Opis:
The verb ὑπάρχω, ‘to belong to’, is frequently used in Greek papyri to denote possession in legal documents. The possessor in such constructions can be indicated by a personal pronoun in the dative or genitive. In this article, I show that the diachronic scribal and phraseological variation that is found in legal formulae with this verb points not only to an increase in the use of the genitive pronoun by individual scribes in certain constructions, but also to a general change from a dative to a genitive case in liability clauses in the Byzantine period. These changes may be connected to the process of dative case syncretism in post-Classical Greek.

This article takes a ‘bottom-up’ approach to the spelling of the genitive case of the word ΙΝΔΙΚΤΙΩΝ as ΙΝΔΙΚΤΙΩΝOΣ or ΙΝΔΙΚΤΙOΝOΣ. It is first shown that the editors of documentary papyri supplement this term in abbreviations and lacunae mostly with the omicron spelling. Chronological quantitative analysis shows that this is also the spelling that is used by ancient writers in contemporary documents. The conventional spelling in documentary papyri between the fourth and eighth centuries in Egypt may thus have differed from what is prescribed in literary sources.

The article presents a fragment of the cornice from the Ptolemaic Portico of the Hatshepsut temple at Deir el-Bahari discovered in 2021 in the fill of the Middle Kingdom tomb MMA 28. The fragment carries remnants of two dipinti in red ochre, of which one is illegible and the other preserves vestiges of the three first lines of the Greek inscription I. Deir el-Bahari 196. They show that the inscription was a proskynema (act of adoration) addressed to Amenothes (Greek for Amenhotep son of Hapu). The name of the author cannot be read with certainty (perhaps Pe[---]); the text also mentions a certain Menodoros, who may be the father of the protagonist of the inscription or another man. In an appendix, a fragment of another text in Greek, probably originating from the south wall of the Bark Room of the main sanctuary of Amun is presented.

This paper proposes to reexamine a type of contract from Roman Egypt, called μίσθωσις τῶν ἔργων, ‘lease of work’, which was used to lease vineyard workers for at least one year. These contracts and their classification have been discussed by scholars, particularly Andrea Jördens, who listed eleven documents of this type in 1990. This paper proposes a new classification including some documents that were not previously considered to be μίσθωσις τῶν ἔργων, notably a contract written very early in the Empire and another one from the Hermopolitan nome in the sixth century. This new classification is helpful for understanding the reason why such work contracts were used instead of lease contracts for vineyards. However difficult it is to evaluate the respective importance of each contractual type, it appears that both were used concurrently in various nomes during all of the Roman period, each one serving different purposes. It appears that the μσθωσι τν ργων contract was used exclusively by the urban elite to create vineyards or to renew ancient ones that were not productive enough. Lastly, this contract seems to have been used even at the beginning of the sixth century , contrary to what Todd Hickey and Andrea Jördens argued: therefore, the reorganisation of labour on Byzantine estates is perhaps to be reconsidered.

The epistolary practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in the Ptolemaic Greek private letters: such a formula appeared in combination with the wish for the addressee’s health. In the Roman period, a new health wish arose in the Greek private letters, and the combination of this new formula valetudinis and the information about the sender’s health became rather rare (only about twenty occurrences). Such attestation often appear in letters of a Latin environment, for example letters written in Italy , letters from soldiers, or letters from areas in which the Romans were very active, like Eastern Desert. Given that the practice of giving information about one’s own well-being was common in Latin letters from the Roman period, I argue in this paper that the relative absence of this topos in Greek letters from Roman times is due to Latin influence.

The article offers the publication of a bronze ring discovered during the archaeological work on the site of Marina el-Alamein, located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea c. 100 kilometres west of Alexandria. The ring dated to the second century CE on contextual and formal grounds carries the acclamation 'Great is the name of Sarapis' in Greek inscribed on its bezel. The acclamation stems from the religious atmosphere of the times, which, in the quest for the divine, ascribed a sort of superiority to some gods of the polytheistic system. The ring contributes to the picture of religious beliefs and practices of the ancient inhabitants of an anonymous settlement hidden under the site of Marina el-Alamein.

The biographical work on Philonides of Laodikeia on the Sea in Syria (P. Herc. 1044+1715+1746) is not merely a source of information about the life of the philosopher, it also bears witness to both well-known and lesser-known aspects of Hellenistic history and civilization, not to mention the fact that it is an extremely rare and precious example of Hellenistic biography. This paper presents a new edition of a passage of the text in which references to vocabulary and procedures of Greek manumission can be detected, which suggest a parallel with papyrological and epigraphic documentary sources. This parallelism allows, in turn, to understand better the text of the papyrus and to supplement a technical term referring to relatives’ consent to the manumission of slaves.

This article discusses the rhetorical usage of the verb αικίζεσθαι (‘abuse’, ‘thrash’, ‘brutalize’) and its derivatives in petitions from Roman Egypt. Curiously, this description of violence only appears in petitions from the Roman period. Using theories of conflict resolution and social control, it is argued that the writers of these petitions, the majority of whom lived in villages in the Arsinoite nome, used the concept of aikia in an attempt to overcome the inefficiency of the Roman Egyptian legal system by augmenting the severity of the crimes they suffered. The usage of the verb αικίζεσθαι (often paired with the noun πληγαις) emphasized the brutality and socially transgressive nature of the attack and presented it as something that needed to be addressed by the authorities immediately, as it affected the entire social order. Over time the phrase πληγαις αικίζεσθαι became formulaic in its expression, suggesting that it was not just contained to a handful of petitions. Rather it was a linguistic phenomenon in itself that reveals the effects of the social and legal environment of Roman Egypt on the language of petitions.

Onomastic studies typically state that lineage (the patronymic in particular) was expressed in Ancient Greek through the use of the genitive case. In this study, which is based on an extensive corpus of Roman and Late Antique petitions and contracts, I show that the actual situation was much more complex: up to eight different lineage expressions are attested. In line with recent variationist studies, I take it that variation in language is not random and try to connect the different types of lineage expressions to a number of parameters of variation, that is, diachronic, social, and text-internal factors.

The paper offers a reading of remnants of the Arabic text of SPP VIII 1198. The Greek part of this bilingual document has been known for a long time, but it could not be dated precisely with the indiction date preserved in the text. The dating formula that can be deciphered in the Arabic part allows the reconstruction of the exact dates for this and another tax receipt, PERF 573 = SB XVIII 13771, issued most probably by the same official. Different tax quotas indicated in the document are discussed as well. Moreover, an effort is made in the article to understand the identity of the issuing official and the document’s place of origin. Although it is almost certain that the tax receipt comes from the Egyptian province, it can be hypothesized that it was written originally in the capital city Al-Fustāt. Finally, some general conclusions about the process of the Arabisation of the Egyptian administration are drawn.
