Opis:
As the world moves towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a need for formulations of neurophysiological biomarkers that ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis of visual perception dysfunction in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Biomarkers of visual perception dysfunction in ASD using EEG complements behavioral methods of diagnosis and allows for a more direct assessment of the dysfunction, identifying rapid, implicit neural processes that are not revealed through behavioral measures alone. This paper aims to review the neural biomarkers of the five domains of visual perception dysfunction (visual discrimination (VD), visual spatial relations (VSR), visual form constancy (VFC), visual memory (VM) and visual closure (VC)) in individuals with ASD. This paper shall help researchers gain new insight into the current trends and progress in EEG methods in ASD and discover gaps in the subject literature. A systematic literature search on PubMed was conducted to report findings of EEG studies that:1) assessed the severity levels in patients with ASD and 2) investigated the neural biomarkers of visual perception dysfunction in ASD. Spectral analysis, functional connectivity analysis and event-related potential (ERP) are useful in modern medicine to identify the biomarkers that distinguish the levels of the severity of visual perception dysfunction in ASD.

Opis:
Acquired brain injuries are often accompanied by a series of neuropsychiatric disorders. A wide range of pharmacological agents are used to treat neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, a more indepth review of the agents used indicates that there are in fact relatively few procedures recommended for use. Anticonvulsants including valproic acid, are of particular interest. This research aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of valproic acid, as based on a naturalistic observation of patients with various forms of acquired brain injury and who had displayed neuropsychiatric symptoms. The study group consisted of individuals (N = 43) who were treated with valproic acid as the first choice of drug. Both the initial dose and its size during further treatment, as well as the treatment method, were determined based on medical indications. The mental state of the patients was assessed twice: at the time of enrolment for the study and after 12 months. The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) was used for the assessment. In addition, the degree of cognitive dysfunction was assessed during the baseline study using the MMSE scale. Eventually, 24 individuals were accepted for statistical analysis. They were re-examined after 12 months and took only valproic acid during that period. 24 out of 43 individuals qualified for the study completed the 12-month observation period. 11 respondents were excluded from the study due to their inappropriate tolerance. The reported side effects were of a temporary nature (except for hair loss) and of a mild or moderate intensity. It was observed that aggressive and impulsive behaviours were significantly reduced in the study group. The positive therapeutic effect concerned all categories in the CMAI scale, except for verbal aggression. The therapeutic effect of the valproic acid was varied depending on the degree of cognitive impairments. Statistical significance for higher MMSE scores was obtained only for the category of non-aggressive verbal disorders. On the other hand, in the case of lower MMSE scores a significant reduction was observed both in the categories of non-aggressive and aggressive physical behaviours, as well as for the overall CMAI scale result. The results obtained seem to indicate a satisfactory efficacy and acceptable tolerance of valproic acid in the treatment of the neuropsychiatric symptoms accompanying acquired brain injuries.

Opis:
Materiał i metody.
Background. The aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes to disability sport among people with disabilities and to compare them with these reported by first-year students of physiotherapy. It was assumed that there may be differences in the approach to this problem. Future physiotherapists turned out to be more cautious in their views on the promotion of sports among people with disabilities. The knowledge of the consequences of injury and the related burdens will affect their opinions concerning this issue. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 40 people with disabilities and 49 physiotherapy students. The data were collected on the frequency of doing sports by people with disabilities, people with whom they most frequently do sports, sport disciplines chosen by this group as well their motivation for practicing sports, the role of sport for this population, the changes noted since they started doing sports and the barriers encountered by athletes with disabilities. Results. Based on the study results, we can conclude that physiotherapy students perceive disability sport differently than the stakeholders. Their attitudes to the motivation for doing sports by the population with disabilities are also different. They are afraid that efforts to achieve the desired athletic performance among persons with disabilities may adversely affect their health instead of improving their physical condition. For the stakeholders, in turn, involvement in sports is a chance to test their abilities, socialize and change their lifestyles. Conclusions. 1. The analysis of the physiotherapy students’ attitudes to disability sports is likely to reveal declarative attitudes. 2. The parallel research conducted in the group of the stakeholders, in this case people with disabilities, provides an opportunity for comparison and, most of all, checking what is most important for this group and establishing the predictors of their participation in sports.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of functional neuromarker- based electroencephalographic training with neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) for a patient with dysexecutive syndrome following neurosurgical operation of two brain aneurysms of the left and right middle cerebral artery (MCA) detected after COVID-19 disease. A right-handed, 56-years-old, not vaccinated, patient, became infected with SARS- CoV-2 and contracted COVID-19 with the manifestation of respiratory symptoms, high fever, dyspnea and low saturation of 79% Sa02. She was hospitalized at the Infectious Disease Unit, where a positive RT PCR test for COVID-19 was confirmed. The acute phase of COVID-19, during which oxygen therapy was administered, lasted two weeks and was complicated by brain fog and transient hypertension (175/100). There were no signs of focal damage to the central nervous system. She was discharged home in a good general and neurological condition. After returning home, the patient was unable to cope with daily functioning, as she said her brain fog continued to persist, manifesting itself as executive dysfunction. Eight weeks after the infection, the patient's neuropsychiatric condition worsened. On CT and MRI examination of the cerebral vessels, she was diagnosed with the presence of two aneurysms located on the left and right middle cerebral arteries (MCA). She was operated on at the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology, where a pterional craniotomy and clipping of both brain aneurysms was performed. The Yasargil titanium clip was placed on the aneurysm neck. During the surgery procedures, performed two months apart, there were no signs of a history of subarachnoid haemorrhage and the post-operative period was uneventful, except for a drooping right-eye eyelid (after the second surgery) with a tendency to improve. Each time, the patient was mobilized and walked independently and was discharged home in a good general condition, with no neurological symptoms, except for executive dysfunction. Approximately five months after the SARS-CoV-2 infection (four weeks after the second surgery), her executive dysfunction worsened. Neuropsychological testing using Mindstreams™ Interaction Computer Tests revealed moderate Dysexecutive Syndrome (DES), while neurophysiological testing using qEEGs, ERPs and sLORETA tomography, a functional neuromarker of frontotemporal area dysfunction. The EEG pattern was characterized by excessive, slow (about 6 Hz) activity in frontotemporal areas, which indicated the progressive loss of cognitive control over time. The patient was offered an electroencephalographic training protocol with neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) based on the detected functional neuromarker, which reduced DES. The improvement achieved during therapy was statistically significant [compared to the normative database (Human Brain Index, HBI)]. In effect, the patient's quality of life improved, as she herself pointed out. Her symptoms of brain fog and DES disappeared and she returned to her previous work as a waitress. The Human Brain Index (HBI) methodology can be successfully used in the neurodiagnosis and implementation of individualized electroencephalographic training with neurofeedback (EEG-NFT) for patients with executive dysfunction after contracting longCOVID.

Opis:
The subject literature identifies many predictors of a feeling of burden, yet it often ignores aspects of the psychological and social functioning of caregivers, i.e., resources for efficiently coping with a difficult situation. This study aimed to verify the predictors of a feeling of burden experienced by the caregivers of individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease, taking into account the cognitive functioning of the patients as well as the psychological resources and social competences of the caregivers themselves. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 20 individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers. It included a neuropsychiatric examination of the patients, with a special focus on executive functions, as well as an assessment of the psychological and social resources of their caregivers using standard psychometric methods. Self esteem was measured using the SES scale and sense of coherence was measured using SOC-29. The statistical analysis included correlation analysis and multiple hierarchical regression. The duration of the disease as well as cognitive impairments, especially executive dysfunction, are significant predictors of a feeling of burden. A high sense of coherence is associated with a positive assessment of one’s own resources in the context of coping with a difficult situation. The feeling of burden experienced by caregivers of individuals suffering from neurodegenerative disorders is a complex phenomenon, composed of many factors. The predictors discusse in this study point to various individual differences in the psychological resources possessed by caregivers.

Opis:
Arnold–Chiari I malformation is a congenital malformation of the hindbrain characterized by displacement of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum, pressure on the fourth ventricle, and decreased fluid flow to the basal cisterns. It is a mild form of the neuro-cranio-vertebral syndrome (Arnold–Chiari syndrome) because in many cases it is asymptomatic or has few clinical signs and symptoms of mild severity. The case study presented in the article concerns a 16.5-year-old patient with Arnold–Chiari I malformation following surgery. Based on the neuropsychological diagnosis, clinical symptoms that might result from the course of structural and functional changes in the hindbrain in Arnold–Chiari I syndrome were described and explained. The following were observed: selective difficulties in planning and concentration (maintaining the direction of action) and a weakening of visual perception (described by the patient as a subjective state of derealization). The results of the neuropsychological diagnosis point to certain practical implications for the further therapeutic treatment of patients with a mild form of Arnold–Chiari I malformation, especially as there is a risk of clinical symptoms changing over time due to the posibility of progressive neurodegenerative changes in the hindbrain.

The goal of the study was twofold: 1) to evaluate the QEEG/ ERPs indexes of functional brain impairment in a TBI patient diagnosed with chronic lost cognitive control and lost self caused by post traumatic, and here increasing over time, delusional misidentification syndrome concluded with Cotard syndrome in the blooming stage, with nihilistic delusions concerning the body and existence, and the delusion of being dead, and 2) to explore the mind of a patient whose identity has been disengaged, and who experiences the loss of his self and relations with his immediate surroundings with all the tragic consequences that entails. I herein present a 52-year-old patient, who – after a serious head injury due to a car accident 20 years ago, which re- sulted in focal injuries in the frontal and temporal areas of the right hemisphere – developed Cotard syndrome. After arousal from a 63-day coma and 98 days of post-traumatic amnesia, he manifested: (1) the loss of autobiographical memory, (2) a lost self, (3) forgotten family ties (including his lover). The study revealed that the patient’s cognitive control system is completely destroyed: no cognitive components have been found. Recall from memory has been completely disturbed (a low amplitude of N170). The two hemispheres work inco- herently with the right hemisphere revealing a serious delay in memory recall.

Opis:
Nearly two years into the pandemic, a large body of data has emerged on how COVID-19-positive patients function with the viral infection. It is now known that the virus targets the central nervous system(CNS). As a result, in addition to the expected common health complaints, patients display cognitive and emotional problems. Cognitive deficits should be expected particularly in patients who have arrived at an intensive care unit as a result of respiratory failure, in patients suffering from comorbid neurodegenerative diseases and respiratory conditions, as well as in the elderly. However, these may also occur in patients with moderate to mild symptoms as well as in those of a younger age. The cognitive impairment has an unknown profile. Given the hypothesised hippocampal vulnerability to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, one might expect particular difficulties with memory, attention, information processing, and executive functions. With varying neuropsychological and emotional problems, convalescents in trying to return to their social, family and professional life require professional psychological assistance. The role of neuropsychologists is here crucial. Indeed, many patients will require a detailed, multifaceted neuropsychological diagnosis that will form the basis for subsequent neuropsychological rehabilitation. An early detection of neuropsychological manifestations could modify the risk of subsequent irreversible impairment and further neurocognitive decline.
