Opis:
The purpose of this study was to develop a body characteristic index (BCI) based on the distribution of maximal oxygen uptake per body mass (VO2max/mass), body surface area per body mass (BSA/mass), and percentage of body fat (Fat%) to evaluate the relative level of individual physiological responses to heat strain in a group of workers. BCI was based upon the data obtained from 10 males and 10 females exercising for 60 min on a treadmill at 2 relative exercise intensities of 25% and 45% VO2max in mild, warm wet, and hot dry climate condition, separately. BCI was developed into 2 formulas, which were proved to be better predictors for heat strain responses than each individual characteristic, and more sensitive than body type to describe the distributions of individual characteristics and distinguish the differences in physiological responses to heat.

Opis:
Ergonomic design of chairs has been well studied by ergonomists. Chair design based on anthropometric data analysis is recommended. Weavers in carpet-weaving workshops use chairs with backrests and armrests. An anthropometric survey was carried out among weavers in Tabriz, Iran, to design a flexible chair and to improve its comfort on the basis of design dimensions. This study focused on the design dimensions of a chair for weavers and its recommended dimensions. The developed chair needs to be tested for its effects on weavers’ posture and comfort.

Opis:
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), which are in agreement with the EU requirements, should assure their fitting to the user dimensions. Designing PPE elements on the basis of mean values of registered anthropometric dimensions can be the reason that those products don't fit to the large group of users. Therefore, there is presented a methodology of designing masks or half-mask fitting to the given group of users or products, which are dedicated for the individual client. 3D body scanner was used for this purpose 55 rescue persons were examined.

Opis:
Although millions of automatic teller machines (ATMs) are currently used all over the world, users of ATMs still have usability problems including inappropriate user-ATM interaction, display problems and others. Many developed countries already have standards in place for ATMs. However, this is not the case in many other countries. This paper aims to assess certain dimensions of ATM machines and their suitability for users in Middle Eastern countries using anthropometric measurements of the user population taking Saudi Arabia as a case study. Dimensions of all ATMs used in Saudi Arabia were measured and compared with recommended dimensions based on anthropometric measurements of the user population. Results show that there is a mismatch between the dimensions of ATMs used in Saudi Arabia and the recommended dimensions based on the user population. Practical recommendations are given as to improve the usability of ATMs in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.

Opis:
This study looked into the risk factors to musculoskeletal disorders and established anthropometric measurements of Filipino workers in 29 manufacturing industries. Anthropometric measurements of 1,805 workers were taken, and 495 workers were surveyed. Limitation of motion was found in 0.8% of the respondents, affectation in activities of daily living was seen in 1.6% and 3.2% felt discomfort in the head and neck. Upper trunk and low back pain was experienced by 23.8%. Odds ratio results (p = .05) showed that it is 29 times likely for workers to develop low back pain when they stand for 2-8 hrs a day than when they sit all the time. Anthropometry can be used for the design of workstations and work furniture.

Opis:
The study focuses on individual and standard visual display unit (VDU) workplaces with respect to performance and muscular load. Three different work settings were realized: The workplace was either adjusted to individual preferences or to the European standard. The third condition mirrored exactly the individual setting, however participants were told that it was set according to another standard. Dependent variables were visual performance in a search task, the rated muscular load, and individual preferences. Results show that both individual work settings yielded a superior performance as compared to the standard. However, performance and muscular comfort improved when participants knew they had adjusted the workplace. Apparently, VDU users follow a intuitive rationale adjusting their work setting minimizing muscular load and optimizing performance.
