Opis:
The theme of a child in Christian art appears from the very beginning of its existence. Usually, it carries a meanings related to the innocence, that belongs to children, a vocation to a new, unknown Life. Works of art remind believers of the need to conform their souls to a child’s ones in order to fulfill this vocation (Mark 10: 13–16). In the context of the Orthodox Christology depiction of the Savior as a child always expresses faith in the true Incarnation of the Logos. Faith in God’s adoption of entire human nature for its divinization and salvation. With the help of art, the Orthodox Church presents the Mysteries in which Almighty God becomes a helpless child while maintaining his divine nature. Church, using artistic medias, indicates a tight connection between Incarnation of Christ and His redeeming Resurrection presented also in Eucharist.

Opis:
The issue of children in Orthodoxy is extremely rich and varied, we discover it in all the components of spiritual culture. In the introduction to the volume, the primary figures of children in the Old Testament and the motifs associated with them, will be discussed. Later, the attention will turn to the New Testament, which places the image of the child at the center of the story of salvation – the incarnation of the Logos, the nativity and childhood of Jesus, of Virgin Mary, and of S. John the Baptist, Jesus’ attitude towards children who are seen as a rule model – is the first group of motifs. Then, the martyrdom of children will be presented, from massacre of the Innocents of Bethlehem to victims of the latest persecutions. Next, attention will be paid to the saints’ childhood and youth in hagiology and iconography, indicating that they can be presented as examples of the fulfillment of prophecies, continuation of biblical history or testimonies of social life. The world of children has always particularly concerned the Church, leading to the expansion of the rituals associated with them. But the dynamics of the present day also poses several tasks and challenges for the Church, which often finds right solutions, sometimes just halfway solutions, every so often the issues reveal discrepancies. However, modern times are no exception in this regard, and researching the past, discovering and studying the old processes, attitudes and models often reveals unexpected perspectives. Upbringing in the Orthodox Church, for the Church, by the Church, teaching the truths of faith and religion, the problem of the language of prayer and of catechism, a solid ethical foundation, building authority – all this requires both adults and young people to feel responsible, and the condition is knowledge and experience coming also from a scientific view of the past. Studies, such as those collected in this volume, should contribute to this.

Opis:
Texts from the New Testament – namely Mark 6, 13 and James 5, 14-15 – witness to the apostolic origin of the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. It was already known in the first ages of Christian Church as Origen, Eusebius of Cesarea, John Chrysostom, Cyrill of Alexandria, St Hypolite, St Serapion of Thmuis write about it. The ordo of the contemporary rite was formed finally in the XIV century. At the synod of Kiev in 1640 the text of catechism was approved and most important questions concerning the liturgy and rites were solved. As a result The Great Euchologion was edited in 1646. The first images representing the sacrament appeared only in printed euchologions of which the earliest was integrated into a vignette header placed in the Euchologion of Stratin (1606). The same type of pictures appear in other editions during the whole XVII century. The possible differences concern the number of details included in the images. The sacrament is presented in most cases in liturgical books, much fewer are actual paintings – icons or frescoes. In the Ruthenian art (e.g. St’Andrew’s Church in Kiev or Holy Trinity Church in the Laure of Kiev-Pechersk), apart from the narrative images presenting the sacrament, there are also – under the influence of baroque art – the ones of symbolic (for example Euchologion edited in Pochaev in 1741) or typological nature (among others using as figure the parable of merciful Samaritan). Still in the XVII and XVIII one does not observe significant changes in the way of presenting the sacrament of anointing of the sick either in the Orthodox Church (as a result of polemic with Catholics) or in the Greek Catholic Church (as a result of Latinization): there were always seven priests administering seven unctions.

Opis:
The icon of Mother of God “the Burning Bush” forms a theological and biblical synthesis of Mariology. Its idea is based on the excerpt from the Book of Exodus relating the vision in which Moses saw the Angel of God in the flame coming from the middle of a bush. The Old Testament types of announcements of Mary’s role, evoked in the icon, put into the categories of “the Burning Bush”, “the Tree of Jesse”, “Jacob’s Ladder”, “the Gate of Ezekiel” and others, are a visual form of the liturgical texts. The original icon of Mother of God “ the Burning Bush” contained many verbal inscriptions, explaining the role of Theotokos in accomplishment of the salutary will of God. The central composition with Mother of God and Emmanuel surrounded by multitudes of angels with various attributes – liturgical utensils, books, candles and others – evokes a solemn liturgy.

Opis:
Adam Stalony-Dobrzański is an Orthodox artist who significantly influenced the image of the Orthodox art in the second half of the 20th century in Poland, and at the same time contributed to the renaissance of Byzantine-Ruthenian iconography. By popularizing the form of a stained glass window as an element of the Orthodox church interiors, he extended the tradition of Eastern Christian art, finding a medium in the form of glass and lead to express the mystery of the icon. He is the author of at least 342 stained glass compositions made for Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant churches. The multitude of iconographic themes appearing in Stalony-Dobrzański’s stained glass windows – referring to the centuries-old tradition of Christian art – features representations of children. These are the scenes showing the childhood of Jesus and Mary (the Orthodox church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gródek), presentations of St. Sophia with Faith, Hope and Love (the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Hajnówka, the House of the Metropolitan in Warsaw), the image of the Guardian Angel leading a child (the Catholic church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Stalowa Wola-Rozwadów) or Christ blessing children (the Evangelical-Augsburg Church of Holy Trinity in Warsaw). A kind of iconographic novelty is introduced here with depictions of children as Unknown Saints of our time (the Orthodox church of St John Climacus in Warsaw). In the stained glass windows, we also find images of Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia – three children who witnessed the apparitions of The Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, recognized by the Catholic Church.

The beginnings of the Orthodox parish in Topilec, the Białystok poviat, date back to the first half of the 16th century. There is a cemetery chapel erected in 1951 on its territory. In the years 2018–2020, comprehensive artistic work was carried out there. The iconostasis of the chapel was renovated and supplemented with a deacon doors. Also the polychromes of the presbitery and the chapel’s vaults were also developed. The depictions of the saints were inspired by the local iconographic tradition and early Christian art. The symbolism and aesthetics taken from the „martyrs’ era” are intended to emphasize the exceptional importance of the cemetery, where many innocent victims of the post-war period were buried.

The artistic venture of Archimandrite Zenon (Teodor) represents a long way of searching for new inspirations for contemporary icon painting, which led him to the beginnings of Christianity. His work was influenced and motivated mainly by the theology of the eminent Orthodox historian and canonist, Father Nicholas Afanasiev. Father Zenon, relying on the theological assumptions of the Russian thinker, creates his own, modern, artistic language, becoming at the same time the most significant and influential among contemporary artist-iconographers.

Opis:
The article concentrate on several aspects related to the person of Saint Thecla. One of the most important issues is the presentation of Thecla as historical figure and her role – a female Saint equal to the apostles – in the history of Christianity. Another aspect of the considerations is the searching for this saint woman iconography based on the analysis of the oldest surviving examples in comparison with the content of the hagiographic “Acts of Paul and Thecla”, which were written in the 2nd and 3rd centuries after Christ. The considerations were used in the development of an iconographic pattern, which contains historiographic premises of presenting the first martyr Saint Thecla on the Deacon’s Doors into the orthodox church of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker in Topilec village.
