Opis:
The perspective of understanding beauty has been interpreted in many different ways in philosophy. The classical definition of beauty which has originated from realism, says that something is beautiful when one likes it at the moment he or she perceives it, it refers to the object of beauty and it shows us the being in relation to the act of cognition and to the act of attraction. Beauty appears to be the expression of ultimate fulfilment of being by the act of truth and good. The contemporary times set in the tradition of realism have been gradually limiting the extent of beauty by its dethronization and reducing it to aesthetic values, or even suggesting to remove beauty from aesthetics. Finally, instead of beauty as a purpose of the art, the modern aesthetics is offering an “anti-art” oriented on ugliness. Consequently, beauty has been separated from the truth and good, and subsequently from the man. The dispute on the understanding of beauty is focused on one particular question which is: “Why must beauty, the lost reality of the modern aesthetics, be saved“? Will the salvaged beauty – the means to pursue one’s aim associated with philosophical anthropology and general metaphysics, save the humans?Or rather, along with the postaesthetics and freedom, its only purpose, by breaking up with the philosophies of being and human being, “have we too easily believed that beauty will not save us”?

The beauty is primarily, God’s revelation. God is the supreme beauty, as he is its source and ultimate purpose; this supreme beauty touches the human soul and makes it inclined to the reformation. hence, we can discuss the beauty within the perspective of theology. Obviously, what is meant here is the metaphysical character of the art, which can also be called the theology of beauty, or the theology of art. The experience of the authentic beauty may restore a human being to enthusiasm and trust. The beauty is the key to the mystery and the call to the transcendence, that’s why, it can be the path towards God. The art, in all of its forms of expression, while confronting with the great existential issues, including the suffering, may also gain the religious sense and turn into the way of the deep internal reflection and authentic spirituality.

Opis:
A belief in the fundamental need for beauty in a man’s life and experience was one of the principal threads in the anthropology of Karol Wojtyła and John Paul II. The subject of the article is the role of beauty according to the author from the theological, anthropological and artistic perspectives with reference to classical and phenomenological aesthetics as well as to the views of the popes Paul VI and Benedict XVI. The principal guide is here the Letter to Artists in which this reflection is especially strongly visible. It is an important source because in the writings of John Paul II the thought of beauty seldom comes to the foreground. It is not intrusive as it remains hidden in its essence, although its concept is constantly present, “translucent” in the texts written throughout several decades, touching upon various problems, representing various genres (poetry, homilies, academic lectures, letters, exhortations, encyclicals),and thus in different, sometimes radically, expression styles. That is why a specific“reconstruction” of the thought has to be based on “peeling out” this reflections from the author’s various texts and subjecting them to uniform inspection. The aim and the objective of the article is the analysis of the papal thought on beauty in reference to artistic work and its current condition.

Opis:
Interpretation of Gregorian chant should be considered in terms not only of musical beauty. As in the Greek triad unchanging ethical and aesthetic to which side of truth and goodness beauty belongs, they exist next to each other three factors, which, according to Pope Benedict XVI deciding on the sacred liturgical music and its usefulness. These are: text, composition and execution. The texts used in the compositions of Gregorian chant are excellent. All songs belonging to the Mass authenticum fontium gregorianorum, use excerpts from the Scripture, especially the Book of Psalms. Through the scientific work of the faithful (more faithful than before Vatican II) restoration the Gregorian melodies of the songs, stage investigation for musical truth and its knowledge and understanding is very advanced. The long process of composition of the Gregorian repertoire ended in the eleventh century. During this time all the developed forms of music known now forms of music and liturgical Mass and Office, defined style of composition, and by modality sought to express „elusive” spiritual substance. Direct witnesses of the state of preservation of musical monuments are numerous neumatic manuscripts, created even during the living oral tradition, but recorded on parchment using neumes in campo aperto. The last element of that triad, subject to subjective assessment is the interpretation. The Church has not taken any official position so far, which is why we now have to deal with many diverse schools of interpretation. The text has approximated the three most important: the concept of the rhythm of Solesmes (known method), school Paris (Marcel Peres) and optics semiological initiated by Dom Eugène Cardine, using science in the service of the performing arts. Different approaches will be analyzed in terms of the truth of the premises on they are based. The author attempts their valuation in the context of historical truth and beauty understood in the context of musical performance.

Opis:
Speaking of the contemporary religious art in general, it should be said that the classic Rudolf Otto’s theory of numinosum – an irrational element of deity – has still been valid and relevant. The author develops some Otto’s ideas in an analysis of two major contemporary Polish compositions: III Symphony “Symphony of sorrowful songs” (1976) by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Passion according to St. Mark (2008) by Paweł Mykietyn. This article focuses on beauty – a special and fundamental value, apparent in different layers of a masterpiece: the words, the sound, and the time.
