Opis:
The successful development of shale gas requires a fundamental understanding of shales and that can be challenging because these rocks vary significantly. For recoverable shale gas resources assessment a broad range of geological, geochemical, geophysical and geomechanical data is required. Information about the variable lithologies, mineralogies, and kerogen content is vital to locate favorable intervals for gas production. Knowledge of the in-situ stresses and porosity of these intervals is essential for developing hydraulic fracturing strategies to recover the gas in place. Geomechanical properties of shales are important in terms of determination of the likelihood of fractures initiating and propagating in shale materials. Geomechanical properties of rock include: Poisson's Ratio, Total Minimum Horizontal Stress, Bulk, Young and Shear Modulus. These properties play significant role in developing shale assets. Having access to geomechanical data can assist engineers and geoscientists during geomechanical modeling, hydraulic fracture treatment design and in some cases during reservoir modeling in shale gas fields. This paper is intended to give characterization of geomechanical properties of shale rock. It then refers to a case study of Baltic Basin of shale gas in Poland, for discussing it geological condition and rock properties.

Opis:
In this paper, the possibility of replacing tensile extensometers with a non-contacting device for measuring elongation has been analyzed. An example of a non-contacting device is a Digital Image Correlation System (DIC). Such systems are widely used in various areas, for example, biology or modern engineering. DIC systems have several advantages that seem to be promising for testing modern materials. The most important is the fact that there is no physical contact between the sample and the DIC and therefore no additional force is applied during the experiment. On the other hand, a lack of contact with the sample can cause large measurement inaccuracies. Another advantage would be that a DIC can measure strain on the whole surface of the sample in all directions, instead of measuring part of the surface in one direction like in other extensometers. Because of these abilities, the environment impact on test bench (DIC + load device), and differences between conducted experiment with normalized tensile test needed to be investigated. The testing machine was replaced by a DIC system cooperating with a tension-compression module. The proposed method was used to monitor and record the images to determine the basic properties of 13MnSiCr7 grade steel. Twelve tests were performed. The analysis was done by comparing the values of mechanical properties obtained in a static tensile test, such as yield strength, tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation of the material; with the values of these properties determined experimentally. For each sample, stress-strain curves were evaluated. To check if the results were correct, a Q-Dixon test was performed in each case, confidence intervals were also calculated. Finally, the obtained properties were compared with those from the standard tensile test acquired from the manufacturer’s material card.

Opis:
W celu wykrycia różnic w zachowaniu się skał w polu naprężeń rozciągających i ściskających przeprowadzono najpierw próby jednoosiowego ściskania, a później - rozciągania smukłych walcowych próbek trzech quasi-jednorodnych skał: piaskowców Brenna i Jastrzębie oraz granitu Strzelin. Próby rozciągania były próbami monocyklicznymi oraz wielocyklicznymi.
Cylindrical specimens of Brenna and Jastrzębie sandstones and Strzelin granite were tested under the monotonic compression and the monotonic and the cyclic uniaxial tension. The curves of the axial stress versus the axial, lateral and volumetric strains show the differences of the behavior of rocks under uniaxial tension and compression conditions. The strain-stress characteristics of rocks under uniaxial tension exhibited non-linearity. The average volumetric strain increased with the increase in the axial strain and in the tensile loads. The results indicated that the Poisson's ratio as well the tangent and the secant moduli decreased with the increase in the tensile loads. When the rocks were subjected to load cycles in the uniaxial tension some residual axial, lateral and volumetric strains remained after unloading. According to the experimental results, the conclusion of a diametrically different behavior of rocks under the tension conditions vs. compression was given.
