Purpose: To highlight the current smart city trends and innovations that will shape the future of modern cities. Design/methodology/approach: This article review is based on a theoretical literature review on the idea of smart city trends and innovations globally. The theoretical approach was based on published journals, government sources, and other sources. Findings: Human needs as well as the development of electronic-based projects for urban areas have evolved over the years. Environmental pollution has caused a drastic change in climate, urbanization happening rapidly, and more pandemics are expected in the future. But with modern technology advancements, it's important for public institutions and private entities to collaborate to make cities more sustainable. Smart energy solutions, urban planning, and smart health communities are important to smart city trends that can help to significantly transform urban centers. Originality/value: the presented review paper provides a current realistic overview of the innovations and trends implemented for smart city projects. They are implemented in some of the major cities of the world and their influence is important in shaping the lives of urban residents and the future of cities.

W artykule przedstawiono analizę czynników społeczno-gospodarczych kształtujących rozwój priorytetów zrównoważonego rozwoju. Wykazano, że przy tworzeniu programów rozwoju regionalnego należy wziąć pod uwagę zarówno aktualny stan problemów środowiskowych, jak i zagrożeń technologicznych. Udzielenie finansowego wsparcia dla działań ekologicznych, towarzyszących procesom technologicznym przyczyni się do zrównoważonego rozwoju.
This article presents an analysis of the socio-economic factors shaping the priorities sustainable development. Consider financial support for environmental activities with the main technological factors that determine the environment in Ukraine. It is shown that the formation of regional development programs should take into account the actual state of environmental problems, technological risks and the need for their prevention and minimization. Provide targeted funding for these programs will contribute to sustainable development.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the study is to analyze environmental awareness among employees of companies producing plastics, and subsequently to draw conclusions about the level of their pro-environmental awareness. The motive for the implementation of pro-environmental awareness research in plastics-producing plants was their harmful impact on the environment. Design/methodology/approach: The research was a survey that was carried out among 44 workers of plastics enterprises located in south-eastern Poland in the first quarter of 2018. During the selection of companies for research, it was included: their location (south-eastern Poland), long-term operation (more than 30 years), the same type of activity (production of plastics), and whether pro-environmental activities were practiced. Findings: It was concluded that the level of awareness of the employees of plastic industry employees was on a low level. Research limitations/implications: The research sample is only a preliminary sample. It is planned to obtain data from a larger number of companies and verify the data. Practical implications: Enterprises should focus on meeting customer needs and maintaining high-quality products, but taking into account pro-environmental measures that should be a priority. This is possible if pro-environmental awareness is continually shaped. Social implications: The pro-environmental awareness is small among employees from the enterprises, in which pro-environmental actions were not practiced. Employees do not know how the processes are carried out in the company and whether they have any impact on the natural environment. Additionally, the employees of companies not used pro-environmental activities are unaware of the threats resulting from the activities of their company and do not know that other companies about the same activities already apply such activities. Originality/value: These results will allow better decisions in the context of sustainability and improvement actions to achieve a higher level of awareness among the plastic production companies' employees.

Purpose: This paper aims to assess the impact of entrepreneurial determinants on the sustainable development of enterprises in emerging EU economies from 2008 to 2020. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is empirical, and it consists of conceptual background, research methodology, research results, discussions, and conclusions. The survey covers the enterprise sector in Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania, and Hungary (emerging and developing economies in the EU). I used the correlations coefficients and the Ordinary Least Square Method to verify the strength and direction of influence of entrepreneurial determinants on the sustainable development of enterprises. Findings: In the analyzed countries, there is a diversified influence of individual entrepreneurial determinants on the sustainable development of enterprises, both in terms of direction and strength of influence. Research limitations/implications: The paper has serious limitations in selecting and integrating indicators for the research. Further research requires considering a larger group of determinants, not only strictly entrepreneurial factors. Practical implications: The analysis results indicate that entrepreneurial factors influence the sustainable development of the enterprise sector; therefore, the authorities should coordinate activities and initiatives related to sustainable development and entrepreneurship. Creating financial and non-financial incentives is necessary to run a sustainable business. Social implications: Sustainable development is crucial for the conditions and quality of life. Separating entrepreneurial factors and creating effective institutional support for business initiatives is crucial for sustainable development. Originality/value: A novelty in the paper is an attempt to isolate entrepreneurial determinants of the sustainable development of enterprises. The article is intended for a wide audience, theoreticians and practitioners interested in sustainable development.

In the digital economy, knowledge is produced within spontaneously emerging communities of peers around a shared domain of interest according to a commons-based mode of intellectual production. This significantly differentiates itself from the dominant mode, based on capital and commodity markets. The community constitutes a self-organized and informal social structure that supports sustainable knowledge production, distribution and consumption, and where knowledge becomes a subject of commonification. This article presents a case study of how knowledge commons are managed by coworking communities.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review the literature on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and addresses two research questions: What is the mutual relation between CSR and ESG? and Why CSR and ESG matter to businesses? Design/methodology/approach: The paper applies the method of comprehensive literature review. The analysis of keywords, abstract, and on this basis further deeper analysis of scientific texts allowed to identify the mutual relation between CSR and ESG. Findings: The main conclusion from the conducted analysis is that both concepts - CSR and ESG, apart from being complementary, can be combined not only to improve the strategic management of the organization, but also, in a broader context, to serve the good of both the local community and the whole society. CSR aims to make business responsible, while ESG aims to make it measurable. Research limitations: No empirical study has been conducted to support the findings presented in the study. Originality/value: The paper organizes and systematizes the knowledge on two concepts, i.e., CSR and ESG, which now play an important role in the sustainable management of an organization.

Purpose: Project management is a universally recognized methodology for business and project activities. Organisations are increasingly using project activities to achieve strategic benefits. It is purposed to optimize the time, human and financial resources, without deviating from the planned quality of the final product of the project and while maintaining the principles of sustainability. The energy sector is no exception. The purpose of this paper is to determine trends in energy sector project management. Design/methodology/approach: To present the research concerning project management in energy sector innovations the literature review process was carried out. The analysis of keywords, abstract, and on this basis further deeper analysis of scientific texts allowed to identify trends in project management in the energy sector. There is a research gap in research summarizing trends in the description of the issue of project management in the energy sector. Findings: The literature analysis presented indicates that the interest of scientists is largely directed towards sustainable projects in the energy sector. This has to do with global trends not only in the energy sector but in every sector of the economy. Energy project management should continue to focus on becoming more sustainable, especially when more and more organizations are aware that their strategy should include ecological sustainability, such as eco-innovation and environmental innovation. Originality/value: It is one of the few scientific texts that touches on the problem of project management in the energy sector. In terms of implications, studies have shown that particular emphasis should be placed on the aspects of project teams creating sustainable innovations for the sector, as well as neutralizing the carbon footprint of the project teams themselves.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to identify the level of involvement of the corporations of the EBRD regions in the implementation of the concept of sustainable development, and to evaluate the applied solutions in the field of green management. Design/methodology/approach: The research methods used in the paper include the review of Polish and foreign literature, and the analysis of data from secondary sources. The desk research analysis was conducted on the basis of numerical information contained in the publication entitled "Transition Report 2019-20" and presented on the website of The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Findings: The result of the conducted research include the indication of the corporations in the countries of the EBRD regions that are leaders in the field of green governance and green management, and identification of factors and the extent to which they have an impact on the implementation of sustainable development postulates. Research limitations/implications: The presented findings encourage further research to determine the causes of drastic differences in the field of green governance and green management in the studied corporations of the EBRD regions and the possibility of limiting them. Practical implications: The analysis and evaluation of the implementation of the main practices of green management in the corporations of the EBRD regions allow to identify leaders in this area and apply the model of their operation (benchmarking) to improve the position of the organizations that show deficits. Social implications: The use of the presented data, analyses and conclusions should imply further actions and strategies in enterprises necessary to implement the concept of sustainable development. Originality/value: The paper synthetically presents the significance of the concept of green governance and the application of green management practices by corporations from the EBRD regions.

Purpose: The main aim of the research presented in this article was identification and categorization of the main production waste generated in the textile and clothing industry and their impact on the environment in the context of sustainable development, together with the presentation of several proposals for solutions to the problem of production waste. Nowadays, through the newly emerging EU directives, the increasing population and consumer lifestyle, thus the huge amounts of generated waste, the problem of waste coming from textile and clothing industry will increase and it will be more important to find new solutions to it. Design/methodology/approach: In the research presented in this article, an analysis of the literature on the processes of the textile and clothing industry was used; waste generation from these industries and their impact on the environment along with the concept of sustainable development. Findings: The management of waste from the textile and clothing industry is an important factor influencing the sustainable development of the economy, both in the world and in Poland. Under the newly created EU directives, it will be a very important issue in the future, which will require urgent addressing this topic and finding optimal solutions in the context of sustainable development or the circular economy. Research limitations/implications: In the future, research will be continued in the field of production waste management in the textile and clothing industry, their disposal or recycling. Practical implications: This article provides an overview of quantitative research and diversity of waste from the textile and clothing industry in Poland and in the world. This review shows the importance and scale of the problem and allows for further continuation of research to manage the generated waste. The author has also collected concepts for the further management of post-production waste, which she presented in the article, but they require a broader and more detailed analysis. Originality/value: Based on empirical research, the article shows the scale of the problem that, through the new EU directives on the circular economy and sustainable development, will be a forward-looking and important issue. Additionally, the article presents concepts for waste management from the industrial and consumer perspective.

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to identify the specificity of socially responsible innovations in retail against the background of sustainable development, and to identify examples of socially responsible innovations implemented by selected retail chains in Poland. In the Author's opinion, they are crucial for the development of a responsible society, but also for a sustainable economy. Design/methodology/approach: The methodology applied in the article refers to the methodological canon of management sciences, including, among others, conceptual-theoretical and empirical research methodology. On their basis a critical analysis of foreign and Polish literature in the field of management science, theory of development and functioning of the retail trade has been carried out. The analyzed cases of retail chains were considered representative due to their strong market position and large contribution to the development of the FMCG market (the so-called "best business practices") - for this purpose, the qualitative research methodology was applied, including a case study. Findings: The analysis conducted in this paper indicates that large retail chains are creating socially responsible innovations, thus having a significant impact on the spread of socially responsible practices. These activities are mainly based on shaping the environmental awareness of employees and customers, increasing the safety and quality of products, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, effective waste management, rational use of natural resources, reducing staff turnover and improving their working conditions. Originality/value: The article presents how the literature on management science describes and explains the essence, specificity, and types of socially responsible innovations against the background of the sustainable development concept. On this solid factual basis, socially responsible innovations implemented by selected retail chains in Poland were identified. This allowed to verify theoretical assumptions related to the development of socially responsible innovations with the actual state of affairs, reflected in the analyzed practices of retail chains.

The purpose of this article is to describe the Green Boot Program used by the United States Army to reduce its impact on the environment. Signalized on worth of notable and imitable ecological solutions, there are presented sustainable development activities covering all spheres of operation of the military garrison. It was proposed that actions modeled on the US Army be implemented in units of the Polish Army.

Purpose: The article presents issues related to the transport of slaughter animals in terms of sustainable development and during the time of increased interest in animal rights. The aim of the article is to analyze the functioning of transport companies involved in the transport of animals. The first part of the article presents issues related to animal welfare, which is part of the concept of sustainable development. Particular attention was paid to the issue of welfare during the transport of farm animals to the slaughterhouse. Methodology: The article presents the results of the Supreme Audit Office on the transport of animals, which were carried out in 1998, 2003, 2005 and 2017, and the results of inspections belonging to the tasks of the Veterinary Inspection in the Silesian Voivodeship in 2019 and 2020.Then the author presents her research results. The survey was conducted among the owners of enterprises handling the transport of slaughter animals in the Silesian Voivodeship and among drivers and guards of these enterprises. 94 business owners and 92 drivers transporting animals participated in the study. Chi-square tests were used to show the relationship between the variables Findings: On the basis of the conducted research, it was found that the control system is conducive to the enforcement of the law in the field of transport of animals for slaughter in enterprises. Originality/value: In the context of sustainable development, the subject of animal welfare is being increasingly regarded as essential. Ensuring animal welfare is now the key issue for public opinion, livestock farmers, animal rights organizations, entrepreneurs, transport companies and slaughterhouses. The awareness of people related to publicizing animal abuse is increasing, and we as consumers also have a right to know how animals were treated on farms and during transport.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the author’s research was the evaluation of activities related to eco-innovations of micro- and small-sized enterprises (MSSEs) in the Małopolskie Province. Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents the results of the author’s own surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021 based on a total sample of 524 micro- and small-sized entrepreneurs who declared their interest in taking part in the survey. The entrepreneurs answered questions regarding their companies’ current operations, sources of financing and also assessed their activities in the context of eco-innovative solutions or partnerships with R&B institutions. Findings: The paper presents the role of innovations in the process of sustainable development accounting for environmental aspects as implemented by entrepreneurs as part of investments. Originality/value: research shows how important innovation is in the SME sector.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the important problem of taking into account the expectations of buyers of products to the activities of manufacturing companies in the area of marketing mix to a more sustainable, as a way of modern social management. Design/methodology/approach: The article has a theoretical and empirical character. The theoretical part of the study was prepared on the basis of a review of the literature concerning the subject, while the research part of the work is the result of own survey conducted among the inhabitants of the Silesian province. The research was based on the survey method with the use of distributed questionnaires, also commonly known as street surveys. The tool used to obtain data was a survey questionnaire containing a structured set of open and closed questions. Findings: In the course of the research study it was determined that there should be a modification of the marketing mix elements in terms of environmental and social, by means of which production, trade and service enterprises directly affect consumers. Customers' decision to purchase a product is increasingly dependent on the company's active involvement in pro-environmental and pro-social activities. Research limitations/implications: The research results obtained are not representative in the statistical sense, although they are an interesting approach to the problem and undoubtedly have a cognitive character in the area in question. Practical implications: Business activities of enterprises should focus not only on achieving financial goals or expanding market shares, but should also take into account environmental and social objectives. Middle and high-level managers are expected to change the way of managing the organization into a more pro-environmental and pro-social one, which in turn will contribute to changing the perception of the enterprise itself among consumers, as a sustainable organization. Social implications: Considerations contained in the article indicate the need to change the behavior and attitudes of buyers to a more responsible in terms of environmental protection and other market participants. The article draws attention to the need to make conscious purchase choices, which in turn should contribute to improving the condition of the environment and the life’s quality of societies. Originality/value: As a result of the conducted research study, a theoretical-cognitive gap was identified. It was also found that there is a scarcity of qualitative and quantitative research in the area of the undertaken topic. Therefore, there is a need for further examinations, which should be characterized by intensity and depth in both theoretical and empirical layers. The article is addressed to managers of manufacturing companies, as well as service companies who want to conduct business in accordance with the concept of sustainable development.
