RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The objective of the article is an analysis of the Epic of Gilgamesh from the perspective of political philosophy. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem undertaken in this article is the problem of human nature and its connection with political power in light of the Sumero-Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh. The article is based on an analysis of the source text (the Epic of Gilgamesh) in the English version by Andrew George, with the secondary literature also taken into consideration. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The point of departure is a justification of the subject undertaken here, with a reference to Leo Strauss’ political philosophy. Next, three key aspects of the subject matter are analyzed: the humanization of Enkidu, the search for immortality, and the conception of political power. RESEARCH RESULTS: The main result of the scientific analysis is the indication of themes concerning the significance and understanding of human nature and their relationship to the concept of political power that formed in Mesopotamia. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In the conclusions, the author indicates the unmistakable presence of a notion of human nature in Sumero-Akkadian reflection, as well as the connection between this notion of human nature and a paradigm of political power. The author also points to a religious aspect crucial for understanding these concepts.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is an analysis of Witold Gombrowicz’s position in reference to the archetype of Polish political culture. THE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODS: The main problem undertaken in the article is an analysis of Witold Gombrowicz’s position in reference to the question of Polishness, its components, and its relationship to Latin civilization. The article is based on an analysis of Gombrowicz’s Diary. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article begins with a synthetic outline of two fundamental issues: the Latinness of European civilization and the debate surrounding the archetype of Polish political culture. This is followed by what constitutes the main body of the article: an analysis of Gombrowicz’s views on Polishness. RESEARCH RESULTS: The most important result of the scientific analysis conducted here is the indication of the main theses of Gombrowicz’s understanding of Polishness and of the relationship between Polishness and Latin civilization. Gombrowicz’s conception is presented as an innovative approach to the problem, transcending traditional takes on Polishness as a specific type of realism. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In his conclusions, the author indicates interpretative possibilities resulting from the perspective taken in the article, as well as areas that require further study, concerning such issues as the relationship between the Sonland and the Fatherland, and the culture of the Polish nobility during the “Saxon Era.”

CEL NAUKOWY: Celem badań będzie przemyślenie na nowo relacji pomiędzy filozofią polityki a praktyką polityczną. Jako przesłanki w tych analizach zostaną wykorzystane poglądy Michaela Oakeshotta, Costicy Bradatana i Sokratesa. Można spróbować wskazać nowe kryterium odróżnienia tych dwóch obszarów, odwołując się częściowo do tradycji sceptycznej, akcentującej niedopowiedzenie i nieskrępowanie. PROBLEM i METODY BADAWCZE: Artykuł zawiera rozważania metafilozoficzne odnoszące się do obszaru filozofii polityki. Wykorzystane zostaną przede wszystkim metody filozoficzne stosowane na metapoziomie w stosunku do dociekań z zakresu filozofii polityki. PROCES WYWODU: Najpierw postaram się dookreślić frazę „filozofia polityki” i „filozofia polityczna”. W dalszej części wywodu przedstawię poglądy Oakeshotta i Bradatana dotyczące filozofii i polityki. Finalnie skontrastuję te ustalenia z wizerunkiem Sokratesa i ukażę pola synergii. WYNIKI ANALIZY NAUKOWEJ: Analizy z zakresu metafilozofii, w odniesieniu przede wszystkim do filozofii polityki, pozwolą dookreślić sam status refleksji filozoficznej i ograniczenia związane z próbami podania wyczerpującej ich definicji.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research is to rethink the relationship between political philosophy and political practice. The views of Michael Oakeshott, Costica Bradatan and Socrates will be used as premises in these analyses. A new criterion for distinguishing these two areas can be identified, partially referring to the tradition that emphasizes understatement and unrestrainedness. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The article contains metaphilosophical considerations related to the field of philosophy of politics. The primary methods used will be philosophical methods, applied at the meta level to inquiries in the field of political philosophy. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: First, I will try to define the phrases “philosophy of politics” and “political philosophy” in the Polish language. In the following part of the article, I will present the views of Oakeshott and Bradatan regarding philosophy and politics. Finally, I will contrast these findings with the image of Socrates and show the fields of synergy. RESEARCH RESULTS: These analyses in the field of metaphilosophy, in relation primarily to political philosophy, will allow us to define the very status of philosophical reflection and the limitations related to the attempts to provide an exhaustive definition. Based on a comparison of these concepts, other metaphilosophical problems arising from the challenges of political philosophy also emerge. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The research shows a need for a deeper analysis of metaphilosophical issues concerning political philosophy. Such research should deepen research in both philosophy and political science.

Opis:
In this article I will try to show to what extent the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli influenced the literary work of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro. It is worth mentioning that the political thought of the author of The Prince was widely known among the Polish intellectual elite in the 17th century. However, in the old Poland, the Florentine was increasingly criticized, as he was believed to promote a type of politics full of falsehood and cynicism. In his works, Fredro did not perceive Machiavelli in this way. He was referring to the ideas contained in two works – different in content – by the Florentine secretary: The Prince and Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius.

Opis:
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The paper seeks to clarify the political goals of promoting the “philosophy of peace” in post-war Poland under communist rule in order to assess its credibility for the present. PROBLEM AND RESEARCH METHODS: Contemporary academic textbooks devoted to the “philosophy of security” reproduce the interpretative patterns found in scientific analyzes of the “philosophy of peace” from the communist era. By proclaiming the unconditional priority of security for contemporary man, they provide no justification for this thesis. Using the contextualization method, what they consider universal is verified here by confronting the circumstances of the era in which it arose. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The paper reminds the most important conditions of Polish statehood subordinated to an external superpower after World War II. It discusses the possible social roles of scholars within the system of political repression. In this context, it analyzes the intellectual biography of the most important classic, to whom contemporary authors in the field of the philosophy of security refer. RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis proves the explicitly profiled social role of the classic within the system of state subordination and lack of national sovereignty. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The reproduction of interpretative patterns taken for granted from similar works should therefore be considered scientifically unreliable in the conditions of political and scientific freedom.

Opis:
“Arco trionfale” engraved by Giacomo Lauro in circa 1601–1603 is perhaps the most distinguishable period print associated with Jan Zamoyski (1542–1605), presenting an image of the Chancellor and Grand Hetman of the Crown. References to the print appeared in almost all studies dedicated to Polish modern art, in texts on the great Chancellor’s artistic patronage and in studies on art in the contexts of politics, propaganda and glorification. More often than not, an analysis of the concept was superficial, although the copperplate presents profound, though hitherto unrecognised content. Its highly erudite iconographic programme ought to be interpreted through the prism of ancient culture and the moral philosophy of Ciceronianism, Aristotelianism or the didactic and moral interpretation of Plato and Isocrates. We find in the print numerous motifs referring to moral civic education based on the rule of Stoic virtue, the need to exercise oneself in the service and defence of one’s homeland, the doctrine of “just war” as well as the ancient topos of pax et bellum. Readily apparent in the image, there are also elements of ethics, the science of the state and the Polish tradition of legal theory. The triumphal arch of Jan Zamoyski constitutes a parenetic mirror of his life and virtues as an “exemplary citizen” and an “ideal civil servant,” simply vir bonus.
