    In this paper I analyze the character of Judas in the famous Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel. In The Last Temptation of Christ, Jesus is weak and full of doubt, and Judas is a volcano of energy. Furthermore, the Greek writer of his Judas makes a superman. Only through Jesus take his help to fulfill the mission for which it was intended. Judas is a realist novels, while Jesus lives in a dream world. Finally, Judas wins, but he is true to himself. Creation of Judas in Kazantzakis is different both from what we know from the Gospel of John, as well as the version of the apocryphal Gospel of Judas. Kazantzakis, however, does not tell the history of Judas as the next version of the fall of the traitor apostle, but announces original (although the opposite of ecclesiastical orthodoxy) version of Judas – a man who struggles with God (and even against God) for his own immortality.

    W niniejszym opracowaniu analizuję postać Judasza w głośnej, skandalizującej, powieści Nikosa Kazantzakisa. W Ostatnim kuszeniu Chrystusa Jezus jest słaby i pełen wątpliwości, a Judasz to wulkan energii. Więcej, grecki pisarz swojego Judasza czyni nadczłowiekiem. Tylko dzięki jego pomocy Jezus podejmuje się wypełnienia misji, do której został przeznaczony. Powieściowy Judasz jest realistą, podczas gdy Jezus żyje w świecie marzeń. Ostatecznie Judasz zwycięża, tylko on jest wierny samemu sobie. Kreacja Judasza u Kazantzakisa różni się zarówno od tego, co wiemy z Ewangelii św. Jana, jak i od wersji apokryficznej Ewangelii Judasza. Kazantzakis nie opowiada jednak historii Judasza jako kolejnej wersji upadku apostoła zdrajcy, ale ogłasza oryginalną (chociaż przeciwną kościelnej ortodoksji) wersję Judasza – człowieka, który walczy z Bogiem (a nawet przeciwko Bogu) o własną nieśmiertelność.

    Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi oryginalny artykuł poświęcony wydanemu w 1965 r. dramatowi Żegnaj, Judaszu Ireneusza Iredyńskiego. Celem artykułu jest studium przypadku apostoła zdrajcy, którego współczesną realizację w wersji scenicznej przedstawił dramaturg-outsider, Ireneusz Iredyński. Artykuł ukazuje, że sam chwyt umieszczenia na scenie bohatera biblijnego, nie musi oznaczać eksploracji sfery sacrum. „Zdrajca” Iredyńskiego jest uniwersalnym bohaterem, który niepokoi w każdej epoce i to niezależnie od wyznawanej religii lub deklarowanego ateizmu. Niniejsze opracowanie w centrum uwagi stawia problem wierności i zdrady, bycia kozłem ofiarnym i poszukiwania zbawienia. Bohaterem dramatu Iredyńskiego jest współczesny Judasz – czterdziestoletni mężczyzna, którego kaprys ojca obdarzył fatalnym imieniem apostoła-zdrajcy. Imię „Judasza” przynosi kompleks, a nawet obsesję Judasza. To właściwie jedyny cel życia bohatera sztuki – Judasz pragnie udowodnić wszystkim wokół, że nigdy nie zdradzi. Pomimo przeciwności losu pragnie pozostać do końca wierny. W wersji Iredyńskiego Judasz, zaangażowany w działalność konspiracyjną, nie chce wydać swojego Szefa, który stoi na czele bliżej nieokreślonej organizacji opozycyjnej. Realia sztuki Iredyńskiego odzwierciedlają rzeczywistość PRL-owskiego terroru lat 60. XX w., ale dają się również odczytać jako bardziej uniwersalny obraz totalitaryzmu. Jednak fatum Judasza jest silniejsze niż jego pragnienie wierności. Judasz zdradza, będąc samotnym wobec przemocy wrogiego systemu (reprezentowanego przez Komisarza, ale także Młodziutką Bladą, która okazała się agentką) oraz sadyzmu „swoich” (Piotr). Klęska Judasza polega na nadmiernym zaufaniu słowom. Zanadto Judasz próbuje „sprawdzać” siebie, jego autoanaliza doprowadza do samobójstwa, nie potrafi wyjść z zaklętego kręgu, w którym rządzą demony dzieciństwa. Iluzja wierności doprowadza do katastrofy, a służba sprawie, która jest iluzją, kończy się klęską. Wyniki badań nad dramatem Żegnaj, Judaszu – zarówno sferą psychologiczną i polityczną dramatu, ale i ukrytą w strukturze głębokiej dzieła kwestią moralną i religijną (głód sacrum) – stanowią dobry punkt wyjścia do dalszych poszukiwań różnych przejawów sacrum w literaturze polskiej czasu PRL-u, do studiów nad całością twórczości Iredyńskiego (poezją, prozą, dramatem, scenariuszami radiowymi i telewizyjnymi), a nade wszystko nad „sprawą Judasza” we współczesnym świecie. Tematyka wierności i zdrady, prawdy i kłamstwa, to jedno z najbardziej fundamentalnych zagadnień ludzkości. Budzi zainteresowanie psychologii, socjologii i politologii (np. kwestia lustracji), dla których literatura dostarcza archetypowych wzorców oraz pozwala odszukać właściwe odpowiedzi. Zwłaszcza młodzież jest grupą, do której zagadnienie zdrady, ale i kwestia wierności młodzieńczym ideałom oraz wiara (często entuzjastyczna) w sens życia, przemawiają w sposób szczególnie dobitny. Dramat Iredyńskiego – właściwie odczytany – z jego ukrytą warstwą moralną i głodem sacrum „zdradzonego zdrajcy”, może zapoczątkować namysł nad sensem ludzkiego życia. W dotychczasowych opracowaniach podkreślano aspekt psychologiczny i polityczny dramatu Iredyńskiego (z odwołaniem do biografii autora), natomiast niniejsza praca odsłania zupełnie pominiętą kwestię autosoteryzmu Judasza, który ostatecznie ponosi klęskę. Judasz Iredyńskiego to historia zdrajcy, który został zdradzony – przegrał, ponieważ zawierzył kłamliwym i pustym ideom. Dramat Iredyńskiego jest nie tyle wiwisekcją osobowości człowieka, który pocałunkiem wydał Mistrza z Nazaretu, ale bardziej stanowi analizę zdrajcy, którym może być każdy człowiek.
    This study is the original article on Ireneusz Iredyński’s drama Żegnaj, Judaszu (Goodbye, Judas) published in 1965. Its aim is a case study of an apostle and traitor, whose modern theatrical shape has been moulded by an outsider playwright, Ireneusz Iredyński. The article indicates that the device alone of placing a biblical figure on stage does not necessarily mean exploring the sphere of the sacred. Iredyński’s “traitor” is a universal character that bothers conscience in every epoch, regardless of professed religion or declared atheism. This study places the issues or faithfulness and treason, of being a scapegoat and seeking redemption, in the centre of attention. The protagonist of Iredyński’s drama is a modern Judas — a forty-year-old man who on his father’s whim bears the fatal name of the apostle and traitor. The name “Judas” brings with it a complex, or even obsession of Judas. It is actually the only goal in the character’s life — Judas wants to prove to everyone around that he shall never commit treason. Despite adversities, he wants to remain faithful until the end. In Iredyński’s version, Judas, who is involved in underground activity, does not want to betray his Boss, heading an unidentified opposition organisation. The realities in Iredyński’s play reflect the times of the 1960s terror in the People’s Republic of Poland, but they can also be viewed as a more universal picture of totalitarianism. The fate of Judas, however, is stronger than his wish to be faithful. Judas betrays, standing alone against the violence of the enemy system (represented by the Commissioner, but also by the Pale Kid, who turns out to be an agent) and the sadism of “his own” men (Peter). Judas’s failure consists in his excess trust in words. (this idea was stated earlier) Judas tries too hard to “test” himself. His self-analysis leads to suicide. He cannot leave the vicious circle ruled by his childhood’s demons. His illusion of faithfulness leads to a disaster, and service to a cause, which is an illusion and ends in defeat. Results of studies on the drama Żegnaj, Judaszu — both the psychological and political sphere of the drama, and moral and religious issues (thirst for the sacred) hidden in the work’s deep structure — make a good starting point for further research on various aspects of the sacred realm in Polish literature from the communist era. In addition, it is beneficial for studies of all Iredyński’s works (poetry, prose, drama, radio and TV scripts), and above all, of the “Judas case” in the modern world. The issues of faithfulness and betrayal, truth and lies, are some of the most fundamental questions for humanity. They awoke interest of psychologists, sociologists and political scientists (e.g. the issue of vetting), whom literature provides with archetypal models and allows to find the right answers. Particularly young people are a group to which the issue of betrayal — but also that of faithfulness towards youthful ideals, and faith (often quite enthusiastic) in the sense of life — appeals with particular force. Iredyński’s drama — when read correctly — with its hidden moral layer and thirst for the sacred of the “traitor betrayed”, may start some reflections on the sense of human life. The studies made so far have stressed the psychological and political aspects of Iredyński’s drama (referring to the author’s biography), whereas this article exposes the completely unexplored issue of autosoterism of Judas, who fails in the end. Iredyński’s Judas is a story of a traitor betrayed — he loses, because he has trusted false and empty ideas. Iredyński’s drama is not so much a vivisection of the man who betrayed the Master from Nazareth with a kiss, as it is an analysis of a traitor, who might be found in each person.
