    The University of Dorpat (now Tartu, Estonia) is one of the oldest universities in the Eastern Europe. It was founded by King of Sweden Gustav II Adolf in 1632. After a long break in operating due to the long wars the University resumed its activities in 1802, already under the Russian rule. The University was organized on the German model and in comparison with other universities existing in the Russian Empire, it featured the atmosphere of freedom of thought and research, especially in the first decades after the reopening. At the University of Dorpat studied representatives of many nationalities, including Poles. Historians have often tried to determine the national composition of students. In the holdings of the Historical Archive in Tartu is preserved rich documentation of the university from the years 1802–1918, being now the fond. No 402. 14-piece-inventory developed in German and Russian facilitates access to the fond. The fond contains a lot of data on students: their personal affairs, collective lists (of students, the enrolled, graduates, lists of people liable to military service, hand-written curriculum vitae) and materials relating to student organizations (corporations, special interest groups). Unfortunately, in none of these types of sources one can find information about the nationalities, so in many cases the nationality of individual students could be determinated on the basis of the unreliable criteria such as the following: names, religion, place of birth. Therefore, any attempt to determine the exact national composition of students in Tartu is always subject to a certain margin of error.

    Uniwersytet w Dorpacie (obecnie Tartu w Estonii) był miejscem kształcenia wielu studentów z ziem polskich, także tych, którzy zamierzali się poświęcić karierze duchownej jako pastorzy ewangeliccy. Niektórzy z nich, np. biskup Juliusz Bursche, obejmowali najważniejsze stanowiska w kościołach ewangelickich w Polsce. Na wydziale teologicznym do 1914 r. studiowało 228 studentów z terenów dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Ich akta personalne zachowały się w Estońskim Archiwum Historycznym w Tartu (dawniej Dorpat) w Estonii, głównie w tzw. fondzie [=zespole archiwalnym] uniwersyteckim. Najważniejsze są teczki osobowe studentów, zawierające ich podania o przyjęcie na studia, akt urodzenia, szkolne świadectwa, zaświadczenia o stosunku do służby wojskowej, opinie pastora z parafii, z której pochodził kandydat, świadectwa egzaminacyjne, egzemplarze prac semestralnych, dyplomowych, magisterskich, doktorskich, próbne kazania studentów teologii. Wiemy na jakie zajęcia uczęszczali i jakie otrzymywali oceny. Mamy też materiały na temat organizacji studenckich działających na uniwersytecie w tym tych istniejących na fakultecie teologicznym np. Koła Teologów Polskich, jest statut, sprawozdania z pracy Koła. Są to cenne zbiory, ważne dla dziejów protestantyzmu na ziemiach polskich.
    University of Dorpat (currently Tartu in Estonia) was an educational centre frequented by many students from the territory of Poland, including those who intended to devote themselves to a career in clergy as Evangelical pastors. Some of them, like e.g. Bishop Juliusz Bursche, have later held the most important positions in Evangelical churches in Poland. Faculty of theology, as of 1914, had 228 students from the territory of former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Their personal records were preserved in Estonian Historical Archive in Tartu (formerly Dorpat), mostly in the university fond. The most important materials are personal files of the students, containing their applications for enrolment, birth certificates, school reports, military service clearance certificates, opinions of pastors of the candidate’s parish, exam certificates, copies of term papers, diploma dissertations, master’s and PhD dissertations, sample sermons of theology students. We know what classes they attended and what their grades were. We also have materials pertaining to students’ organizations active at the university, including those at theology faculty, e.g. the Circle of Polish Theologians; there is a statute available, as well as reports from the work of the Circle. These are valuable fonds, important for history of Protestantism in Poland.

    Opis:
    Konwent Polonia — the oldest academic corporation existing to this day, was founded in 1828 in Dorpat. Its history before restitution of Poland’s sovereignty was turbulent — full of confl icts with German students and the Russian authorities — but also not without time for fun and self-education. Unfortunately, materials that directly documented corporation’s activity between 1828 and 1882 were destroyed. This paper presents preserved documentation from the period 1883–1918, a time when Konwent Polonia existed in Tartu — in the absence of Polish State. The article also presents a brief history of the corporation’s archive. These collections are currently held in two institutions, the Archdiocesan Archive of Warsaw and the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius. They document the activity of the Polish academic corporation during the period of Partition of Poland.
    Konwent Polonia - najstarsza, istniejąca do dziś korporacja akademicka, powstał w 1828 r. w Dorpacie. Jego dzieje, aż do odzyskania przez Polskę niepodległości, były burzliwe – pełne konfliktów z niemieckimi studentami oraz rosyjskimi władzami, ale także niepozbawione czasu na zabawę i samokształcenie. Niestety, materiały, które w sposób bezpośredni dokumentowałyby jego działalność w latach 1828-1882, zostały zniszczone. Niniejsze opracowanie prezentuje zachowaną dokumentację z okresu 1883-1918, a więc z czasów, kiedy Konwent Polonia działał w Dorpacie – w sytuacji braku Państwa Polskiego, a także skrócone dzieje archiwum tejże korporacji. Zbiory te przechowywane są obecnie w dwóch instytucjach: Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym Warszawskim oraz Bibliotece Litewskiej Akademii Nauk im. Wróblewskich w Wilnie. Stanowią jedyny tak dobrze zachowany obraz działalności polskiej korporacji akademickiej z okresu zaborów.
