation functions. In this paper, we present analytical, simulation and experimental results showing the impact of signaling system performance on quality of experience (QoE) for the potential users of multi-layer EuQoS system. In particular, the presented approach aims at ensuring user QoE of the connection setup phase by ensuring QoS for transferring signaling messages by the network.
