Opis:
The multicasting technique supports a variety of applications that require data to be instantaneously transmitted to a set of destination nodes. In environments with continuously moving nodes, such as mobile ad-hoc networks, the search for efficient routes from sources to the projected destinations is a common issue. Proposed Windmill protocol provides a scalable multicast solution for mobile ad-hoc networks. Windmill aims to improve routing protocol’s performance by introducing a hierarchal distributed routing algorithm and dividing the area into zones. Additionally, it attempts to demonstrate better scalability, performance and robustness when faced with frequent topology changes, by utilizing restricted directional flooding. A detailed and extensive simulated performance evaluation has been conducted to assess Windmill and compare it with multicast ad-hoc on-demand distance vector (MAODV) and on-demand multicast routing protocols (ODMRP). Simulation results show that the three protocols achieved high packet delivery rates in most scenarios. Results also show that Windmill is capable of achieving scalability by maintaining the minimum packet routing load, even upon increasing the nodes’ speed, the number of sources, the number of group members and the size of the simulated network. The results also indicate that it offers superior performance and is well suited for ad-hoc wireless networks with mobile hosts. The trade-off of using Windmill consists in slightly longer paths – a characteristic that makes it a good choice for applications that require simultaneous data transmission to a large set of nodes.

Opis:
Wireless sensor networks are typically operated on batteries. Therefore, in order to prolong network lifetime, an energy efficient routing algorithm is required. In this paper, an energy-aware routing protocol for the co-operative MIMO scheme in WSNs (EARPC) is presented. It is based on an improved cluster head selection method that considers the remaining energy level of a node and recent energy consumption of all nodes. This means that sensor nodes with lower energy levels are less likely to be chosen as cluster heads. Next, based on the cooperative node selection in each cluster, a virtual MIMO array is created, reducing uneven distribution of clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocol may reduce energy consumption and improve network lifetime compared with the LEACH protocol.

Opis:
The paper presents a robust QoS centric routing protocol for mission-critical communication over mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (CL-mWSN) that exploits dynamic network states from the different layers of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol stack to make the routing decision. The CL-mWSN protocol exploits three key layers: application layer, network layer and MAC layer. It exhibits proactive network and node table management, service differentiation, fair resource scheduling and congestion detection, avoidance at the network layer, as well as dynamic link quality estimation and packet injection rate estimation at the MAC layer to assess its candidature as the best forwarding node for QoS-centric mission-critical communication. Simulation reveals that the proposed routing model exhibits higher throughput, minimum loss and deadline miss ratio that augments QoS provision in mobile WSNs.

Opis:
This paper presents a new global positioning system (GPS)-based routing protocol, called location-based point-to-point adaptive routing (LPAR) for mobile ad hoc networks. This protocol utilises a 3-state route discovery strategy in a point-to-point manner to reduce routing overhead while maximising throughput in medium to large mobile ad hoc networks. In LPAR, data transmission is adaptable to changing network conditions. This is achieved by using a primary and a secondary data forwarding strategy to transfer data from the source to the destination when the condition of the route is changed during data transmission. A simulation study is performed to compare the performance of LPAR with a number of different exisiting routing algorithms. Our results indicate that LPAR produces less overhead than other simulated routing strategies, while maintains high levels of throughput.

Opis:
Research on multi-path routing protocols to provide improved throughput and route resilience as compared with single-path routing has been explored in details in the context of wired networks. However, multi-path routing mechanism has not been explored thoroughly in the domain of ad hoc networks. In this paper, we analyze and compare reactive single-path and multi-path routing with load balance mechanisms in ad hoc networks, in terms of overhead, traffic distribution and connection throughput. The results reveals that in comparison with general single-path routing protocol, multi-path routing mechanism creates more overheads but provides better performance in congestion and capacity, provided that the route length is within a certain upper bound which is derivable. The analytical results are further confirmed by simulation.
