informative frequency band
Opis:
Vibration signals sampled with a high frequency constitute a basic source of information about machine behaviour. Few minutes of signal observations easily translate into several millions of data points to be processed with the purpose of the damage detection. Big dimensionality of data sets creates serious difficulties with detection of frequencies specific for a particular local damage. In view of that, traditional spectral analysis tools like spectrograms should be improved to efficiently identify the frequency bands where the impulsivity is most marked (the so-called informative frequency bands or IFB). We propose the functional approach known in modern time series analysis to overcome these difficulties. We will process data sets as collections of random functions to apply techniques of the functional data analysis. As a result, we will be able to represent massive data sets through few real-valued functions and corresponding parameters, which are the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the covariance operator describing the signal. We will also propose a new technique based on the bootstrap resampling to choose the optimal dimension in representing big data sets that we process. Using real data generated by a gearbox and a wheel bearings we will show how these techniques work in practice.

Opis:
India is the world's third largest consumer of primary energy, which includes fossil fuels like coal, oil, etc. The total primary energy consumption in India in 2015 was 107 Mtoe. India's total final energy consumption was estimated at 527 Mtoe of which the industrial sectors consumed about 30% (185 Mtoe) in 2013. The Iron and Steel sector is one of the most energy-intensive industries, consuming about 25% of the total industrial energy consumption. The energy consumption in Indian Iron and Steel sector is on the declining trend. It declined from 10 GCal/tcs in 1990 to 6.9 GCal/tcs in 2010-11. On average, iron & steel plants spend about 20-40% of the total manufacturing cost to meet their energy demands. In fact, energy cost is considered as a major factor in pricing of the steel. Energy Conservation Act, 2001 (ECA), and the formulation of Bureau of Energy Efficiency are important initiatives taken up by government in order to reduce energy consumption by various sectors in the Indian economy. Another important initiative is launching of first of its kind market-based mechanism, Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) mechanism in 2010 particularly targeting the energy consumption by the industrial sector of the economy. Phase-I for PAT ran from 2012-015 including eight most energy-intensive sectors under Indian Industrial sector, with Iron and Steel sector being a prominent sector. The objective of this paper is to empirically estimate the energy intensity of Indian Iron and Steel sector, also accounting for the impact of ECA and PAT Phase-I in dummy variable form. The results indicate that the decline in energy consumption in this sector until 2011 can also be attributed to Energy Conservation Act implemented in the year 2001 along with other factors. This is empirically confirmed by our results that ECA has a significant impact on reduction of energy intensity of the steel firms. PAT does not seem to have a considerable impact on energy intensity alone but in the years where both PAT and ECA are prevalent, i.e. from 2012 to 2015, there seems to be a significant impact of around 0.050 reduction in energy intensity, as accounted by different models in this paper. There is one more observation from the empirical results that profit margin intensity was found to be negatively related to energy intensity implying more profitable firms invest more in energy efficiency.

Opis:
Empirical evidence from a panel of 126 countries, over the time period of 2010 to 2014, indicates that economic growth is dependent on various factors. This paper finds that government expenditure control, reduced inflation and increased trade openness are the factors that boost the economic growth of a country. Significant evidence is seen for government consumption, fiscal policy and trade openness. No significant relationship has been observed between exchange rate and economic growth, whereas unemployment influences output for African countries. The cross regional analysis of Asian, European, African, Caribbean, and American countries gives specific determinants for these regions. Economic growth is also analysed in developing, developed, least developed, Muslim and petroleum exporting and emerging countries. The results of this study validate the dependence of economic growth on various factors. Fiscal balance has shown a consistent positive relationship with economic growth throughout the analyses. Fiscal balance and unemployment rate played their role in the growth of African countries. Inflation rates and increased openness were significant for some regions. Exchange rate did not return significant coefficients for any of the sub-regions. Government consumption, trade openness, policy interest rate and industrial production rate showed significant effect for different regions of the world.

The relationship between two sets of real variables defined for the same individuals can be evaluated by a few different correlation coefficients. For the functional data we have one important tool: canonical correlations. It is not immediately straightforward to extend other similar measures to the context of functional data analysis. In this work we show how to use the distance correlation coefficient for a multivariate functional case. The approaches discussed are illustrated with an application to some socio-economic data.

We compare four methods of forecasting functional time series including fully functional regression, functional autoregression FAR(1) model, Hyndman & Shang principal component scores forecasting using one-dimensional time series method, and moving functional median. Our comparison methods involve simulation studies as well as analysis of empirical dataset concerning the Internet users behaviours for two Internet services in 2013. Our studies reveal that Hyndman & Shao predicting method outperforms other methods in the case of stationary functional time series without outliers, and the moving functional median induced by Frainman & Muniz depth for functional data outperforms other methods in the case of smooth departures from stationarity of the time series as well as in the case of functional time series containing outliers.

The coefficient of the variation function is a useful descriptive statistic, especially when comparing the variability of more than two curve groups, even when they have significantly different mean curves. Since the coefficient of variation function is the ratio of the mean and standard deviation functions, its particular property is that it shows the acceleration more explicitly than the standard deviation function. The aim of the study is twofold: to show that the functional coefficient of variation is more sensitive to abrupt changes than the functional standard deviation and to propose the utilisation of the functional coefficient of variation as an outlier detection tool. Several simulation trials have shown that the coefficient of the variation function allows the effects of outliers to be seen explicitly.

Suicide rates in Europe have in the recent years reached a disturbingly high level, sparking frequent discussions on the topic of mental health and suicide prevention, which significantly affect not only individuals but also their environment. The aim of this paper was to analyse the impact of the socio-economic situation on suicide rates using panel data analysis. The study presents an overview of the related literature and the definitions of essential terms concerning suicide, as well as the socio-economic factors determining suicide rates. The parameters of a fixed effects model were estimated, interpreted and compared with the results of earlier research. The analysis of the selected dataset showed that GDP per capita and the Gini coefficient have a negative and statistically insignificant impact on suicide rates. On the other hand, the conducted research showed that high divorce and unemployment rates, risk of poverty, social exclusion and excessive alcohol consumption proved to be statistically significant, thus increasing suicide rates.

Regional studies cover a spectrum of diversified phenomena and problems including social, economic and environmental ones, which refer to territorial units. Owing to their specific characteristics they are most frequently of both multivariate and complex nature. Conducting regional research is associated with the need to consider such difficulties as large data sets, insufficient precision of phenomena description, disregarding territorial diversification of a given phenomenon, as well as incomplete description of problems. The objective of the paper is to suggest solutions to these problems by means of symbolic approach application which basically consists in presenting phenomena in the form of symbolic data. The first part of the paper discusses specific nature of symbolic data, methods for collecting symbolic data and methods for these data analysis. The second part presents an empirical example referring to the assessment of labour market situation in Polish regions (NTS-2) using symbolic data and cluster analysis.

Opis:
Cluster analysis of binary data is a relatively poorly developed task in comparison with cluster analysis for data measured on stronger scales. For example, at the stage of variable selection one can use many methods arranged for arbitrary measurement scales but the results are usually of poor quality. In practice, the only methods dedicated for variable selection for binary data are the ones proposed by Brusco (2004), Dash et al. (2000) and Talavera (2000). In this paper the efficiency of these methods will be discussed with reference to the marketing type data of Dimitriadou et al. (2002). Moreover, the primary objective is a new proposal of variable selection method based on connecting the filtering of the input set of all variables with grouping of sets of variables similar with respect to similar groupings of objects. The new method is an attempt to link good features of two entirely different approaches to variable selection in cluster analysis, i.e. filtering methods and wrapper methods. The new method of variable selection returns best results when the classical k-means method of objects grouping is slightly modified.

Furthermore, a comparative study with other sampling plans is introduced to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed plan. Finally, a real-life example illustrating the applicability of the proposed sampling plan in a manufacturing company is discussed.
