Opis:
Existing solutions to the problem of finding valuable information on the Web suffers from several limitations like simplified query languages, out-of-date in- formation or arbitrary results sorting. In this paper a different approach to this problem is described. It is based on the idea of distributed processing of Web pages content. To provide sufficient performance, the idea of browser-based volunteer computing is utilized, which requires the implementation of text processing algorithms in JavaScript. In this paper the architecture of Web pages content analysis system is presented, details concerning the implementation of the system and the text processing algorithms are described and test results are provided.

Crawling systems available on the market are usually closed solutions dedicated to performing a particular kind of task. There is a meaningful group of users, however, which require an all–in–one studio, not only for executing and running Internet robots, but also for (graphical) (re)defining and (re)composing crawlers according to dynamically changing requirements and use–cases. The Cassiopeia framework addresses the above idea. The crucial aspect regarding its efficiency and scalability is concurrency model applied. One of the promising models is staged event–driven architecture providing some useful benefits, such as splitting an application into separate stages connected by events’ queues–which is interesting, taking into account Cassiopeia’s assumptions regarding crawler (re)composition. The goal of this paper is to present the idea and PoC implementation of the Cassiopeia framework, with special attention paid to its crucial architectural element; i.e., design, implementation, and application of staged event–driven architecture.

Opis:
Cognitive models of web navigation have been used for evaluating websites and predicting user navigation behavior. Currently they predict the correct hyperlink by using information from the hyperlink text alone and ignore all other textual information on a webpage. The validity of this assumption is examined by investigating the role of non-hyperlink text on user navigation behavior. In the first experiment, we created two versions of a website by removing the non-hyperlink text from it. We found that there was no significant effect of non-hyperlink text on the user navigation behavior. Participants were equally accurate, selected the same set of pages to visit and spent the same amount of time on that common set with or without non-hyperlink text. This result validates the assumptions of those models of user-navigation behavior that consider information from the hyperlink text only. However, in a followup experiment, we included high-relevance and low-relevance pictures on the website, and repeated the experiment with and without non-hyperlink text. We found that participants were more accurate in the presence of non-hyperlink text than without it. This result suggests that the presence of pictures might prime the users to pay attention to non-hyperlink text, which increases the task accuracy.

Meeting the educational needs of students currently requires moving toward collaborative electronic and mobile learning systems that parallel the vision of Web 2.0. However, factors such as data freedom, brokerage, interconnectivity and the Internet of Things add to a vision for Web 3.0 that will require consideration in the development of future campus-based, distance and vocational study. So, education can, in future, be expected to require deeper technological connections between students and learning environments, based on significant use of sensors, mobile devices, cloud computing and rich-media visualization. Therefore, we discuss challenges associated with such a futuristic campus context, including how learning materials and environments may be enriched by it. As an additional novel element the potential for much of that enrichment to be realized through development by students, within the curriculum, is also considered. We will conclude that much of the technology required to embrace the vision of Web 3.0 in education already exists, but that further research in key areas is required for the concept to achieve its full potential.

This paper demonstrates how the combination of simulation and real-world experiments can be used to aid decisions concerning the performance of a distributed application. It presents a case study of performance analysis carried out for a commercial application implementing a web-based API server for mobile clients. The application was deployed on the Heroku cloud-based Platform as a Service (PaaS). The analysis described in this paper provided information required to choose the proper configuration of resources for the software. Simulation was used in the research to identify factors crucial to the performance of the application. This allowed for the preparation of basic experiments concentrating on these factors. Consequently, the basic parameters of resources crucial for the efficiency of the application could be benchmarked at insignificant cost and effort. This approach allows us to reliably aid decisions concerning resource configuration for an analyzed application. The simulation method used in this research is based on the formalism of Timed Colored Petri Nets, but the complexity of formal modeling is hidden from its users. Application developers are able to conveniently create a high-level model of their designs and perform simulations, while the reliability of the results is ensured by the formalism. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the simulation method for analyzing real-world distributed systems.

The increasing availability and popularity of computer systems has resulted in a demand for new language- and platform-independent ways of data exchange. This demand has, in turn, led to significant growth in the importance of systems based on Web services. Alongside the growing number of systems accessible via Web services came the need for specialized data repositories that could offer effective means of searching the available services. The development of mobile systems and wireless data transmission technologies has allowed us to use distributed devices and computer systems on a greater scale. The accelerating growth of distributed systems might be a good reason to consider the development of distributed Web service repositories with built-in mechanisms for data migration and synchronization.

In a modern globalised world, military and peace keeping forces often face situations which require very subtle and well planned operations taking into account cultural and social aspects of a given region and its population as well as dynamic psychological awareness related to recent events which can have impact on the attitude of the civilians. The goal of the EUSAS project is to develop a prototype of a system enabling mission planning support and training capabilities for soldiers and police forces dealing with asymmetric threat situations, such as crowd control in urban territory. In this paper, we discuss the data-farming infrastructure developed for this project, allowing generation of large amount of data from agent based simulations for further analysis allowing soldier training and evaluation of possible outcomes of different rules of engagement.

Wejście w życie dyrektywy INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) przyczyniło się do stopniowego tworzenia infrastruktur danych przestrzennych w krajach Unii Europejskiej. Ustawa o infrastrukturze informacji przestrzennej narzuca wobec samorządu lokalnego wymaganie tworzenia i udostępniania danych przestrzennych. Rezultatem dyrektywy INSPIRE w polskim prawodawstwie jest przyjęcie przez rząd polski ustawy z dnia 4 marca 2010 r. o infrastrukturze informacji przestrzennej. Ustawa ta zawiera zasady tworzenia i wykorzystania infrastruktury danych przestrzennych. Praca omawia wybrane regulacje prawne i przepisy administracyjne związane z prowadzeniem geoportali gminnych.
The entry into force of the INSPIRE Directive (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe) has contributed to the progressive building of spatial data infrastructures in the countries of the European Union. Laws on spatial information infrastructure require local government to create and share spatial data. The result of the INSPIRE Directive in Polish legislation is the adoption of the law of March 4, 2010, about spatial information infrastructure by the Polish Government. This act contained the principles of creation and use of spatial data infrastructure. The presented work consists of selected legal regulations and administrative provisions relating to the conduct of a municipality’s geoportals. As an example, the geoportal prepared for the Tomice municipality has been presented. To prepare the thematic layers, QGIS software based on the Open Source License was used. Several thematic layers were prepared based on the data made available by the municipality, the data obtained from a national geoportal (www.geoportal.gov.pl), and the General Directorate for Environmental Protection as well as materials developed during the many years of cooperation with the municipality. The process of portal assumptions was made on the basis of Geoxa software. Geoportals can be regarded as tools that are valuable sources of information for various consumers – from the government to individual users. They allow for quick and transparent access to diverse spatial data at the same time based on detailed and reliable sources.

In this paper, we describe our work in progress in the scope of web-scale information extraction and information retrieval utilizing distributed computing. We present a distributed architecture built on top of the MapReduce paradigm for information retrieval, information processing and intelligent search supported by spatial capabilities. Proposed architecture is focused on crawling documents in several different formats, information extraction, lightweight semantic annotation of the extracted information, indexing of extracted information and finally on indexing of documents based on the geo-spatial information found in a document. We demonstrate the architecture on two use cases, where the first is search in job offers retrieved from the LinkedIn portal and the second is search in BBC news feeds and discuss several problems we had to face during the implemen-tation. We also discuss spatial search applications for both cases because both LinkedIn job offer pages and BBC news feeds contain a lot of spatial information to extract and process.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to the aggregation of monadic ratings (5-step scale) done by crowdsourcing users for the evaluation of medical websites. We compare them pairwise with other evaluations done by the same users for other websites (whether they are higher or lower), and we will use an Elo rating algorithm to calculate website “credibility” values. Results show that this method of crowdsourcing evaluation is highly correlated with expert evaluations. As proposed, a competition-based model uses a 5-step scale as ordinal and only compares which website is rated higher or lower by the same user. This approach can solve many problems associated with a 5-point scale, such as different understanding by users, user bias, and distribution skewness that can be clearly observed in results.

While assessing the credibility of the presented pages, respondents of the Reconcile studies were also asked to justify their ratings in writing. This work attempts to give an insight into the factors that affected the credibility assessment. To the best of our knowledge, the presented study is the most-recent large-scale study of its kind carried out since 2003, when the Fogg et al. śHow do users evaluate the credibility of Web sites? A study with over 2,500 participants’ paper was published. The performed analysis shows that the findings made a decade ago are still mostly valid today despite the passage of time and the advancement of Internet technologies. However we report a weaker impact of webpage appearance. A much bigger dataset (as compared to Fogg’s studies) allowed respondents to reveal additional features, which influenced the credibility evaluations.

This paper describes JupyQgis – a new Python library for Jupyteo IDE enabling interoperability with the QGIS system. Jupyteo is an online integrated development environment for earth observation data processing and is available on a cloud platform. It is targeted at remote sensing experts, scientists and users who can develop the Jupyter notebook by reusing embedded open-source tools, WPS interfaces and existing notebooks. In recent years, there has been an increasing popularity of data science methods that have become the focus of many organizations. Many scientific disciplines are facing a significant transformation due to data-driven solutions. This is especially true of geodesy, environmental sciences, and Earth sciences, where large data sets, such as Earth observation satellite data (EO data) and GIS data are used. The previous experience in using Jupyteo, both among the users of this platform and its creators, indicates the need to supplement its functionality with GIS analytical tools. This study analyzed the most efficient way to combine the functionality of the QGIS system with the functionality of the Jupyteo platform in one tool. It was found that the most suitable solution is to create a custom library providing an API for collaboration between both environments. The resulting library makes the work much easier and simplifies the source code of the created Python scripts. The functionality of the developed solution was illustrated with a test use case.

In the mining industry there is a lack of good standards of creating the mining maps. Such documents are usually issued by non-free software for commercial purposes. Main aim of this article is to analyze the possibilities free and open standards for style spatial data, in according to Polish law and norms. Achieving this goal was possible because of system using Web Services, also based on open software and standards. This article presents installation and configuration of a geospatial service system based on free and open source software: GeoServer, PostGIS and OpenLayers. The sample vector mine data were converted and saved in the spatial database PostGIS and then they were published by using geodata server GeoServer as Web Map Service. Next there were created the portrayal styles of the mining maps elements. The main aim was the adaptation to Polish PKN norms: Mapy górnicze. Umowne znaki granic (Mining maps. Conventional symbols of borders) and Umowne znaki podziemnych wyrobisk górniczych (Conventional symbols of underground excavations). For these styles there were used SLD and SVG OGC standards. Last step was connected with creation of geospatial web services client using OpenLayers. It allowed to display maps just in web browser.
