Opis:
The main purpose of this research is to find out how foreign terminology effects on Polish terms in the field of typography and book publication process. The author focuses on etymological aspects of specialist terminology used by printers, type-setters and nowadays desktop publishers. Mentioned terms travelled between European countries along with the technological transfer. To track down all etymological threads and borrowings from foreign languages, author analyzed lexical data from many specialist and professional dictionaries and on-line lexicology bases. Research might be helpful to put in order and understand terms which are often misused according to terminological chaos caused and fixed by careless or literal translations, especially in computer environment. Presented words are only selection from the most popular terms used in publishing process, and should be considered as contribution for further research.

Opis:
The Communists started to take control of the typographical industry already in 1944. Printing presses were taken over by various institutions, administrative units, and political parties. Some companies were included in the group run by the Central Administration of State Typographical Plants, which was reorganised several times, and subsequently placed under supervision of various ministries. During the years 1951-1956, typographical plants were administered by the Central Office for Publications, Typographical Industry and Bookselling. The war losses, estimated at 85% of the pre-war potential, combined with the difficulties constructing the presses and related machinery, lack of trained personnel quality of the printing materials (paper, ink, glue, cardboard), and with introduction of central planned economy into the typographical production processes, all resulted in poor quality of the printed books and other publications.

Opis:
The article presents results of assessment of flexographic inks for their conductive properties. Conductive inks for printed electronics are much more expensive than standard graphic inks, thus it was interesting to find out if the standard graphic inks can be a viable substitute in some cases. Several formulations of solvent-based and water-based flexographic inks were assessed to discover that the surface resistance of layers printed with these inks widely differs. Some inks are not conducting until a certain film thickness is reached. The inks printed on paper in general are more conductive than printed on non-absorbent substrates, and their conductive properties do not change with time. The best results obtained with graphic inks are comparable to the properties of specifically formulated flexographic conductive ink. This indicates that standard graphic inks can be used for some applications where resistivity in the single kOhm per square range is required, and some changes to the formulation may lead to a hybrid ink with good printability and conductivity.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczące oceny właściwości przewodzących standardowych farb fleksograficznych. Z uwagi na wysoką cenę farb przewodzących stosowanych do druku elementów elektronicznych, możliwość wykorzystania w tej roli farb graficznych jest interesującym rozwiązaniem dla przemysłu poligraficznego. Zbadano kilka dostępnych na rynku standardowych farb fleksograficznych (rozpuszczalnikowych oraz wodorozcieńczalnych), przy czym stwierdzono, że ich rezystancja powierzchniowa znacząco się różni. Niektóre farby zaczynają wykazywać właściwości przewodzące dopiero po przekroczeniu pewnej grubości warstwy. Farby nanoszone na papier wykazują z reguły lepszą przewodność niż farby nanoszone na podłoża niechłonne, a ich właściwości elektryczne nie ulegają zmianie z czasem. Niektóre zbadane farby osiągnęły przewodność porównywalną ze specjalistyczną farbą przewodzącą opracowaną dla techniki drukowania fleksograficznego. Wskazuje to na możliwość zastosowania standardowych farb graficznych do druku niektórych elementów elektronicznych, gdzie rezystancja powierzchniowa na poziomie pojedynczych kiloomów na kwadrat jest wystarczająca. Wyniki badań sugerują także, iż możliwe jest opracowanie modyfikacji farb graficznych w kierunku stworzenia farby hybrydowej, posiadającej dobre właściwości elektryczne i graficzne jednocześnie.

W artykule przedstawiono sposób wyboru metody drukowania etykiet, który pozwala na optymalizacje kosztów produkcji z uwzględnieniem ilości makulatury, a zatem i normatywów technologicznych, dla danego nakładu. W typowych zastosowaniach wybór pomiędzy analogowymi i cyfrowymi technikami drukowania dokonywany jest na podstawie wielkości nakładu, przy czym przez porównanie kosztów stałych i zmiennych dla obu technik wyznaczany jest nakład minimalny, powyżej którego optymalnym wyborem jest drukowanie analogowe. Zakładając, że znana jest relacja pomiędzy wymaganym nakładem a ilością makulatury dla każdego z procesów, możliwe jest dokładniejsze prognozowanie kosztu drukowania, a zatem dokładniejsze wyznaczenie nakładu granicznego pomiędzy drukowaniem cyfrowym i analogowym. Przy tym podejściu określenie nakładu minimalnego, dla którego proces analogowy jest tańszy niż cyfrowy, polega na rozwiązaniu nieliniowego równania. Dla szczególnych przypadków tego równania przeprowadzono dyskusję wyników i zaprezentowano porównanie pomiędzy typowym podejściem a zaproponowanym modelem. Wyniki tego porównania częściowo wyjaśniają rosnącą popularność cyfrowego drukowania etykiet, a jednocześnie można je zastosować do doboru określonej maszyny drukującej dla procesu, jeśli dla każdej z analizowanych maszyn znany jest związek pomiędzy nakładem i ilością makulatury.

The printing literature provides different values of pressure between cylinders in the printing unit and between rollers in the ink unit of the offset printing machine. Very often there is no information on whether a given value of pressure is maximum or average. Another frequent problem referred to in the printing literature is that authors do not reveal the source of theorems, equations or other important information. This article includes a set of values collected for pressure, line pressure, press clamping and the contact zone width that have been presented by other authors in their specific articles and books. It also includes definitions of pressure, line pressure, press clamping, indentation of blanket and metric clamping. In addition, the article briefly presents findings of the experimental research related to the contact zone between cylinders and rollers was carried out in the printing unit and in the ink unit until present. This article also gives publication references which provide for different equations concerned with the clamping force of cylinders, their compression or indentation, the contact zone width and the impact the specific stress-strain has on blankets.

The QR Code is modular. Data in QR Code is represented by dark and clear square modules – single square-shaped cells (pixels). The article presents the calculation of minimum QR Code sizes printed with various electrophotographic printing devices to obtain minimum acceptable quality using the code verifier. For the research purposes, two test QR Code images with different sizes were created. The first image contained Web page address http://www.cobrpp.com.pl and was used six times with different sizes. The other image contained the coded vCard: COBRPP Centralny Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Przemysłu Poligraficznego ul. Miedziana 11, 00-958 Warszawa 226208070 cobrpp@cobrpp.com.pl www.cobrpp.com.pl and was used seven times in different sizes. Test images were printed with seven different electrophotographic devices using the same 600 dpi print resolution. Those prints were then verified for code quality and readability using the Label Visions Systems INTEGRA 9510 verifier according to ISO/IEC 15415 standard. During the measurements, height and width of the single cell as well as entire code was checked. The research leads to conclusion that minimum code size to obtain acceptable quality level depends, among other factors, of the module size increase in print versus the digital original, which is different for different printers.To find out the minimum module size to be safely printed on any given device, this increase must be measured, or otherwise different code sizes must be experimentally verified for acceptable quality.

The study of the wear resistance of photopolymer material for screen printing plates manufacturing by laser engraving has been done to obtain the main results to determine its performance in this work. As a result of the research of the wear of the developed photopolymer material, it has been established that it has the necessary properties and can be used as a basis for the printing plate manufacturing for screen printing method. A statistical model of the material wear has been constructed. The adequacy of the model has been confirmed by comparing the results of the calculations with the experimental data. The suggested model allows predicting the wear resistance of the polimer material. The simulation results can be used later in the study of other plate materials.
Przeprowadzone zostało badanie odporności na zużycie płyt sitodrukowych wykonanych z materiału fotopolimerowego, sporządzonych metodą grawerowania laserowego. Celem badania było określenie charakterystyk wydajności płyt. W badaniach zużycia materiału fotopolimerowego ustalono, że ma on niezbędne właściwości i może być wykorzystywany jako podstawa do produkcji płyt do sitodruku. Skonstruowano model statystyczny zużycia materiału. Adekwatność modelu potwierdza się w porównaniu z wynikami obliczeń przeprowadzonych na danych eksperymentalnych. Proponowany model pozwala przewidzieć odporność na zużycie materiału polimerowego i można go wykorzystać w badaniach również innych materiałów do produkcji form.

The 550th anniversary of printing in Poland is approaching. The author recalls a series of articles from 1974–1977, long lost in the memory of printers and bibliologists, published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary in “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” (Graphic Arts Bulletin). The articles in the series, entitled From the history of printing, were written by bibliologists, archivists and researchers of the history of crafts and industry. They created a collection of texts worth familiarizing to contemporary students and academic lecturers. “Biuletyn Poligraficzny” was published in a small circulation and was a typical industry magazine. It has been preserved in a few libraries and knowledge of its existence is scarce today.

The owners and the customers of ink-jet printing houses have been postulating for a long time that price evaluation connected with „clicks” and using papers suitable for ink-jet printing recommended by digital machine providers inhibit ink-jet technique development from economic point of view. From time to time there were some pieces of information about different kind of offset papers succesfully printed wirh ink-jet technique. However, except for commercial brand and type of ink-jet printing, there were no researches or parameters defining these papers. In K. Piłczyńska’s dissertation [1] the research on offset papers (coated and uncoated) according to the possibility of their using in ink-jet printing was presented. It was assumed that offset papers are not suitable for digital printing of colour photographs. The criterium of choice is the widest gamut volume of prints made on them in comparison to gamut volume of prints made on suitable papers. The researches were done for two types of ink-jet machine – with aqueous pigment-based inks (Canon Imageprograf 8400) and UV-curable inks (Agfa Anapurna MV).
Właściciele i klienci drukarń natryskowych od dłuższego już czasu postulowali, że stosowany obecnie system rozliczeń, od tzw. „kliku” oraz stosowanie papierów specjalnie produkowanych do drukowania natryskowego polecanych przez dostawców sprzętu drukującego hamują ze względów ekonomicznych rozwój techniki natryskowej. Od czasu do czasu pojawiały się informacje o zastosowaniu z powodzeniem takiego czy innego papieru offsetowego do konkretnej techniki natryskowej. Poza marka handlową i rodzajem zastosowanej odmiany drukowania natryskowego nie było innych badań czy też parametrów jakie muszą te dobrze zadrukowane papiery spełniać. W pracy autorstwa Katarzyny Piłczyńskiej przedstawiono badania papierów offsetowych powlekanych i niepowlekanych pod kątem możliwości ich stosowania w drukowaniu natryskowym. Przyjęto założenie, że w doborze papierów należy pominąć papiery przeznaczone do natryskowego drukowania wielobarwnych zdjęć fotograficznych. Jako kryterium przyjęto największą objętość przestrzeni barw odtwarzalnych (objętość gamutu), uzyskaną w drukowaniu natryskowym dla papierów offsetowych w stosunku do papierów specjalnie produkowanych (dedykowanych) do danej maszyny. W ramach badań wyznaczono parametry predestynujące papiery offsetowe do drukowania cyfrowego natryskowego.

The author is describing the subject of esthetics in historic book printing in Warsaw printing hauses from 15th up to mid 20th century. He starts a polemics against a well grounded assumption among book historians that Warsaw printers in their origins (up to the end of 18th century) created products of inferior quality, when the material book form is considered. A number of examples are shown to present the craftsmanship of printers in the given period. The paper describes also the conjunction between visual form of book printed in Warsaw and the styles and tendencies in contemporary European typography and graphic arts. International trade liaisons, including close cooperation, employing foreign specialists like designers, printers and publishers, as well as quick reactions for the technology advances and implementing the novelties in Warsaw printing houses are mentioned.

W artykule zaprezentowano wymagania i możliwości zastosowania materiałów bioaktywnych do wytworzenia powłok funkcjonalnych na wyrobach poligraficznych. Przedstawiono znane obecnie rozwiązania i potencjalne możliwości zastosowania znanych materiałów bioaktywnych w przemyśle poligraficznym. Wskazano również na ograniczenia prawne w stosowaniu tych substancji, związane z bezpieczeństwem użytkowania wyrobów.
This paper presents requirements and possibilities for bioactive materials used to create a functional film for printed products. A presentation of currently known solutions and potential developments of bioactive substances in printing industry is carried out, followed by discussion of legal restrictions in their use resulting from safety requirements.

The printing industry is reentering its flourishing years. Many entrepreneurs make use of various grants, among which are funds from the European Union. Companies are investing in new technologies, employee training, production line upgrades and more. Management system enhancements in the areas of health and safety management, environment management, or the quality management can also be observed. Reasons for this may be many, but a desire for increasing organization work efficiency, legal and standard compliance, as well as production optimization are seen to be paramount reasons. The article presents the most commonly implemented management systems along with their short descriptions.
