Opis:
Jan Swidzinski (b. 1923) has been the one of the main representatives of the post-conceptual movement since mid-seventies. His artistic doctrine Art as Contextual Art (published in February 1976), considered in confrontation with Joseph Kosuth's tautological model of art, makes it possible to appreciate Swidzinski's contribution to overcome the hegemony of conceptualism and New York. Swidzinski was right to indicate that conceptualism of the Art and Language group and Kosuth, although it did try to bring back the profound meaning of art (art is a meaning, not decoration) by introducing non-artistic considerations (self-consciousness), but in fact replaced the traditional formalism of art with the formalism of the neo-positivistic philosophy which was hard to maintain. Kosuth's thesis that the works of art are analytical and tautological sentences - was a mistake because Wittgenstein's theory of meaning as a method of expression, implied an entropy of meaning in art and revealed a need for some sort of verification of the theory of the meaning itself. The tautological model as a relativistic one, while assuming a self-reflection in the autonomous context of art, did not answer the question: why is the term 'art' used this way and not in a different way? So, in 1975 Swidzinski compared the artifacts not to analytical sentences but to sentences comprising intensional functors (their veracity depends upon the contents replacing the variables). The intensionality of artistic statements, that is to say, the presence of functors in them (I know, I believe, I suppose, I must etc.) studied by the epistemological or deontological logic, indicates that they are restricted by the pragmatic moment of experience. Swidzinski declared that Art as Contextual Art is an opposition to the multiplication of meaning, and thus to relativism, and at the same time he recognized the dissimilarity and changeability of contexts, stating that what is real in one context is not real in another, and therefore he tried to sanction relativism. This is the perspective shown in his book Art, Society and Self-consciousness (1979) in which he attempted to define the structure of intensionality as the antagonistic one. In the global context there coexist various logics that regulate our image of the world: the logic of norms, the logic of freedom, the epistemological logic and the logic of a game. The awareness of the intensional structure of the context requires from us today to work out a model of culture, different from the absolutistic and relativistic one, a model in which the repressive opposition of absolutism and relativism have lost significance. It is a question: what society should be? The book is an introduction to Swidzinski's Freedom and Limitation - The Anatomy of Postmodernism (1987). Today, in my opinion, Swidzinski does not resemble the old contextualist who would foster the intentions of a traveller-researcher. He is more of a neo-pragmatic contextualist-tourist. But his doctrine is very important for our understanding of the present art and culture, though the debate between Kosuth's conceptualism and Swidzinski's contextualism appears only to be a case of the history of conceptism and, last but not least, wit (ingenium comparans).

Opis:
The Symbiosity of Creation (2012 – ca. 2034) by Jarosław Czarnecki (aka Elvin Flamingo) is an interdisciplinary art and research project which consists of six mobile incubators, whose interiors recreate the natural habitat of three species of ants. The project consists of three part-stories: “The Reconstruction of Non-human Culture”, “The Kingdom of the Shared Quotidian”, and “After Humans. The Biocorporation”, plus the recordings of failed attempts to create the colony collected in the form of “Subterranean Struggle”. As a result of the materials used (in vivo organism) Czarnecki’s work may seem to be a typical bio-art piece. In my text I would like to point out one very important, yet so far overlooked, critical aspect of the project and show Czarnecki’s artistic activities in the light of the theory of paraartistic values contained in the book Reality aesthetics by Maria Gołaszewska.

Artykuł jest próbą systematyzowania ścieżki rozwoju sztuki internetu w oparciu o ogólną strukturę rozwoju sztuki nowych mediów. Uwagę koncentrują media społecznościowe, które w dobie rewolucji komunikacyjnej stały się miejscem społecznej aktywności, a w tym również działań artystycznych. Tekst otwiera dyskurs na temat statusu twórczości w przestrzeni mediów społecznościowych, a także tego jaki wpływ będzie ona miała na muzealnictwo i rynek sztuki w ogóle. Egzemplifikacja w artykule jest oparta na przykładach artystów polskich. Przytoczone opisy prac pokazują przede wszystkim różnorodność kreacji artystycznych powstających w mediach społecznościowych. Jednak dopiero większa baza przykładów pozwoliłaby na kategoryzację tej twórczości, a więc zrobienie pracy krytycznej, czyli dokonanie tego, czego nie uczyniły jeszcze instytucje sztuki czy instytuty badawcze.
The article is an attempt to systematize the path of Internet Art development based on the general structure of the development of new media art. The attention is focused on the social media, which in the era of the communication revolution became a place of social activity, including artistic activities. The text opens a discourse on the status of creativity in the space of the social media, as well as the impact it will have on museology and the art market in general. The exemplification in the article is based on examples of works by Polish artists. The descriptions of works presented here show the diversity of artistic creations in the social media. However, only a larger database of examples would allow the categorization of these works, and thus conducting their critical assessment, that is, to do what art institutions or research institutes have not yet done.

The aim of this article is to critically analyse the theory of 'art as contextual art' by Jan Swidzinski. The theory of 'art as contextual art' has not been reconstructed sufficiently in terms of its logical constitution, or its formal assumptions. The area that should be analysed, through the means of logic, becomes analysed per analogiam: that is through searching until we find the simplest and the most obvious comparisons with other contemporary, or past art theories. Swidzinski claims that the logic of the game described by him, is a useful depiction of processes that take place in the reality that surrounds us, whereas the theory of 'art as contextual art' itself contains a set of events referred to as 'the logic of a game'. This text attempts to answer the following question: What do we need to verify the above assertion? (as well as others posted by Swidzinski.) Swidzinski attempts to employ the models outlined in the essay to reveal the conflicts brought on by the misunderstandings of concepts used to describe the worlds we live in. As such, models are inscribed in the long tradition going back to Hegel. They are also present in the writings of Marquard, Habermas, Welsch and Foucault; this is irrespective of the fact that the scopes of their conceptualisation differ within the writings of these writers. The models are the one of many ways in which reality may be encompassed. Their usability is determined by some particular aims. Finally, the models serve for Swidzinski to rationalise the crisis in art. It seems rather obvious that the ability to verify them is periodical – the facts, inasmuch, may both support and refute them. The essay tries to find an answer to a question: what if the categories used by the theory of 'art as contextual art' have the ability to describe reality, but only in relation to the past which is being negated and refuted by them? Doing so, they do not directly determine what the current state is, but what it is not, in relation to what has become to be accepted as such. This is a deductive method and what is more, a negative one (it is defined by negation). In this approach the theory of 'art as contextual art' turns out to be yet another archive, another collection of truths and norms. The worst that we could have done is to treat it as true. It will never be true, it will never be fully refuted, just like in the case of truths, aspiring to the status of righteousness, which will never be verified. Perhaps, what matters here is simply to remember to never accept anything as true by belief or habit. And perhaps persistently refute, verify and redefine those truths.

The gallery movement was in fact an art institution in Poland. The movement created its own art world based on the principles of self-organisation and self-study. People who participated in it were artists, art professionals and art lovers, altogether so called ‘conducive people’. Around each of such institutions its circles emerged – communities that co-operated with each other within the town, the country or internationally. This is how the network of personal ties as well as artistic influences appeared. A formal-artistic feature of the movement was the great number of various action art forms or, more broadly – art based on the present-ness. The history of the movement embraces half a century of contemporary Polish art. It starts just after Stalinist times. In 1956 in Krakow there emerged the Krzysztofory Gallery founded by the Grupa Krakowska [Krakow Group] Association, that directly continued the tradition of the pre-war avant-garde. The development of the movement in the seventies was especially dynamic, forming a conceptual art decade during when the conceptual galleries movement emerged. The expansion of the definition of art by the conceptual art movement allowedfor the making of a gallery to be as significant as making art. That period was ended by the imposition of martial law on December 13th, 1981. In those extremely unfavourable conditions the gallery movement and art communities showed their strength. After the total elimination of art in the public sphere, the world of art revived quickly and relocated into the private sphere – private studios and apartments. The art community in Łódź, where the tradition of selforganisation was especially strong, was able to organise the movement throughout the whole country. It was later called the “Pitch-in Culture”. After 1989 and the fall of communism, first in Poland and then in the whole of Eastern Europe, the new social and political conditions caused changes in the way the art world began to be organised.

Opis:
Contemporary interactive art, which is created through digital computer technologies, has its roots in the artistic trends of a new avant-garde that developed at the end of the 1950s. Conceptual art played a significant and specific role in this process along with kinetic art, action art, installation and electronic media art. It formed not only a deep logic and framework for neo avant-garde tendencies in art, but also a favourable context to develop participatory tendencies and to prepare the conceptual ground for interactive art. In this complex field of artistic genres of that time, many artworks created had features which allow us to consider them in relation to interactive art. Amongst them, we can find works of such artists as Wojciech Bruszewski and Jozef Robakowski. Their numerous installations and objects from the seventies link conceptual and analytical attitudes with interactive characteristics.

This text is an attempt to outline the status of documentation in contemporary art and to describe the process of how the role of documentation has changed within the last decade. Simply speaking, documentation has gained the independent status of a work of art. Documentation as an artistic phenomenon can be considered on two levels: formally as a way to create new works of art, and this is what interests me most here; contextually (socially), when issues arising from documentation are discussed institutionally from the point of view of curators, institutions or political decision makers. The most general category which covers the whole phenomenon of documentation as art is a category of the artistic means of expression created by Peter Burger. For him it replaced the traditional category of style in dealing with the 'non-organic' character of artworks created by the dada and surrealistic avant-garde. Its artistic heirs: conceptual art, action art and time-based installations are a starting point for this particular new role of documentation as art. In art history the existing standards outlining the relationship between the original and a repetition, (like Benjamin's aura, a dialectic combination of media such as Higgins's intermedia card), are not entirely applicable here. As in the works based on documentation, the problem of originality does not exist and the intermediality is currently made of several media. Therefore, although they somehow may serve as general patterns of thinking, they are, however, not sufficient to describe and interpret the specific works of art. Ankersmit's theory of history offers a pattern of a narration rooted in facts. Art based on documentation is in opposition to 'literature' created by curators and the contextual studies, into which art history has fallen. This text is illustrated with examples from the main exhibition of the festival 'Art and Documentation 2010' based on open submission and showing the works from last year.

In modern art, the boundaries between artist and spectator are often blurred as the spectator is engaged in the interpretation process and thus in the creation of an artwork, a process referred to by Marcel Duchamp as the "transubstantiation" of objects into art. However, this communication of artistic intent provides room for error, misinterpretation, and reinterpretation (accidental or intentional) of the artwork's intended meaning. Duchamp refers to this as the "art coefficient," which is mathematically explained as the difference between the artist's intended, unexpressed idea and what they unintentionally expressed. The idea of artistic intent, or lack thereof, was toyed with by Duchamp and the artists who followed in his footsteps, including some protagonists of the post-WWII Croatian art scene (Ivo Gattin, Goran Trbuljak, Braco Dimitrijević, and Tomislav Gotovac) who were involved in emerging art movements such as Art Informel, Conceptual art, and the neo-avantgarde, respectively. This paper puts forward works by Croatian artists who experimented with (un)intentionality and haphazardness by employing new artistic techniques, leaving room for (intentional) error and chance, or challenging the artist's and spectator's role, often by exploiting the latter to do their work for them.

We know, how valuable the role of the functor ‘as’ played in conceptualism. The functor was a basic linguistic tool of conceptual art infrastructure – the minimal part of speech that allowed for the production of concepts, engaging ingenium in its primary function as ingenium comparans. The criticism of conceptualism, mainly comparison or identification of the artwork and analytic proposition revealed the fact that the tautological model of Kosuth is just one of many art concepts and remains a product of paralogical thinking. What is therefore decisive for conceptualism is an attempt to build a universal art theory: an idea, that for centuries has remained the basis for logical thinking, or the concept itself, in which paralogy cannot be eliminated. The tendency to narrow the meaning of a concept and limit art to its idea was marked in the text by Daniel Buren “Beware!” (1969-1970). How did it happen, that the formula of conceptism, used in the beginning of the decade by Henry Flynt in the text entitled “Concept Art” (1961) was replaced by conceptual art? For Flynt concept art was art whose materials were the language and concepts. According to him, a concept is a trace of an idea by Plato and means the intension of a name, but with today’s state of knowledge demanding an objective relationship between a name and its intension this meaning is incorrect. Therefore, if the relationship is subjective, then the concept as a possible opposition towards the objective idea occupies a privileged space in a language and keeps its strength. Also in Sol LeWitt’s “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art” (1967) and “Sentences on Conceptual Art” (1969), in which despite the fact that the expression ‘conceptual art’ appears explicitly, the term ‘concept’ remains an alternative to the idea, that may be simple and does not need to be complex. So according to Sol LeWitt, the concept implies a general direction, and ideas are its components. To radicalise this issue, let’s ask, if conceptualism privileges the conceptual, as its literally understood name would indicate? Or on the other hand is what is called a concept, that being something ingenial and that even though it includes a moment of ideation (abstracting and transcending sensuality, that is crossing the borders of the material paradigm of art towards the idea), it is not reduced to a conceptual element, but rather expresses sensuality or its basic modus? The text is an attempt to show the tension in the art of Polish conceptists who referred in their paralogical discourse to conceptualism, especially with reference to the example of Andrzej Partum’s work.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie problematyki związanej z relacją między naturą a sztuką, w kontekście estetycznego doświadczenia codzienności. Za przedmiot analizy obrany zostaje, w szczególności, przypadek uwikłania kategorii artystycznych w potoczne doświadczenie natury – patrzenie na świat oraz rozumienie przez pryzmat sztuki. W pierwszej części tekstu zrekonstruowana zostaje historia filozoficznego toposu „świata jako dzieła sztuki:” od starożytności do nowożytnych propozycji estetycznych. Druga część poświęcona zostaje przywołaniu założeń dwóch najdynamiczniej rozwijających się subdyscyplin współczesnej estetyki filozoficznej: estetyki codzienności oraz estetyki środowiskowej. Analiza skierowana zostanie w kierunku tego, jakie konsekwencje niosą za sobą owe założenia w kwestii zapośredniczenia doświadczenia w schematach związanych ze sztuką (stanowiska sztukocentryczne oraz anty-sztukocentryczne). W ostatniej części artykułu zestawione zostają orientacje estetyczne wynikające z dwóch różnych podejść do tego rodzaju doświadczenia: afirmatywne stanowisko Thomas’a Leddy'ego oraz krytyczne Arnolda Berleanta.
The main aim of this paper is to present issues related to the relationship between nature and art, in the context of the aesthetic experience of everyday life. The subject of the analysis is, in particular, the case of entanglement of artistic categories into the common experience of nature - looking at the world and understanding through the prism of art. In the first part, the history of the philosophical topos of „the world as a work of art” is reconstructed: from antiquity to the modern aesthetic proposals. The second part recalls the assumptions of the two most dynamically developing subdisciplines of the contemporary philosophical aesthetics: everyday aesthetics and environmental aesthetics. Here, the analysis is directed towards the consequences of these assumptions regarding the mediation of experience in art related schemes (art-centered and non art-centered positions). In the last part of the paper are summarized the aesthetic orientations resulting from two different approaches to this type of experience: the affirmative position of Thomas Leddy and the critical one of Arnold Berleant.

The attempts to describe a history of Polish conceptualism in a systematic way, have been until now undertaken in a very similar way. The studies have concentrated mainly on outlining a few artistic centres with connections to the trend. These studies were discussed both in publications from the eighties and nineties and in more recent ones. Only Bożena Kowalska in her book Artystyczno-spoleczna problematyka zrzeszen plastykow w Polsce w latach 1946-1976 (Artistic and social problems of artistic groups in Poland in 1946-1976) (1981) presented a broader panorama of artistic trends that emerged in the seventies. The history of Polish conceptualism mostly covers a narrow circle of galleries: the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, Pod Mona Lisa and Permafo in Wrocław, and Akumulatory2 in Poznań; a separate place is taken by film and photographic activities. The Remont Gallery in Warsaw, which was active around the same time, was not historically analysed. Its activity has always been treated as marginal. Undoubtedly this was caused by the specific atmosphere of those times, personal relationships and (often wrong) opinions which influenced the works of critics later on. What I refer to is the stance taken by the Foksal Gallery towards more and more frequent activities of the neo avant-garde, which meant that the gallery was often accused of non-uniformity, ambiguity of motives, but also aggression and mockery of the avant-garde. The creator and founder of the Remont Gallery was Henryk Gajewski. The official date when the Gallery was opened was 1.04.1972, and the date it closed was 06.11.1979. For almost seven years it hosted prominent Polish and foreign artists; it published numerous but modest publications, organised international conferences, exhibitions and activities that crossed the official boundaries of art. The gallery, from the very beginning, had little in common with the traditional concept of an art gallery. Its programme was filled with meetings with known publicists, political, social and cultural discussions and exhibitions with modern photography. Thanks to its open formula, the projects were realised by artists coming from various milieux. In the programme it was underlined, that it was not a gallery of one group or trend. What is worth noting is the fact that it showed the works of artists recognised as the leading representatives of neo avant-garde and now often linked with different art centers. The activities of the Remont Gallery can be compared to the activities of such places as Pod Mona Lisą and Permafo, where the gallery space was used for 'new media' or actions from the border of audiovisual art. The Remont Gallery in the beginning, similarly to Permafo, showed experimental photography and photo-conceptualism (Lucjan Demindowski, Krzysztof Wojciechowski, Elzbieta Tejchman, Andrzej Jorczak, Andrzej Lachowicz, Antoni Mikolajczyk, Zygmunt Rytka and Henryk Gajewski). No other gallery in Warsaw was more dynamic and with such a diversified programme, which allows us to analyse its activity from the perspective of a variety of discourses situated on the border of conceptual, contextual art, performance, mail-art, photography, installation, body art, audio-art or happenings.

Opis:
The most tangible feature of Polish conceptual art at the beginning of the seventies was the rejection of the old language of art (painting, sculpture) in order to reach out for a new medium of the visualisation of ideas. Andrzej Lachowicz saw in this process a transition from manual art to mental art. It was a departure from autographic art, in which artists produced their own individual sign, to allographic art, in which they perform operations on signs. Mechanical registration media (photography, film) made this transition easier and lead to ‘depicturalisation’, or in other words, overthrowing painting as the main medium of visual art and, at the same time, introduced a new art language — the language of semiology. Photography made it possible to talk about art through the language of signs, not through the former language of emotions, experiences and aesthetic values. That new language, that was used more or less aptly by artists of the 70s as: Zbigniew Dlubak, Jan Swidzinski, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Andrzej Lachowicz, Jozef Robakowski and Ryszard Wasko, turned out to be a significant feature highlighting Polish conceptual art. Photography and sign mutually supported each other in the battle with the old ideas of art. A negative point of reference for the new art language became phenomenology. Phenomenologists take signs as reality, wrote Jan Swidzinski. This mistake was avoided by structuralism, which operates through a neutral and arbitral (systematic) concept of a sign. A sign has an operational character, it is used to explore reality, it also allows for the reformulation of questions posed for art. Instead of wondering about the ways in which art reflects reality, we may ask a different question: how reality is understood by art, what actions are needed to be executed for the process of understanding to take place and, finally, what limits the process? Conceptual art did not devise such a new art formula and one may doubt whether it was its aim. It changed, however, the language which we use to talk about art. It drew artists' attention to the processes of sign-posting, to how art functions in the world of signs. The artists may freely use all available signs, they may transform old signs into new ones (secondary signs), they may give them new meanings through manipulation of the context and discover more or less overt mechanisms of encoding signs that are the discourses hidden behind them. Those discoveries became a permanent contribution of conceptual art to contemporary art practice: thanks to them contemporary art appears to be different than art from before a conceptual turn. Its most important consequence, however, is replacing artworks with art documentation.

THE PLANT AS A MEDIUM: THE ISSUE OF THE CARE OF CONTEMPORARY ART INCORPORATING ELEMENTS OF PLANTS The research discussed here addresses the issues of the subjectivity and individuality of plants: their importance and complexity, which when they are used in art is closely associated with the evolution of an artist’s mentality and the development of bio art, eco art, or land art. This work provides research tools enabling the identification of phenomena occurring in biological/ecological arts, and indicates a change in the status of nature in art. Artworks made of plants and animal materials are becoming increasingly popular in Polish and foreign exhibitions. It is impossible to ignore threats resulting from the significant delays in the state of research of Polish and foreign research institutions in relation to the dynamic development of this atypical art. The complexity of preservation of contemporary art includes the documentation not only of tissue matter, which in this case is ephemeral, but above all the ideas, context, functions, history, the process of creation, exhibition and storage of such works. In works with elements of plant origin, common issues are related to their documentation, the correctness of their interpretation, meaning of the materials used, problems with exhibiting the works, the artist's intentions and the formulation of new criteria for the protection of these artworks. In the preservation of these atypical works of art, this includes taking into account storage conditions, such as air pollution and the microclimate, as well as interactions with inorganic and synthetic materials used in the creation of the object. The main objective in this case is to expand knowledge about the preservation of works of art with atypical organic materials, as well as to provide a practical perspective for theoretical discussions. It is important for the artist to be present, as he indicates the correct diagnosis of the artwork, which is the basis for its proper care and documentation. The specificity of contemporary artworks, the variety of materials used and their history associated with places of storage and state of preservation, require a multilateral approach.
