Opis:
Ranked set sampling (RSS) was first suggested by McIntyre (1952) to increase the efficiency of estimate of the population mean. It has been shown that this method is highly beneficial to the estimation based on simple random sampling (SRS). There has been considerable development and many modifications were done on this method. This paper presents a modified ratio estimator using prior value of coefficient of kurtosis of an auxiliary variable x, with the intention to improve the efficiency of ratio estimator in ranked set sampling. The first order approximation to the bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are obtained. A generalized version of the suggested estimator by applying the Power transformation is also presented.

A class of linear regression models has been proposed for the estimation of population mean and total when information regarding auxiliary variate is available in survey sampling using regression method of estimation by introducing a new auxiliary variable z, which may also be a function of the auxiliary variable x. The proposed model leads to reduction in mean squared error as compared to ordinary regression method of estimation. The improvement has been demonstrated over ordinary regression estimator and also on ratio estimator with the help of an empirical example.

Opis:
This paper considers a chain ratio-cum-dual to ratio type estimator for estimating population mean of the study variate using two auxiliary variates under double (two-phase) sampling procedure, when the information on another additional auxiliary variate is available along with the main auxiliary variate. The asymptotically optimum estimators (AOEs) in the class are identified in two different cases with their bias and variances. The optimum values of the first phase and second phase sample sizes have been obtained for the fixed cost of survey. Theoretical and empirical studies have also been done to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed estimator with respect to strategies which utilized the information on two auxiliary variates.

Continuous distribution of variables under study and auxiliary variables are considered. The purpose of the paper is to estimate the mean of the variable under study using a sampling design which is dependent on the observation of a continuous auxiliary variable in the whole population. Auxiliary variable values observed in this population allow to estimate the inclusion density function of the sampling design. The variance of the continuous version of the Horvitz-Thompson estimator under the proposed sampling design is compared with the variance of the mean of a simple random sample. The accuracy of the estimation strategies is analysed by means of simulation experiments.

Opis:
Estimation techniques for a domain parameter play a very significant role in the theory of sample surveys. In the recent years many advanced methodologies have been developed for domain estimation. In particular, direct and synthetic estimators are applied for the estimation of domain mean in the government and private sectors under certain assumptions as to the size of the samples relating to particular domains. The findings demonstrate that the direct estimator fails to perform more efficiently as compared to the synthetic estimator when reliable units are not directly accessible in the studied domains. Moreover, due to the fact that small units belong to the sample of the studied domain, the direct estimator produces an unacceptably large standard error. In contrast, if a sufficient number of units are available in the studied domain, the direct estimator produces effective results. This paper presents the theoretical aspects of the proposed class of direct estimators for domain mean with the use of a single auxiliary character, compared with an existing direct ratio estimator for domain mean (given in section 3.2). In addition, an empirical study has been provided to support the validity of the proposed estimators. The findings prove that the proposed estimators outperform the direct ratio estimator for domain mean using a single auxiliary character in the case of two studied populations and their analysed domains considered from Sarndal et al. (1992).

Estimation of the population mean in a finite and fixed population on the basis of the conditional simple random sampling design dependent on order statistics (quantiles) of an auxiliary variable is considered. Properties of the well-known Horvitz-Thompson and ratio type estimators as well as the sample mean are taken into account under the conditional simple random sampling designs. The considered examples of empirical analysis lead to the conclusion that under some additional conditions the proposed estimation strategies based on the conditional simple random sample are usually more accurate than the mean from the simple random sample drawn without replacement.

The problem of estimation of finite population mean on the current occasion based on the samples selected over two occasions has been considered. In this paper, first a chain ratio-to-regression estimator was proposed to estimate the population mean on the current occasion in two-occasion successive (rotation) sampling using only the matched part and one auxiliary variable, which is available in both the occasions. The bias and mean square error of the proposed estimator is obtained. We proposed another estimator, which is a linear combination of the means of the matched and unmatched portion of the sample on the second occasion. The bias and mean square error of this combined estimator is also obtained. The optimum mean square error of this combined estimator was compared with (i) the optimum mean square error of the estimator proposed by Singh (2005) (ii) mean per unit estimator and (iii) combined estimator suggested by Cochran (1977) when no auxiliary information is used on any occasion. Comparisons are made both analytically as well as empirically by using real life data.

In various scientific fields such as medicine, biology and bioassay, several ratio quantities assumed to be Normal, are of potential interest. The estimator of the ratio of two means is a ratio of two random variables normally or asymptotically normally distributed. The present paper shows the importance of considering the real distribution of the estimator of the ratio of two means, because generally the approximation to Normal is not satisfied. The estimated asymptotic cumulative and density function of the estimator of the ratio is presented, with several considerations on the skewness. Finally, a new method for building confidence intervals for the ratio of two means was proposed. In contrast to other parametric methods, this new method is worthy to be preferred because it considers the skewness in the distribution of the ratio estimator, and the confidence intervals are always bounded.

Opis:
The search for an efficient estimator of the finite population mean has been a critical problem to the sample survey research community. This study is motivated by the fact that the conducted literature review showed that no research has developed such an average ratio estimator of the population mean that would utilize both the population and the sample medians of study variable, as well as the Srivastava (1967) estimator at a time. In this paper we proposed the power ratio cum median-based ratio estimator of the finite population mean, which is a function of two ratio estimators in the form of an average. The estimator assumes the population to be homogeneous and skewed. The properties (i.e. the Bias and the Mean Squared Error - MSE) of the proposed estimator were derived alongside its asymptotically optimum MSE. We demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed estimator jointly with its efficiency conditions by comparing it to selected estimators described in the literature. Empirically, a real-life dataset from the literature and a simulation study from two skewed distributions (Gamma and Weibull) were used to examine the efficiency gain. The empirical analysis and simulation study demonstrated that the efficiency gain is significant. Hence, the practical application of the proposed estimator is recommended, especially in socio-economic surveys.
