Nowadays (October 2013) information about ship’s position is obtained generally from specialized electronic positioning systems, in particular, at present functionally satellite navigation systems (SNS) as GPS and GLONASS, and satellite based augmentation systems (SBAS) as EGNOS, WAAS and MSAS. Two next SNS, Galileo and BeiDou, and two next SBAS, GAGAN and SDCM, are under construction. After all the user of these systems, the maritime user also, continually meets and will meet with numerous different limitations of SNS coverage in restricted area, SBAS and DGPS reference stations coverage area, the lack of integrity information about the systems, and of many charts referred to WGS–84 datum, with problem of position fix in restricted area, etc.

Opis:
To date, a ship’s position can generally be obtained from functional satellite navigation systems (SNS), such as Global Position Systems (GPS and GLONASS), and Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS), such as (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation system (GAGAN), MTSAT Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS) and Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). Sometimes these systems are collectively called Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Two more SNS, Galileo and BeiDou, one more SBAS, System for Differential Corrections and Monitoring (SDCM), and new regional systems, such as Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) in Japan and Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) in India, are also under construction. Information about all of these 11 systems is available on the internet. The number of links and the type of the information obtained from two search engines, Google and Bing, for the different keywords concerning each system are shown in the paper. Additionally, the analysis of the character and usefulness of the information placed on the pages of governmental organizations and institutions administering the above-mentioned systems, manufacturers of the satellites, receivers and different kinds of the institutional users is also provided.

Opis:
Position determination of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) depends on the stability and accuracy of the measured time. However, since satellite vehicles (SVs) travel at velocities significantly larger than the receivers and, more importantly, the electromagnetic impulses propagate through changing gravitational potentials, enormous errors stemming from relativity-based clock offsets would cause a position error of about 11 km to be accumulated after one day. Based on the premise of the constancy of light, two major relativistic effects are described: time dilation and gravitational-frequency shift. Following the individual interests of the author, formulas of both are scrupulously derived from general- and special-relativity theory principles; moreover, in the penultimate section, the equations are used to calculate the author’s own numerical values of the studied parameters for various GNSSs and one Land Navigation Satellite System (LNSS).

Although integrity concepts for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are ubiquitous in the aviation community, integrity algorithms of comparable maturity have not yet been developed for maritime users. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) specifies requirements different from those specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). These different requirements affect the design of the integrity algorithms with respect to integrity risk allocation and threat space. This paper describes a novel integrity algorithm based on conditions valid for maritime users. The performance of the novel integrity algorithm has been assessed and compared to a conventional Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) approach consistent with IMO requirements.

Each year, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) improve their accuracy, availability, continuity, integrity, and reliability. Due to these continual improvements, the systems are increasingly used in various modes of transport, including rail transport, the subject of this publication. GNSS are used for rail passenger information, rail traffic management, and rail traffic control. These applications differ in the positioning requirements that satellite navigation systems must meet. This article presents the methods and systems of rolling stock location and tracking using the Polish State Railways (PKP) as an example. The information on the equipment used for train positioning is not specified anywhere, hence they may differ, even for the same multiple units travelling in different parts of the country. In addition, the publication presents the progress of the European Train Control System (ETCS) implementation by the PKP.

Signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems are the primary source for Position, Navigation and Time (PNT) information onboard any vessel today. As these signals are prone to interference, a maritime backup system is needed to provide reliable PNT data, R(anging)-Mode is such a system. It utilizes existing maritime radio beacons or base stations of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) by adding ranging components to the legacy signals. The first modified radio beacons transmit medium frequency (MF) R-Mode signals in northern Germany. This paper has described the current state of the authors’ research and development activities at the receiver level for MF R-Mode signals. The receiver platform has been introduced, which was based on off-theshelf components and the implemented algorithms for distance estimation have been explained. Furthermore, the results of the first ranging measurements have been presented, which have shown the general suitability of the R-Mode technology as a source for maritime positioning and timing data.

Opis:
The idea of C/A codes GPS/GNSS Spoofing (Substitution), or the ability to mislead a satellite navigation receiver into establishing a position or time fix which is incorrect, has been gaining attention as spoofing has become more sophisticated. Various techniques have been proposed to detect if a receiver is being spoofed – with varying degrees of success and computational complexity. If the jammer signals are sufficiently plausible then the GNSS receiver may not realize it has been duped. There are various means of detecting spoofing activity and hence providing effective mitigation methods. In this paper, a novel signal processing method applicable to a single antenna handset receiver for spoofing detection has been described. Mathematical models and algorithms have been developed to solve the problems of satellite navigation safety. What has been considered in the paper is a spoofing detection algorithm based on the analysis of a civil satellite signal generated by mobile C/A GPS/GNSS single-antenna receivers. The work has also served to refine the civilian spoofing threat assessment by demonstrating the challenges involved in mounting a spoofing attack.

The article presents the solution for improvement of oil spill fighting with utilization of synthetic aperture radar. The way of identification is presented as well as the treatment of obtained data in order to eliminated “looks like” objects. Such system will widely improve the oil spill fighting at a very early stage of incident.
