Opis:
The school readiness issues have been being in the focus of interests of the educators for years. The number of approaches, tendencies and dimensions of the school readiness indicates how comprehensive and complex this topic is. The analysis of the contemporary research directions based on the papers available in academic databases let arrange them into a few categories. They are all presented in the article with the aim to get the current perspective of the problem, especially in the social and emotional context. Some authors try to determine the list of the detailed aspects of emotional and social skills important to begin school education. The other approach presents the new school readiness tools. There is also a line that evaluates the early emotional support effect on school readiness. The next trend is formed by statistical meta-analyses on the correlation between the age of the school start and pupils achievements. The two new directions are related to the school readiness profiles and the idea to include the executive functions into school readiness assessment as an important aspect of pupils' emotional and social achievements. The results coming from those six directions help the educators to increase the early education care.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to analyze mathematical resilience from theoretical and practical perspectives. The paper is based on a review of the literature. Research on mathematics education has revealed a large proportion of students with math anxiety whose achievements in math are worsening. Such results encourage a discussion on preventing math anxiety. Research on the resilience of children and adolescents has accelerated in recent decades, resulting in the formulation of the concepts of school and mathematical resilience. The article presents the ecological model of mathematical resilience. The role of parents and teachers in promoting mathematical resilience is also described. The paper presents areas where students can self-foster mathematical resilience. The conclusions are related to the importance of strengthening mathematical resilience in education.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to identify the type of support that teachers provide to gifted students in grades 4–6 of primary schools in Poland in relation to their concepts of giftedness. Teachers’ understanding of the category of gifted students was analyzed: What do they find crucial in identifying gifted students? What areas of gifted students’ development are most important to them? Are there differences in the strategies for supporting gifted students between teachers who have different concepts of giftedness and who teach different subjects? The research was conducted on a group of 188 teachers using the standardized 20-item Balanced Development of Gifted Students Questionnaire. It helped identify the scope of the teachers’ activities in the cognitive, emotional/social, motivational, and creative spheres. It was shown that the dominant concept of giftedness among the surveyed teachers was cognitive and that their activities supporting gifted students were mainly aimed at mental development and knowledge acquisition. Support of the emotional/social sphere of gifted students was least frequently indicated by the respondents. There was consistency between the type of support provided and the teacher’s preferred concept of giftedness. There were significant differences in the definition of giftedness and the related type of support between teachers of different subjects. The subject which they taught also significantly differentiated the number of students identified as gifted: The most gifted students were identified by the art teachers, while the least were identified by the math teachers. The results may serve as guidelines for developing teachers’ competencies in working with gifted students by popularizing the concept of balanced development and making them aware of the links between beliefs about giftedness and the type of support provided.

Opis:
Nauczyciele przedszkoli wypełniali kwestionariusz ankiety podczas indywidualnych sesji.
The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of the preschool teachers with regard to dyslexia, ADHD and autism in relation to the requirements of working with children with SEN in an inclusive education system in Poland. Based on the review of the literature, research problems were formulated related to a) the knowledge level of teachers from rural and urban areas on the selected developmental disorders, and b) a comparison of the declared and actual knowledge on this subject in both groups. An original questionnaire, consisting of two parts, was used. Part A measured the declared knowledge (DK) by checking the teacher’s degree of compliance with the claims concerning terminology, causes, symptoms, treatment and availability of information on the 4-point Likert scale. Part B measured actual knowledge (AK) through the self-generation of information in these areas. The subjects were selected randomly from urban (n = 50) and rural (n = 50) areas. Teachers filled in questionnaires during individual sessions. The results show a satisfactory level of DK of the respondents from both groups about the assessed disorders. Statistically significant differences between groups occurred in DK related to ADHD. AK was satisfactory in both groups, though slightly lower than DK. Larger differences between DK and AK have occurred in the group of rural teachers, with them presenting a lower level of AK on autism. Satisfactory knowledge on the developmental disorders should be constantly upgraded by teachers from urban and rural areas in the context of their work with children with SEN on a daily basis.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the self-determination theory (SDT) in mathematics teaching methodology. In the experimental group, 62 fifth-graders had 10 months of maths lessons according to an original programme that prioritises three needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. The following research questions were formulated: How did students’ attitudes towards mathematics change under the influence of methodological interventions aimed at satisfying the three SDT needs? Did the methodological solutions contribute to better emotional/social competences in the students? Did the intervention result in higher maths achievement, measured by a maths knowledge and skills test and grades in the subject? The findings included statistically significant differences in 1) positive attitude towards mathematics (measured by the semantic differential technique), 2) emotional/social competences (measured by the KA scale from the tool called TROS-KA) and 3) mathematical achievements (measured by a maths test and grades in school) in comparison to the control group (N = 59), where less positive attitudes towards mathematics, lower maths grades and no significant increase in emotional/social competences were observed.
