Opis:
The article shows the attitude the Cossacks presented on two Kiev synods in 1628 and 1629. Their strong position during the Synod of Kiev in 1628 led Meleciusz Smotrycki to give up his efforts not only to reconcile the Orthodox and Orthodox priests, but above all to persuade the latter to accept union. The Cossacks, opposing the presence of the followers of the Orthodox Church at the synod of Lwów, undoubtedly expressed their uncompromising stance on the issue of the Uniate-Orthodox reconciliation. The attitude of the Cossacks at the synods of Kiev in 1628–1629 also provides us with another argument for her independent actions in the religious field, which should be treated as a clear testimony of the importance of matters of faith in her activities. Just like during the Kiev events from the beginning of 1625, the Cossacks’ activity was at odds with the attitude of the then authorities of the Orthodox Church, which undoubtedly were both Job Borecki and Piotr Mohyła. The undeniable fact of the Zaporozhians’ influence on the change of their initially positive attitude towards the idea of re-entering the union with the Uniate Church, makes them increasingly self-supporting in defending the rights, privileges and, above all, the sovereignty of the Orthodox Church regardless of the weaknesses of its spiritual leaders.

Liturgical Language of the Orthodox Church
Opis:
In the domain of a religious language, choices and valorizations are always made from the point of view of symbols and carriers of a particular culture and a all times are a declaration of ideological appurtenance. The article presents the process of formation of the Church language first as a personal norm of saint Cyril, then its transformation into a social norm and afterwards the recognition of Church Slavonic as a determinant of indigenousness. The most important thing in using a religious language is not complete and literal understanding of the message, but the certitude of participation in the traditional culture. That is why the attempts to modernize the cult in the name of comprehension of the message is in most cases ineffective.

Opis:
The article presents the figure of St. Vladimir the Great, grand prince of Kievan Rus’, and his role in the process of christianization of Kievan Rus’. Author recalls the circumstances in which the ruler was baptized, such as Vladimir’s participation in the liberation of Crimea and Korsun from the influence of rebels grouped under the leadership of Bardas Phocas or marriage to Anna Porphyrogenita. A significant part of the article is dedicated to the description of the Orthodox Church’s structure in the lands of Kievan Rus’ with important centers in Kiev, Navahrudak, Belgorod, Yuryev, Chernihov, Pereyaslav, Polotsk, Volodymyr-Volynskyi, Rostov and Turow. The close relationship between the newly established Church and the state has been emphasized. Christianity united the society in Kievan Rus’ and gave it an opportunity of cultural and intellectual development.

Opis:
The history of the Orthodox Church on the territory of the Zabłudów estates and of Zabłudów itself has not been published much. In the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, Zabłudów first belonged to the magnate family of Chodkiewicz and from 1599 to the Radziwiłł family. The Orthodox parish in Zabłudów has never changed its religion. In this study, I would like to discuss the history of Orthodoxy in the Zabłudów estates in order to better understand the life and death of St. martyr Gabriel.

Translation of the Liturgical Texts
Opis:
Macedonians are completely satisfied with the present form of their liturgical texts as far as their language is concerned, though at the same time they feel a constant need to prove their national and spiritual identity. For a long time Church Slavonic in its Russian version was used as the liturgical language, but in 1920s the contemporary language started taking gradually its place, the process growing stronger after the state acquired independence in 1991. First translations of biblical and liturgical texts into the contemporary language appeared after 1945, for example the four Gospels were translated from Church Slavonic by the archbishop of Ochrid and Macedonia, Gabriel II and printed in 1952. The first complete translation of the Bible into the contemporary Macedonian was edited in 1990, though it is strongly felt, especially in the circle of academic lecturers and translators of the liturgical texts, that the Bible should be translated from its original languages, which the lack of specialists in the domain makes difficult. The need to work out the Macedonian language, especially its liturgical version – free of Turkish and somewhat Greek influence - and the Macedonian liturgical music and singing rises many discussions, also among the Church hierarchy, professors of theology and musicologists both in the country as well as in the diaspora all over the world.

Opis:
According to the data of father Maxim Polyakin at the end of September 2012 there was around 1550 original akathists – long hymnographical forms of the Orthodox Church tradition – approved or not by the Church authorities, printed, published in the internet as well as handwritten. The Akathist par excellence (the Akathist to the Theotokos) was written in the VI century in Byzantium by an unknown author in Greek. The others were written in Greek, Church Slavonic (2/3 of all the akathists), Russian (a functional version of Church Slavonic), Serbian, Bulgarian, Polish, English, Romanian, Georgian and others. The article deals with the akathists in Greek, Church Slavonic, Russian and Polish, analyzing their structure and poetics, comparing different local types of the genre. The Greek ones are very regular, their particularity being alphabetical acrostic and the absence of the prayer at the end of akathist. The Greek akathists were translated into other languages, but in most cases they underwent creative transformations, especially in Church Slavonic, lost their classical structure, acquired local features.
