Opis:
The article is dedicated to the category of purpose as a criterion for distinguishing literary types and kinds in early 19th-century Polish poetics. The author discusses this topic on the basis of treatises (by E. Słowacki, J.F. Królikowski, and J. Korzeniowski) which apply a two-tier division of poetry into types and genres. She analyses three issues: distinguishing didactic poetry as a type of literature; the general criteria for literary typology; and the distinction between poetry and rhetoric. As a point of reference, the author refers to the claims and ideas of S. Skwarczyńska, whose diagnosis concerning the ‘popular poetics’ of the period between the two world wars confirms the durability of classicistic genological categories. Paper presented as a part of Project no 2017/27/N/HS2/00395 “In Search of the Language. The Birth of Polish Literary Studies in the Context of European Ideological Changes (1795–1830)” funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.

Opis:
The article is focused on the phenomenon of dialogicality in the letter, which is first discussed in the light of the existing theories (proposed by Stefania Skwarczyńska or Brigitte Diaz) and extended with new aspects of the definition of the letter, proposed in the New Theory of the Letter [Nowa teoria listu] by Anita Całek. In the next part, for the analysis of the dialogical nature of epistolography, a new research perspective is proposed: the dialogical self theory, whose creator and promoter is, above all, Hubert J.M. Hermans. The researcher, inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept on a polyphonic novel, pointed out how important the phenomenon of internal dialogues with oneself is for identity. The self can be perceived as a multivoiced structure of meanings: every voice is with a relatively autonomous I-position engaging in internal dialogues. This concept is combined and developed in Poland by Małgorzata Puchalska-Wasyl and Piotr K. Oleś, with the communicative approach of Friedemann Schulz von Thun, who proposed a model of the “internal team” containing internalized roles that an individual is able to assume by conducting internal dialogues. Both concepts are used for epistolographic analysis, seeing in the letter a medium of such dialogicality: the sender simultaneously plays his own role and creates in the imagination the figure of the recipient — which is actually the inner voice of his own self — a dialogue with her in the letter. This imaginary conversation is possible because the subject produces two dialogue voices, gives them autonomy, and for the needs of a specific correspondent, creates a epistolary character who represents him in this epistolary conversation. The indicated mechanism, which has its psychological justification in the theory of dialogic self and communicative psychology, allows to explain changes in the subject’s self-image in categories other than those used so far (such as self-presentation or self-creation).

Opis:
Two controversial women, a German and a Pole, are presented in this comparative study. Käthe Schirmacher and Stefania Laudyn-Chrzanowska were radical women’s rights advocates who became passionate nationalists. The article is an attempt at interpreting their lives and writings as a kind of self-narration and at the same time a narration of community (identity). As Carolyn Heilbrun puts it, a woman can write her life by telling it in an autobiography, she can write it as a fictional narrative or write it “in advance by living it”. Therefore, the paper focuses on both texts and (real) lives. Moreover, individual identity continuously intersects with group identity in the biographies and narrations displayed here. For Schirmacher and Laudyn narrating the self often means narrating community: either narrating the imagined women’s community or narrating the nation. Hence both authors challenge the model of an autonomous individual narrating a single life. A further point of departure is the relationship between identity and interaction with other languages or national groups. It is not entirely coincidental that Schirmacher and Laudyn developed strongly nationalistic and anti-Semitic attitudes after having lived abroad for a long period of time. The first few years were marked by a deep belief in supra- -national women’s organizations and women’s solidarity. Then a kind of “political solstice” took place (Schirmacher). Obviously, the radical change of views was due to a number of factors but the everyday confrontation with “the other” intensified the awareness of cultural boundaries and resulted in the sacralization of their own respective nations. The paper offers thus a double portrait of both activists as feminists and nationalists, and also, more or less deliberately, chronists of two different, though intertwined, ‘imagined communities’.
