The aim of the paper is to show how to solve contemporary nationalistic issues, known also as „ethnophiletism”, in Orthodox way. Although nationalism is not the ecclesiological problem, its ideas affect the Church, too. The aim of this study is to identify problems, which arising from these nationalistic ideas touch the Church, and to present some ways of solving them. This paper indicates the difference between Orthodox and secular understanding of the term „nation”. The Church attitude to nationality and related issues is not based on a secularism, but it takes as a foundation Christ’s teachings . The paper indicates the problematical questions, in which the clash between the Church teaching and the nationalistic ideas takes place. Church problems based on the ethnic and nationalistic ideas are especially emphasized in this article. Ethnic problems in the Church are presented as an ecclesiological distortion and redefinition of Christian ideals, from which the issue of ethnophiletism was discussed more detailed. The paper shows the problems and also indicates possible solutions in the spirit of the Orthodox Church teaching. Discussing questions of the universal councils decisions and returning to the original ecclesial standards, this paper points out the necessity of eliminating dangerous ideas inside the Church.

The article shows the attitude the Cossacks presented on two Kiev synods in 1628 and 1629. Their strong position during the Synod of Kiev in 1628 led Meleciusz Smotrycki to give up his efforts not only to reconcile the Orthodox and Orthodox priests, but above all to persuade the latter to accept union. The Cossacks, opposing the presence of the followers of the Orthodox Church at the synod of Lwów, undoubtedly expressed their uncompromising stance on the issue of the Uniate-Orthodox reconciliation. The attitude of the Cossacks at the synods of Kiev in 1628–1629 also provides us with another argument for her independent actions in the religious field, which should be treated as a clear testimony of the importance of matters of faith in her activities. Just like during the Kiev events from the beginning of 1625, the Cossacks’ activity was at odds with the attitude of the then authorities of the Orthodox Church, which undoubtedly were both Job Borecki and Piotr Mohyła. The undeniable fact of the Zaporozhians’ influence on the change of their initially positive attitude towards the idea of re-entering the union with the Uniate Church, makes them increasingly self-supporting in defending the rights, privileges and, above all, the sovereignty of the Orthodox Church regardless of the weaknesses of its spiritual leaders.

The article presents the figure of St. Vladimir the Great, grand prince of Kievan Rus’, and his role in the process of christianization of Kievan Rus’. Author recalls the circumstances in which the ruler was baptized, such as Vladimir’s participation in the liberation of Crimea and Korsun from the influence of rebels grouped under the leadership of Bardas Phocas or marriage to Anna Porphyrogenita. A significant part of the article is dedicated to the description of the Orthodox Church’s structure in the lands of Kievan Rus’ with important centers in Kiev, Navahrudak, Belgorod, Yuryev, Chernihov, Pereyaslav, Polotsk, Volodymyr-Volynskyi, Rostov and Turow. The close relationship between the newly established Church and the state has been emphasized. Christianity united the society in Kievan Rus’ and gave it an opportunity of cultural and intellectual development.

Muscovite metropolitan Makarius (1542-1563) began a new period in the history of canonisation. Until the time of Makarius’ councils in the Russian Orthodox Church there were 22 universally venerated national saints. During the two local councils in 1547 and 1549 the cult of other 39 saints was established. Almost all the canonised saints were already venerated in churches of separate dioceses or monasteries. The councils only confirmed the local veneration or made that cult universal for all Russia. The councils ultimately formulated the rite of canonisation. The lives of the newly canonised saints were introduced into the hagiographical literature. When Makarius was still the archbishop of Novgorod, he initiated collecting information about the Russian saints and writing their services, their lives or new versions of their lives. In Prologue – a calendar collection of short lives of the saints and some teachings – only short versions of the new saints’ lives were introduced. Only 8 manuscript copies of Prologue containing those lives exist now. Therefore the Makarius’ hagiographical body was introduced into a few copies of the Simple Prologue. The lives of the new saints were equally introduced into autumn and spring volume of the Prologue. The contemporarily existing copies allow to distinguish Makarius’ variant of Pskov version and Makarius’ variant of the wide version. The materials included in the Prologue are connected not only with the councils of 1547 and 1549, but also more widely with the activity undertaken by metropolitan Makarius in order to systematise the hagiographical literature. Existence of the copies of Makarius’ variant of the wide version of the Simple Prologue on the territory of the Commonwealth proves the mutual influence of the religious literature and of the close links between the countries of the cultural acreage of Slavia orthodoxa.

In the XIX-XX centuries there was rather a strong tradition of liturgics texts existed as manuscripts. In the XX century, after the enforced cease of the Church book-printing, such a means of texts spread became the main one. The manuscript tradition is less codified so, after Moscow Patriarchy renewed its publishing activity, this not standardized manuscript norm influenced the books printed. This article is devoted to the problems of the influence provided by the manuscript norm on the Church Slavonic printed books of the XX century.

The original Byelorussian text of the funding charter by which hetman Gregory Chodkiewicz provided a livelihood for the priests of the Orthodox parish in his familial township of Zabłudów. The charter also specifies the fees which the priests were allowed to charge their parishioners for religious services rendered. The charter is a vivid testimony of the religious tolerance typical of Great Duchy of Lithuania in the XVI century.

The history of the Orthodox Church on the territory of the Zabłudów estates and of Zabłudów itself has not been published much. In the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, Zabłudów first belonged to the magnate family of Chodkiewicz and from 1599 to the Radziwiłł family. The Orthodox parish in Zabłudów has never changed its religion. In this study, I would like to discuss the history of Orthodoxy in the Zabłudów estates in order to better understand the life and death of St. martyr Gabriel.

The article “Belarussian Churches: chronicle of bells between 1950 and 1980” written on the basis of declassified archives of Belarus, as well as stories of clergy and parishioners Ringers recorded during expeditions of 2003-2010. to study the 247 bells of Orthodox Churches. Through the testimony of believers author reveals the living history events godless government policy directed against the Church and its ministers, religious education and external ritual sound symbol of the Orthodox faith – bells. The confrontation with the power of parishioners helped keep the number of temples in the republic sets of church bells ringing and the canon itself, which is carefully passed on from generation to generation. In 2015, the Institute of Culture of Belarus began to collect documents for the introduction of elements of “traditional zvonarstvo” 21 Temple in the list of intangible spiritual heritage of the Republic of Belarus.

Srbljak is a collection of hymns and services dedicated to Serbian saints of the Orthodox Church. In particular regard to the texts of the services of the Serbian saint women: Angelina (30 VII), Anastasia Nemanic (22 VI), Eughenia – Euphrosinia (tsarina Militsa; 19 VII) and Zlata of Meghlen (13 X) one can observe the changes of the norms applied to the liturgical language in Serbia. The service of St Angelina, written around 1520 or 1530, was included in the Rakovatch manuscript of Srbljak (1714) edited in the Serbian version of Church Slavonic. The same book printed in 1761 in Rimnik contained already the texts in the Russian version of Church Slavonic as did also the Belgrade edition of the Srbljak edited in 1861. It was only in 1986 that the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church printed Srbljak in Serbian Slavonic, allowing the introduction of seven services in modern Serbian (including four services translated from Romanian). The last edition of Srbljak shows general tendencies in contemporary Serbia to use more and more often the modern Serbian as the liturgical language.

Nikephoros was born around 1537 in Trikala in Thesalia. After the monastic tonsure in 1557, he went to study in the famous university of Padua. In 1572 he was nominated patriarch’s Exarch in Venice, though still remaining the administrator of patriarch Jeremiah. He arrived in Constantinople around 1580 at the time of return to the patriarchal throne of Jeremiah II Tranos. Jeremiah had an excellent knowledge of the level of the church life and of problems of the Slavs. Multilateral action against the efforts of Vatican to impose the new church calendar on the orthodox inhabitants of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was an excellent means to tighten the bonds with the distant province of the patriarchal throne. Jeremiah sent for the first time protosyncel Nikephoros, archimandrite Dionisios and their translator Theodore in order to obviate the problem and deliver patriarch’s letters addressed to the hierarchs as well as the orthodox faithful in the Commonwealth. In a decree of the Misonos synod in Constantinople of 1592 the patriarchs of the East expressed the necessity of sending to the Commonwealth the ecumenical patriarch’s exarch. Based on the common decision of the patriarch Jeremiah of Constantinople, Meletios of Alexandria and the representatives of Antiochia and Jerusalem the protosyncel Nikephoros was appointed for this post. He was assigned the first in the Church hierarchy, the eldest among the teachers and the protosyncel of the ecumenical throne with all the rights to intervene in the affaires of the diocese belonging to the 51patriarchate of Constantinople. He was also given the right to supervise, summon church trials and counsel in the matters of faith as well as in other church affaires. In 1595 Nikephoros set off for the Commonwealth, but was arrested and imprisoned while crossing the border. He managed to escape after 6 months. Then he strived to fortify and defend the faith, to propagate education. Moreover he was a lecturer at the Ostrog Academy, he dealt with the apostasy among the hierarchy. His activity made him many enemies, therefore Nikephoros was falsely accused of spying for the Turkish/Osman Empire, entering the Commonwealth against the king’s ban, usurping the role of the representative of the patriarch of Constantinople. During the law suit he was also accused of participating in the anti-union synod in Brest. Several prosecutors withdrew their accusations, even the judges were not sure that Nikephoros was guilty, therefore king Sigismund II Vasa could not give the court’s ruling and delayed it till more satisfying evidence would be gathered. In the meantime Nikephoros was kept in the stronghold in Malbork. Though Nikephoros was never proven guilty and despite numerous interventions of patriarch of Constantinople, of patriarch Meletios of Alexandria and of prince Constantine Ostrogsky as well as of many others, the patriarch’s Exarch for Commonwealth died in prison of hunger. He died like a martyr for having fought for orthodoxy against the powerful of the Commonwealth wanting to introduce the Church union.

The Orthodox Church in the II Republic of Poland, reviving as a continuation of the Russian Church, gradually underwent relatively important changes. Under the influence of a very active national Ukrainian movement as well as of the Byelorussian movement and the Polish authorities, it ceased to be a nationally homogenous whole. The Byelorussian and Ukrainian circles actively strived to introduce the national languages – Byelorussian and Ukrainian – into the liturgy. By doing so they sought to restore the national traditions in the Church in Byelorussian and Ukrainian lands, taken away from Poland after the XVIII century partitions. The aspirations to underline the national traditions in the Church were accompanied by the desire to give the Orthodox Church in Poland the national Byelorussian and Ukrainian character. The gradual introduction of Ukrainian and Byelorussian into the liturgy and church life went with great difficulty due to the reluctance of the Church hierarchy – mostly Russians – as well as the state authorities, aiming decisively at the assimilation of the national minorities into the Polish nation. Polonization, supported by the state authorities, formed the circles of the Orthodox Polish, particularly among the orthodox soldiers of the Polish Army. At the same time the fundamental community of the faithful consisted of Byelorussians and Ukrainians, who, by the means of introduction of the national languages into the liturgy and the church life (among other things), wanted to use the Orthodox Church to develop their own national ideas.

The article shows and discusses unknown sources – epistolary answers of Meletius Smotryckyj to the accusation on the hand of the King Sigismund III and his collaborators in conjunction with ordination of new Orthodox high hierarchy in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by the Jerusalem patriarch Theophan, who stayed in the Ruthenian part of the Commonwealth in 1620–1621. Smotryckyj was nominated by him to the Archbishopric of Połock then. All those nominations of the Orthodox bishops were made without the consent of th Polish King, who was entitled to the giving of the higher dignities in the Orthodox Church in the Commonwealth. Smotrycki, in the letters published here, tries to defend Theophan’s decision, thus also defending the rights of the Orthodox population in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, who – as a result of the policy of King Sigismund III and the actions of the Catholic Church – was forced to fight for restoring legal status of the Orthodox Church after the Union of Brest (1595/1596). The Smotryckyj’s responses published here are the oldest known epistolary works of this famous writer and hierarch. The arguments used in them were reflected in the well-known polemical works of Smotryckyj published in 1621–1622.

The article presents the events related to the takeover of the Zhyrovitse monastery with the miraculous icon of the Mother of God by the Uniates. The Uniats came into possession of Zhyrovitse as a result of a fake trial and a groundless accusation of the murder of the owner of the estate, Ivan Soltan. Iwan Mieleszko, a supporter of the uniats, sentenced a person in the Zhyrovitse sanctuary and had his property confiscated. Subsequent subordination of the monastery to the Basilians and uniat metropolitans, indicated that Ivan Mieleszko was the executor of the planned plan to take away the sanctuary from the Orthodox Church of Zhyrovitse.

At the end of 1980s and at the beginning of 1990s the question of the liturgical language (Church Slavonic or modern Bulgarian) became vital anew, the discussions were initiated by journalists, priests, theologians, linguists and others. In 1998 the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church allowed to use modern Bulgarian as well as Church Slavonic in the services but no church uses exclusively modern language for the liturgy. The present paper contains the results of the inquiry into the liturgical language in Bulgarian Orthodox Church, carried out in Sofia, Plovdiv and Kozloduy after the decision of the Bulgarian Holy Synod. The centre of attention is focused on the language attitudes of the liturgical language in Bulgaria nowadays.

During the Counter-Reformation issues of using the national languages in the liturgy and the rite of the church became the source of lively discussion of the representatives of the Roman Church (Catholic) and the Greek Church (Orthodox). Strategy outlined by the Council of Trent to maintain the dominance of Latin as the universal language of all Christians subordinate to Pope after the establishment of the union in Brest-on-the-Bug had to be significantly modified. The best interests of the Church consolidation required concessions on the part of Rome and recognition of the Slavonic language to be, as effective as the Latin an instrument of the saving activity of the Church. Following the Slavonic, Polish language gradually breaks into the missionary and catechetical use, which the Greek Catholics are increasingly eager to speak. The subject of this article is the phenomenon of coexistence of many languages in liturgical and administrative practice of the Latin and Russian Christians in the Republic of Poland in the 16 th -18th century and reflection on resulting from this fact preferences and translations of polemic and religious texts.
