The aim of the article is to compare two ways of introducing the poetics of reportage in biographical writing, using the method of comparative biography, described by Richard Holmes. The author compares two biographies of Jan Rodowicz “Anoda” by Barbara Wachowicz and Piotr Lipiński in aspects like: the use of the poetics of reportage, the selection of archival materials and the approach to it. As a result, she describes two ways a poetics of reportage can be introduced in biographical writing. The first one is described using the example of the book by Barbara Wachowicz, in which a portrait of a national hero is being constructed with archival materials provided by his own family and statements made by the members of the anti- system memory community, that were responsible for keeping the memory of the Warsaw Uprising and the post-war lives of its participants undisturbed by the state’s propaganda. The second one is represented in a book by Piotr Lipiński that uses the biography of “Anoda” to deal with the problem of transitional justice as an unfulfilled dream of Polish society. From this comparison a conclusion can be drawn that there are many ways that biographers can introduce the poetics of reportage in their writing, depending on their aims and the role they want to play in their books.

The aim of this article is to present one of the varieties of biography, here tentatively defined as lunar biography. The specificity of this subgenre is relativity understood as a feature that shapes the way the characters — here the protagonist — are presented, consisting of the fact that the person is described as if the story about him or her was reflected in countless mirrors, or was possible only due to agency, that is, stories told about others. Kowalska. Ta od Dąbrowskiej by Sylwia Chwedorczuk is the subject of those multiple reflections. The characterization of this biographical text, on the one hand aims at presenting a detailed portrait of the author of Safona, and on the other hand, indicates how strongly it is linked to her relationships with others. Portraying Kowalska was conducted to better analyse the play between facts, opinions, or the peculiar paucity of Kowalska’s own voice. An empathetic biographer, trying to depict the individualism of her chosen heroine, often forgets that too much contextual information blurs the individuality of the writer from Lviv, and leads to situating her too strongly in the perspective of references to others. It results in in her story being hidden in stories of persons close to her, which may cause the loss of her individuality, or at least, it reveals Kowalska through a sum of biographies which do not belong to her.

This article shows an influence of Martin Luther’s understanding of ethics on the ideas concerning these matters presented by Jerzy Pilch — a contemporary Polish writer. Ethical questions and the reflections connected with them are one of the main subjects of his considerations in Dzienniki [Diaries] (2012, 2014). In his approach towards ethical problems you can see on the one hand an individual attitude, which was called by Luther “freedom from” or practical life for God, and on the other hand — a sociable attitude or “freedom to” displayed in a disposition of living for others. Everything that is concerned with morality in Pilch’s diaries, their author comments carrying out a dialogue with Lutheran tradition and provoking its adherents of Lutheranism. These, mainly ironical statements, should nonetheless be treated as the testimony of his inner struggle with the Protestant tradition and the resulting vision of the world. Katarzyna Kubisiowska, in her monograph dedicated to Pilch, puts the reader gently to this track. However, to arrive at the core of envoi of the author of Diaries, it is necessary to employ the work of a scholar, who would be able to combine three skills in his research: literary, theological and ethical.

The article dispels the myth that the Reformation caused interest in the Bible through critical activity of Martin Luther. The humanism of the 15th century, in the first stage of the Renaissance, through the works of Jan Gerson, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Thomas Morus, Laurentino Vall, focused interest on the Bible philosophical study, and on popularizing it in national languages. The golden era of the Polish Bible is constituted by publishing the New Testament translated by Stanisław Murzynowski in 1553, issuing the Leopolita’s Bible — the first Polish Bible translated by Jan Nicz Leopolita for the Catholic Church in 1561, editing the Jakub Wujek Bible in 1599 for Jesuits and the Gdańsk Bible in 1632, translated by Daniel Mikołajewski.

The starting point of these considerations in the form of a case study are two issues: intermediality as a distinguishing mark of contemporary hybrid art forms and numerous references to famous films in the latest Polish theatre. The article concerns the performance Between the mouth and the edge of the cup (directed by Remigiusz Brzyk, Zagłębie Theatre in Sosnowiec, 17.05.2019). This performance, inspired by the biography of Maria Rodziewiczówna, is an example of the corelation of various media and an autothematic show whose theme is the writer's biography, popular novel, film and their reception.

This paper is an analysis of four of Wiktor Woroszylski’s biographical books in terms of the narrative strategies adopted in each of these biographies. The books taken into consideration are: Sny pod śniegiem (about the life of Michaił Sałtykow-Szczedrin), Życie Majakowskiego, Życie Sergiusza Jesienina (co-written with Elwira Watała) and Kto zabił Puszkina. Narration is recognized as the main category of biography, which responds with the text construction, author’s perspective, presentation of the hero, and the introducion of minor narratives (statements, dialogues, quotes). Additionally, narration is also the figure of understanding. On the one hand, it is connected with seeking the truth about another person, on the other hand, it could be also an attempt at the biographer’s self-understanding. Woroszylski uses such narrative strategies as incarnation, lighting, explanation and researcher-interpreter strategy. They present four ways of telling about the fate of the hero. They also show a different understanding of biography as a genre and the role of the biographer’s self. However, the analysis undertaken in this article is not intended to validate these strategies in terms of adherence to the principles that are crucial to a biography. Demonstrating differences and similarities between strategies reveals constant tendencies that are evident in Woroszylski’s biographical attempts. Moreover, it shows the author’s understanding of the genre. This paper tries to answer the question why the author repeatedly (not only in the mentioned books) returned to the issue of a Russian writer’s fate. What is also important is that each biography must be treated as an “unfulfilled project”. It emerges from the considerations that biography itself is a piece of work that cannot be separated from its author. It is included in the biography of the biographer, too. It means that the biography is a subject of reformulations affecting its construction, depending on the historical or political situation.

Inspired by Clifford Geertz’s concept, the author analyses blurred genres on the example of biographies, focusing on their contemporary transformations, while scrutinizing their formal, methodological and audience-related (possible reasons behind their popularity) aspects. The ethical dimension of the biographer’s work is crucial, and here it is examined from the perspective of the writer’s personal involvement and the emotional community of readers (as defined by Barbara Rosenwein). The study also analyses biographies when they are perceived as a type of testimony, experience, an act of creating potential histories, or as critical works. From this perspective, writing a biography is like inciting comprehension by re-evaluating the meaning of somebody’s experiences and engaging them with the modern readers’ experience. In all probability, the key is not the authenticity of the presented reality, but enabling the reader to immerse themselves in the flow of the story so that reading the book becomes a significant experience in itself. What the reader seems to require is for the devices that are typical for novel-like narration to be combined with nonfictional forms. Thus, genre blurring is, in fact, a basis for renegotiating the pact between authors and readers, where both sides are well aware of how ambiguous it is to write about an absent third party, realizing that it is necessary to omit facts, be concise, make sense of convoluted events, and to extract the essence in things that seemingly look chaotic.

The article is devoted to Bruno Schulz’s meetings with musicians. It shows not only a partial biography of the author of The Cinnamon Shops, filtered by these encounters, but also smaller fragments of lives of his friends. These intersected biographies create a story about inter-war contacts and relationships, which resulted in numerous epistolography and post-war memories that focused on Schulz’s life and oeuvre. The author of this text talks about the influence that these contacts might have had on Schulz’s perception of music and musicians. Furthermore, it shows how he translated these experiences into his prose. In the archive of Schulz’s life and work we can find traces of meetings with several music artists. There are also some traces of these meetings in the descriptions of organ grinders at Sanatorium Under The Sign of The Hourglass, Jewish musicians who we will find concerts in the story Spring, as well as in the descriptions of park and cafe musicians, mentioned in both series of stories. However, knowledge of these relationships survived primarily due to the letters. It should be noted that the preserved materials from his meetings with musicians have never been the subject of schulzology research in its entirety. Musicians inspired a few fragments of Schulz’s short stories. Artists whom he met at the beginning of the 20th century were not only performers of pre-war Poland, in particular his hometown of Drohobych, and Lviv, Warsaw, but also of Vienna and Paris. These friendships were important for his musical education, they shaped his thinking about music and his image of musicians. They must have had an impact on the descriptions of sounds in the world depicted in The Cinnamon Shops and his other stories, and finally — after the Holocaust — they let the legacy of Bruno Schulz be saved.

This article seeks to examine (auto)biographical plays. Texts and performances inspired by biographical material form a significant part of contemporary dramaturgy and theatrical projects. In Poland, this type of activity is the domain of directors coming from different generations and representing various styles, for example, Krystian Lupa, Maciej Wojtyszko, Wiktor Rubin, Michał Buszewicz, Weronika Szczawińska. Both dramatic texts and stage performances inspired by (auto)biography are non-uniform messages with updates of various genre forms. They may thus be classified as “blurred genres.” Two plays (An Autobiography Just in Case by Michał Buszewicz and Simply by Weronika Szczawińska) shown online during the Divine Comedy theatrical festival in Krakow in 2020 were used to analyze the diverse genre features of stage statements (characteristic of, among other things, intimate journal, autobiography, performance or theatre of fact) and the phenomenon of media mediation of theatrical performances made available to the audience via the streaming platform. The form of the theatrical texts is of great importance in the staging process. Regardless of whether they are autonomous dramatic texts that exist prior to their performance or scripts written specifically for the needs of a given theater project, their dramatic model contributes substantially to the aesthetics of the spectacle. In specific stage productions, these texts — due to their performative properties — combine other stage matter in a coherent manner, thus creating an important tool for representing (auto)biography and an instrument for engaging the audience.

W artykule zostały omówione dwie kwestie. Po pierwsze, przedstawiono cechy łódzkiej szkoły metodologicznej, które świadczą o tym, że tę grupę skupionych wokół Jana Lutyńskiego i Zygmunta Gostkowskiego oraz współpracujących ze sobą socjologów można uznać za szkołę naukową. W tym celu prześledzono, które z cech definicyjnych charakteryzujących szkoły naukowe (czyli posiadanie genealogii, czasu, miejsca, samoświadomości, wspólnoty poglądów (rdzeń ideowy, rdzeń metodologiczny) oraz pism, stylu i światopoglądu) przynależą łódzkiej szkole metodologicznej. Wykazano, że opisywana w artykule grupa badaczy–metodologów większość tych cech posiada. W drugiej części artykułu poddano analizie proces zdobywania oraz status zgromadzanych materiałów, które posłużą do napisania biografii tej szkoły naukowej. Zaprezentowano szereg problemów epistemologicznych, metodologicznych i etycznych napotykanych przez socjologów chcących zajmować się pisaniem biografii swojego środowiska naukowego, innych badaczy, ważnych uczonych, mistrzów. Przeanalizowano status zastanych i wywołanych źródeł informacji o łódzkiej szkole metodologicznej, rolę, miejsce i wpływ socjologa–biografa oraz jego „powinności” w stosunku do biografowanych, informatorów dostarczających materiałów, jak i do czytelników – odbiorców biografii.
This paper discusses two related issues. Firstly, the attributes of the Lodz methodological school are presented, which confirm that the group of cooperating scientists who gathered around Zygmunt Gostkowski and Jan Lutyński could be considered a scientific school. In the course of the paper definitional features of scientific schools (genealogy, time, place, self-awareness, unity of general views, i.e. core ideas and core methodology, and papers, style and world view) characterizing the Lodz methodological school are discussed, and it is proved that the group of researchers-methodologists discussed are endowed with the majority of those features. The second part of the article analyzes the process and status of collected materials which will serve as the basis for writing a biography of this scientific school. It examines a range of epistemological, methodological and ethical dilemmas encountered by sociologists who intend to write a biography of their scientific community, other scientists, influential academics, and masters. It also analyzes the status of existing and generated sources of information concerning the Lodz methodological school; the role, place and impact of the sociologist-biographer and their obligations towards the heroes under consideration, informers providing materials, as well as readers – receivers of the biography.

The article discusses the concept of Olga Tokarczuk’s “tender narrator”, which was demonstrated in her Nobel speech, and developed in a book entitled “Tender Narrator” (Tokarczuk 2020). The writer’s proposed way of describing the narrative and narrator was used to examine the concept of the biographical narrator, his bond with a hero, the truth and the fiction in the biography, the process of discovering and finding a purpose to existence. Olga Tokarczuk’s idea was discussed in the context of other useful theories aimed at the search for meaning: a reference to the concept of the course of life of Charlotte Bühler (1933/1999) and the will to make sense of Viktor E. Frankl (1948/2018, 1982/2017, 1988/2018, 1992/2018) allowed us to see a common ground for reflection on the role and specificity of biographical narrative. On the one hand, Agata Bielik-Robson’s concept (2004) on the trauma of the present highlighted the need for retrospective life storytelling and its therapeutic, reparative nature. On the other hand, the personalistic norm (in its original sense proposed by Karol Wojtyła in “Love and Responsibility” of 1986), according to which the only appropriate way to refer to a person is love, turned out to be close to the model of “tender narrator”. The extensive conceptualization of that idea, proposed by Olga Tokarczuk, compared to the concept of biographical narrator and the concepts mentioned above, allows for a reconsideration of the important issues discussed earlier: the “tender narrator” model turned out to be inspiring for attempts to rethink the adequacy of biographical representation, the objectivity vs. involvement of a biographer, and the relationship between biography and literature.

The article addresses the issue of generic and cognitive attractiveness of a monograph based on the work of Marietta Chudakova entitled, Mikhail Bulgakov: The Life and Times, which was published with a more than thirty years delay. The main purpose of the sketch is the reflection on the biography author’s research project, the methodology, the connection between the research sources and the writing strategy to which the structure of this article is devoted. The introduction of the article describes how the author realized the proposed honesty and authenticity while adopting a certain research method that is perceived ethically. The next part of the article focuses on the implemented methods which are mainly used in the fields of history and literary studies while using certain sources such as archives and witness accounts that are not accessible for modern researchers. The last part of the article concentrates on the influence of “me” as an author on the way the narrative of the biography is conducted. The analysis of the given problems allowed the results of a particular research work to be seen. It also showed how a documental biography may be still attractive to a reader despite the changes in reception.

The main issue of this article is primarily the paratextual comments by Marguerite Yourcenar made about her novel Memoirs of Hadrian. Paradoxically — despite all the objections of the author against recognising the text in terms of apocrypha (defined as a strong hoax / forgery) — the remarks confirm the diagnosis of the apocryphal character of the novel in another sense. Those self-commentaries, which relate to efforts to uphold ancient realities and build the illusion behind the authenticity of the autobiography of the emperor, support the idea and such understanding of apocrypha, which fully utilizes the potential genre intertext, or biblical apocrypha. The apocryphal character of Memoirs of Hadrian and other literary quasi-autobiographical fictions are not false attributions in which the role of the author is to play real historical persons, determine mimetic convention of a narrative, re-narration and re-focalization and related to them is the supplementation of biographical or (possibly) autobiographical intertextuality.

The article briefly confronts different research perspectives on epistolography. The fundamental Teoria listu (Theory of a Letter) by Stefania Skwarczyńska is indicated as an important reference for many concepts. The category of a beautiful letter proposed by Skwarczyńska is presented by the example of the correspondence between Wisława Szymborska and Kornel Filipowicz — Listy. Najlepiej w życiu ma twój kot (Letters. Your Cat Has the Best in Life). The letters of the future Nobel Prize winner and the master of the storyteller harmoniously combine life and literary elements. They are characterised by irony and humour, which are specific codes of communication. Their form and concepts are evidence of the correspondents’ passionate and strong relationship. The sensitivity to nature shown in them was presented in the context of empathetic imagination. It was linked to both Filipowicz’s biographical experiences and his creative practices, threads that help in the origin of texts such as the short story Krajobraz doskonały (Perfect Landscape) from the volume Śmierć mojego antagonisty (Death of My Antagonist). Nowadays, the need for interdisciplinarity has been pointed out as one of the most important postulates concerning the study of epistolography. The bilateral nature of biography and correspondence continues to be an inspiring issue. The communication paradox of the letter, which is both a dialogue and a monologue, also returns in the investigations of researchers. In the context of the aforementioned studies, the letter continues to fascinate as a phenomenon on the borderline of life and art. For some artists, the letter had a community- creating power. This very meaning was especially emphasised in the perspective of searching for spiritual community, tightening important bonds, lasting and deep friendships based on certain rules. Volumes of correspondence of writers-friends, among others, Julian Tuwim, were cited as an example. The article is an invitation to develop and expand the study of both published correspondence, as well as letters resting in archives in Poland and abroad.

What factors determine artistic success? How do the artists themselves interpret this issue? How is this issue viewed by émigré artists? This article is an attempt to answer to these questions. By examining biographical research conducted among Polish émigré artists living in Berlin, London, New York, and Paris I try to show the ambiguity of the term “success”. This concept is variously interpreted by the different narrators and in each instance requires contextual concretization in relation to the biography of the particular artist. This article distinguishes between the objective and subjective dimensions of experiencing success. When taking into consideration the subjective understandings and individual expectations, the category of success changes its meaning depending on the fate of the individual artists. It cannot be narrowed down to only the artistic dimension, because many other aspects of the life of émigré artists are strongly intertwined with it. The fate of those who have succeeded may be understood only if we compare their stories with the stories of artists who remain on the periphery of the art world.
Jakie czynniki wpływają na artystyczny sukces? Jak interpretują go sami twórcy? W jaki sposób odnosi się to do artystów emigrantów? W artykule podjęta została próba odpowiedzi na te pytania. Odnosząc się do wyników badań biograficznych przeprowadzonych wśród polskich artystów emigrantów mieszkających w Berlinie, Nowym Jorku, Londynie i Paryżu ukazano wieloznaczność terminu „sukces”. Ponieważ kategoria ta jest różnorodnie interpretowana przez narratorów za każdym razem musi być odnoszona do szerszego kontekstu biograficznego. W tekście wyodrębnione zostały obiektywne i subiektywne aspekty doświadczani sukcesu. Biorąc pod uwagę subiektywne odczucia, kategoria ta zmienia swoje znaczenie w zależności od losów indywidualnych twórców. Nie może także być zredukowana jedynie do wymiaru artystycznego, ponieważ inne aspekty życia artysty emigranta silnie z nią interferują. Wychodząc z założenia, że los tych którzy odnieśli sukces może zostać zrozumiany jedynie w kontekście losów tych, którzy pozostali na peryferiach świata sztuki w artykule przytoczone zostały wypowiedzi jednych i drugich twórców.
