intergenerational relations - Opis:
- The decision to take responsibility for the care of seniors is largely conditioned by social and cultural factors. In the article, the correlation between collectivism/individualism and taking care of the elderly is described with the example of selected countries. The second part of the article is the analysis of social and cultural factors that have an impact on Poles’ opinions about institutional care and family obligations to elders. In the third part, new trends and social changes that will affect decisions regarding the care of the elderly are presented. There are clear differences between countries with a collectivist culture (where elderly care is the responsibility of family members), and the countries that value individualism (where institutional care is popular). In Poland, there is still social pressure to take care of older family members without institutional support, but the demographic situation and migration will change this attitude and popularize nonfamilial care.
