Opis:
The first and especially the second decade of the 21st century resulted in the creation of many iconographic schools in Poland. These were schools of various ranges, in different regions and addressed to various groups of people. They developed in a formally regulated manner in secular and ecclesial institutions, but also in private art studios or parishes. Depending on the experience and educational background of the teacher, icon writing can be a science consistent with canon and developed on the basis of the Orthodox religion it can deviate significantly from the models adopted in that culture. There are also innovative tendencies in the iconography represented by theologically aware artists. All of them, however, are united by the fact that there is a dispute over the Polish nomenclature of activities related to making icons. One basic linguistical dilemma among theorists is whether we should use the term „to write an icon”. The word „icon-writer” already exists in the Dictionary of the Polish Language, but „icon-writing” is replaced with „iconography” or „icon painting”. Is the reference to „Russianism” or „Greekism” in this case justification for not introducing the word „icon-writing” into the formal circulation as well? And so what about the use of the word „icon”, which in Greek means „a picture”? Being aware of the complexity of the problem, I would like to outline the lexical dilemmas related to the spreading of the art of creating icons in Poland, recalling the theological dimension of icons in cultural context.

The article discusses the role of Alexander Nevsky – a Russian prince and a saint of Orthodox Church. Russian writing sources describe him primarily as a winner of the battles against the Swedes in 1240 (the battle of Neva) and the forces of the Livonian Order and Bishopric of Dorpat in 1242 (the Battle on the Ice) and prince who became a monk before his death in 1263. The cult of Alexander began shortly after his death however, its enormous development came only later. The popularity of saint prince increased during the times of Ivan Terrible – after the mid-16th century and in the age of Peter the Great – in the 18th century. The oldest preserved icons of Alexander come from the second half of 16th century and show him as a holy monk. In the 18th-20th centuries the art of official church is dominated by images of Alexander as a ruler and victorious warrior.

In the article, the author focuses on relations between real presence of iconic Prototype and functionality of icons described by V.V. Lepachin in monography entitled Икона и иконичность (Seged 2000). This aspect plays an important role in pastoral activity of archpriest Leoncjusz Tofiluk, the Foundateur of Iconographic School at Bielsk Podlaski in Poland since 1991. The school is a very important place for promotion of iconological spirituality not only in Orthodox Church but also for Catholic and Protestants communities.

Opis:
Orthodox liturgical practice indicates a blessing, dedication and consecration of icons. It is not unified within the universal Church and within the autocephalous Church and local liturgical traditions. This article focuses on explaining the meaning of the blessing rites in the practice of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. This practice is largely consistent with the practice of other Orthodox Churches of the Slavic tradition, including The Russian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, the Bulgarian Patriarchate and the Serbian Patriarchate. This part deals with the features attributed to the icons: canonicity, uniqueness and sanctity. Next, an analysis of the liturgical rites of blessing was carried out and their meaning was shown.

The authors describe the history of two images of St. Adalbert created in the technique and canon of writing Orthodox icons. Atanas Kameshev, a Bulgarian Orthodox iconographer, created both images. The first of them, asso ciated with the Gniezno Synods-Reunions tradition, which began in 2000, was hung in the local cathedral. The second, made several years later on the Mayor of Gniezno’s request, was to be presented to Pope John Paul II. It eventually found a home on the altar of Rome’s San Bartolomeo church.

Holy Week, inseparable from the mystery of Christ’s Resurrection, is the center of the liturgical year. Each of the following days has its own specific meaning and extensive hymnographic material. The graphic representation is also connected with the content of liturgical rites. This article discusses the meaning of iconographic representations that are dynamically present at services – by carrying them from the presbitery to the middle of the church or carrying them around the temple in a procession (the icon of Christ the Bridegroom on Holy Monday, the icon of Christ crucified on Good Friday, the Epitaphios with a representation of Christ lying in the tomb on Good Friday and Holy Saturday). The text also discusses the relationship between the aforementioned icons and liturgical texts sung during the services.

The beginnings of the Orthodox parish in Topilec, the Białystok poviat, date back to the first half of the 16th century. There is a cemetery chapel erected in 1951 on its territory. In the years 2018–2020, comprehensive artistic work was carried out there. The iconostasis of the chapel was renovated and supplemented with a deacon doors. Also the polychromes of the presbitery and the chapel’s vaults were also developed. The depictions of the saints were inspired by the local iconographic tradition and early Christian art. The symbolism and aesthetics taken from the „martyrs’ era” are intended to emphasize the exceptional importance of the cemetery, where many innocent victims of the post-war period were buried.

The artistic venture of Archimandrite Zenon (Teodor) represents a long way of searching for new inspirations for contemporary icon painting, which led him to the beginnings of Christianity. His work was influenced and motivated mainly by the theology of the eminent Orthodox historian and canonist, Father Nicholas Afanasiev. Father Zenon, relying on the theological assumptions of the Russian thinker, creates his own, modern, artistic language, becoming at the same time the most significant and influential among contemporary artist-iconographers.

In 2018, members of the social community „Our memory” and the Belarusian Historical Society in Białystok, after many years of searching, found in the village cemetery of the Orthodox parish of St. St. Peter and Paul in Malesze, the remains of the destroyed and forgotten grave of Maria Pietruczuk. In 2020, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church included her among the Martyred Saints of Chełm and Podlasie. She is the Saint of the Orthodox Church. The article presents the ideological, theological, architectural and iconographic premises and conditionings for creating the design of a new monument to St. Martyrs of Mary. The aim is to provide a worthy form of Her eternal rest, memory and prayer of the faithful. The idea of building the monument and its design were blessed by His Eminence Sawa, the Orthodox Metropolitan of Warsaw and the whole of Poland. The form of the monument refers to the temple open to the heavens. It is a system of 4 symbolic forms: a cross, an altar apse, a sarcophagus and a ambona-analogion, symbolically representing: Golgotha, the Tomb of Resurrection of the Jesus Christ and the Mary Mother of God (hierathejon), a reliquary and the stone moved away from the Tomb and Cenacle. The sequential juxtaposition of these forms and their theological and cosmological meaning tries to strengthen the spirit of this place. It builds a synthetic symbolic image of the cemetery temple in search of its path of the faithful’s eternal pilgrimage to salvation.

Opis:
The icon of Mother of God “the Burning Bush” forms a theological and biblical synthesis of Mariology. Its idea is based on the excerpt from the Book of Exodus relating the vision in which Moses saw the Angel of God in the flame coming from the middle of a bush. The Old Testament types of announcements of Mary’s role, evoked in the icon, put into the categories of “the Burning Bush”, “the Tree of Jesse”, “Jacob’s Ladder”, “the Gate of Ezekiel” and others, are a visual form of the liturgical texts. The original icon of Mother of God “ the Burning Bush” contained many verbal inscriptions, explaining the role of Theotokos in accomplishment of the salutary will of God. The central composition with Mother of God and Emmanuel surrounded by multitudes of angels with various attributes – liturgical utensils, books, candles and others – evokes a solemn liturgy.
