Opis:
Gdańsk was an important centre shaping the musical culture of the Republic of Poland in past centuries. It is evidenced by, among others, preserved musical instruments which were built by the makers working in the city, or were used by city musicians. The Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznań has in possession two instruments which are associated with Danzig — the lute-cittern made by Johann Goldberg and the clavichord by Johann Adolph Hass. Both instruments provide a valid evidence of music-making in the old Gdańsk. Luthier and musician, Johann Goldberg was a promoter of Gdańsk’s musical life in the 18th century, and he especially valued domestic music making. He was on friendly terms with the most important musicians of the city. The fact that most probably Goldberg primarily produced lute-citterns may suggest that this kind of music-making among the inhabitants of the eighteenth-century Gdańsk was popular. The Hass’ clavichord in turn does not document the musical instruments making in Gdańsk, but it is a perfect example that instruments from the best European workshops were imported to the city. In eighteenth-century Germany one of the leading centres of the clavichords making was Hamburg. In that city worked the famous Hass family. It primarily consisted of father Hieronymus Albrecht Hass (1689–1752) and his son Johann Adolph (1713–1771). Their clavichords were among the best available at that time in Europe. To this day 27 instruments have survived from their workshop — 11 built by H. A. Hass and 16 by J. A. Hass. Instruments from Hass’ workshop were highly prized by the end of the eighteenth century. The content of article about Johann Adolph Hass’ clavichord and Johann Goldberg’s instruments is another small contribution to our knowledge about Gdańsk’s old instruments.

Opis:
The article attempts to describe the early, pre-opera reception of music written by Władysław Żeleński (1837–1921), one of the most important Polish composers and music educators working in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The lower limit of the study period is the first mention of the composer in the press, namely the review of the Piano Sonata Op. 5 by Józef Sikorski (1859). This period ends in the year 1785, just before the premiere of Żeleński’s the first opera, Konrad Wallenrod. The source material was all Polish periodicals of that time, comprised of musical specialized magazines, art magazines, general public magazines and journals (including Cracow’s “Czas”). The aim of the author of this paper was to present the main problems (and their evolution) which occur in Polish critical-thinking about music in the context of Żeleński’s orches-tral works, as well as songs, piano and chamber music. Among these issues, the most important seem to be the reviewers’ attempt (initially tentative) to classify Żeleński by one of the current trends — insert him in the rigid framework of interpretation. The following oppositional categories can be mentioned: technicism and lyricism, talent and genius, youthfulness and maturity, classical and salon music, “national” style and a cosmopolitan one. One of the main issues for critics was to determine the influences in Żeleński’s works, and thus find out the artistic way which he fol-lowed. And here are the most common patterns mentioned by the reviewers: the classic style, the “national” one (in this case his songs were very often evaluated as linked with Stanisław Moniszko’ works) and the New German School. In the critical-thinking of music Żeleński somehow balances between these concepts. The aim of the author of this paper was to highlight the most important arguments that appear in discussions and — additionally — to supplement historiographic base associated with the composer.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the fragment of manuscript ms 10 stored in the Archive of the Benedictine Sisters in Przemyśl. The manuscript consists of 70 cards and comes probably from the mid-eighteenth century. The book, intended for the organist, consists of liturgical chants written in the soprano key with an accompanying bass line, exercises based on the bass line and 77 organ works. In addition, on the cards 64V-69V of this manuscript some observations about organ teaching are written. Those observations are subject for this very considerations and the text in the original grammatical and spelling form is attached to this article. The teaching notes from ms 10 are titled Understanding of good and bad consonances and consist of 29 unnumbered points illustrated with musical examples. They provide guidance on the implementation of basso continuo, organ accompaniment for plainchant and polyphonic singing and composing or organ improvisation. It is so far the only known text of this kind in the Polish language dating the eighteenth century. Author and copyist of this text remain unknown, but we can assume that it has been prescribed from another source by a nun-organist, and only in a small part reformulated. Its relationship to a female religious community is indicated by, apart from place of preservation, the endings of verbs appearing in the teaching notes. From the course of argument it can be concluded that the method of teaching included in the Understanding of good and bad consonances refers to the partimento tradition that began in the late seventeenth century in the Italian conservatories, and later, in the eighteenth century and early nineteenth, has been popularized in many parts of Europe through published books. The term partimento determined bassline, with or without numbering, which is the basis for improvising or creating self-composition. While dealing with the bass lines, a student learned at the beginning about the construction of intervals and chords and the way of conducting voices. When it was no longer a problem, he could expand the bass to the accompaniment or to the solo piece.
