Opis:
The Voltage flicker, a phenomenon of annoying light intensity fluctuation, caused by rapid change in industrial and domestic load such as Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), rolling mills, welding equipments and pumps operating periodically has been a major concern for supply utilities, electricity regulatory agencies and customers. Static Voltage Compensators (SVC's) and Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) have been able to solve the voltage flicker problem by rapidly controlling the reactive power. But, the control of active power along with reactive power control helps to mitigate the voltage flicker problem more effectively. In this paper, voltage flicker mitigation of EAF with STATCOM along with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is presented and performance results of the system using PSCAD/EMTDC software are analyzed.

Opis:
The electricity is a basic need for functioning of modern society. In the deregulated electricity market, delivering quality power to the clients is a challenge for the utilities. In this paper, a "hybrid grid" is discussed that consists of centralized generations and localized distributed generations which may be comprised of small-scale conventional and sustainable sources. Energy storage option is also integrated in the hybrid-grid. Simulations are done on a test network, using "Power-Factory" software. It was found from the analysis that voltage quality and power supply availability of a hybrid-grid can be improved by proper selection of energy storage system along with protective and control devices.

Opis:
The wind power which has been expected to be a promising alternative energy source can bring new challenges when it is connected to the power grid due to the fluctuation nature of the wind and the comparatively new types of its generators. This paper illustrates a possible solution to mitigate these integration issues of the wind power by application of the energy storage to the wind farm in power systems focusing on its short-duration perspective. The simulation model for the Energy Storage System (ESS) connected to the wind farm is implemented using the Power System Simulator for Engineering(PSS/E) which is one of the most widely used program for the power system analysis in US. Employing a sample power system, the control effect of the ESS for mitigating the wind generation related power quality issues by suppressing the power flow fluctuation of the wind farm, and improving power system stability is validated. The counteracting effect of the ESS in the wind farm to the disturbance on the grid is also shown.

Opis:
Supercapacitors are the devices which can be store significant amounts of energy and quickly release it, their main application is for short term power compensation application where they can release a large amount of energy quickly and then can he recharged with smaller current. In this paper the use of Supercapacitors bank is explored for energy stabilisation and maintaining the voltage profile of the distribution system at the load point. The proposed supercapacitor bank is designed to improve the voltage profile of a distribution system by supplying the energy in case of demand and recharging the Supercapacitors bank in valley period. The designed bank is of 50 k\Vh{180 MJ) of energy, 440 V voltages and peak power of 30 kVV capacities for supply of energy in case of instantaneous need. The result shows that the SCESS can supply the instantaneous power for the back up the loads even though the voltage may drop up to 100 V; this SCESS can back up the load from 1.60-9.9974 hours depending upon the power demand while maintaining the minimum discharge voltage ratio and availability of useful energy.

Opis:
The development and advancement in storage technologies and custom power devices technologies are making the application of supercapacitors energy storage system a potentially viable solution for modern power distribution system application, permitting the system to be operated in more flexible and controllable manner. The supercapacitors energy storage system considered is supposed primarily for limiting the monthly subscribed demand levels, energy cost saving, for supply of energy in case of instantaneous need and long duration back up purpose. This paper presents the development of techno-economical multi-objective function for SCESS implemented in distribution system considering the constraints and their impact on optimization of net present value.

Opis:
Paper presents hybrid on-line UPS system (H-UPS). Presented system is based on a on-line (double conversion) UPS. H-UPS consists of two controlled energy storage systems. The first one is a static energy storage system based on supercapacitor bank. The second energy source is adjustable speed generating system supplying DC link voltage. A control concept of the UPS operation, according short and long failure of the supply utility voltage is developed. The 5 kW H-UPS is designed, built and tested. The control unit is built using DS P processor based on Shark from Analog Devices. The design and system stability tuning is achieved using PSIM software. Laboratory tests confirm high quality of the produced AC voltage during transients (voltage failure) and during steady state operation without external supply voltage.
