Opis:
P. Oxy. XLIII 3150 is a Greek letter datable to sixth century, after monastic dispositions of Justinian. It was writing by a nun who left her monastery, but she was forced back according to the Imperial law and monastic rules. The letter was written at the office of imperial scribes, so there is a legal background that explains the course of the events. It is corresponding to the legal dispositions that regulated the monastic life and monastic status.

Opis:
This article proposes a correction to line 242 of papyrus BGU V 1210, the Gnomon of the Idios Logos. Substituting the accusative for the dative οὐικαρίοις, the vicarii of imperial slaves become objects of the infinitive κθᾶσται rather than the group to which the prohibition to buy things apply. Thus, instead of reading lines 241 and 242 separately, as it has traditionally been done, the two lines must be read together as two parts of a set of regulations. They limit the actions of imperial slaves, that is the Kαισαριανοῖ of line 241, who are barred from buying goods auctioned off by the fiscus, purchasing vicarii, and marrying freedwomen. Read together, the two lines can be interpreted as a measure limiting imperial slaves’ opportunities to increase their peculium by either taking advantage of the confiscation of private property by the fiscus or buying vicarii.

Opis:
The role of freedman procurators in Roman administration of the principate period is still unclear. While the division into equestrian and freedman procuratorships is well documented and studied (particularly by H.-G. Pflaum and P.R.C. Weaver), neither the explanation behind it nor adopting the criterion of less important (freedman) or more important (equestrian) procuratorships is entirely convincing. Reducing the work of freedman procurators (having the same titles as equites) to merely assisting equestrian procurators (under ‘unequal collegiality’) can be disputed as well. By re-interpreting the career of the imperial freedman Ulpius Paean and calling upon other careers, the article argues that some imperial freedmen could have held equestrian procuratorships as their superiors.

Opis:
The literary portrayal of the charismatic founders of monastic communities, and of their successors, abounds in descriptions of ascetic practices and devotion. However, the hegumenoi also needed to be individuals of the right standing and competence, as it was only such people who could properly represent the communities in relations with both lay and ecclesiastical authorities, secure the obedience of all the brethren, as well as efficiently manage the community and its assets. The nature and the exact procedure of superior’s appointment became increasingly relevant and began to interest both the church and the secular authorities once the monastic movement reached such a magnitude that it could no longer be left without proper institutional surveillance. In parallel, there was a growing awareness among monks themselves of the need to standardise the existing practices and experience. In this article I focus on the legal conditions delimiting the transfer of headship over monastic communities and their reflection in mundane reality. My aim is to see how documents of legal practice relate to the imperial legislation dealing with the appointment of the people in charge of the monasteries. The analysis of the superior selection process will allow for commenting on both the legal framework within which the monastic communities functioned, and the much broader issue of imperial policy towards the emerging holy houses. It should also enable some conclusions on the legal status of monastic communities and how it may have influenced the realities of appointing their administrative and spiritual heads.
