    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie elementów perspektywy socjologicznej, która zdaniem autora jest konieczna dla adekwatnego zrozumienia charakteru zjawisk wykluczenia osób starszych. Autor prezentując definicje i wymiary wykluczenia akcentuje, wzorując się na innych badaczach, niejednoznaczność przyczyn małego uczestnictwa seniorów w niektórych sferach życia społecznego. Pokazano tu elementy socjologicznego ujęcia problemów wyłączenia osób w wieku senioralnym (emerytalnym) ze sfery aktywności zawodowej oraz relacji społecznych w społeczności lokalnej. Refleksja dotyczy zarówno przyczyn takich zjawisk, jak i ich potencjalnych konsekwencji dla starszej osoby i społeczeństwa. W podsumowaniu tej refleksji sformułowano rekomendacje dla zmian niektórych instytucji i praktyk oddziałujących na ludzi w wieku starszym. Na tle tych nieodzownych zmian autor akcentuje potrzebę zastosowania metodologii badań jakościowych w wytyczaniu i ewaluacji dobrych praktyk.
    The aim of the article is to present some elements of sociological perspective, which is necessary to understand the character of social exclusion of the elderly. When presenting the definitions and dimensions of social exclusion the author accentuates following some other researchers the ambiguity of the reasons for a little participation of the elderly in some spheres of social life. Moreover some elements of sociological view on exclusion of older persons from professional activities and social relations in local community have been shown in the text. The reflection concerns reasons for such phenomena as well as their potential consequences for older person and the society. In summation of the reflection some recommendations for changes in some institutions and practices having impact on the elderly have been formulated. In the context of these proposed changes the author accentuates the need for application of the methodology of qualitative research when defining guidelines for good practices and evaluating them.

    W ujęciu rozwojowym starość stanowi tak samo ważny etap życia jak każdy inny. Poznanie psychologicznych aspektów starzenia się oraz różnych czynników mających wpływ na poczucie satysfakcji z obecnej sytuacji życiowej osób w wieku późnej dorosłości stanowi o prawidłowościach procesu adaptacji do starości. Ważnym elementem tego procesu wydają się być działania mające na celu inkluzję tej szczególnie podatnej na wykluczenie społeczne grupy. W tym kontekście warto zastanowić się nad rolą rodziny, społeczeństwa, a także predyspozycjami osobowymi, które mogą mieć wpływ na proces pomyślnej adaptacji do starości, w tym możliwość realizowania potrzeb i podnoszenia jakości życia seniorów. W niniejszym artykule, odwołując się do założeń teorii aktywności oraz teorii wycofania się, przedstawione zostaną próby aplikacji badań własnych, dotyczących osobowych aspektów mających wpływ na poczucie dobrostanu osób aktywnych zawodowo w okresie późnej dorosłości.
    Old age is, in terms of development, just as important stage of life, like everyone else. Understanding the psychological aspects of aging and the different factors affecting the feeling of satisfaction with the current life situation of people in their late adulthood, it is about the regularities of adaptation to old age. An important element of this process appear to be efforts to inclusion of this group, who are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion. In this context, it is worth considering the role of family, society, and personal predisposition that can affect the process of successful adaptation to old age, including the ability to meet the needs and improve the quality of life of seniors. In this article, referring to the assumptions of the theory of activity and the theory of withdrawal, will be presented trials application own research on the personal aspects affecting the sense of well-being of economically active persons in late adulthood.

    Opis:
    Purpose: This paper is devoted to elderly people and their interaction with smartphones. The analysis of the state of the art inspired the formulation of research questions related to interaction of elderly people with smartphones, e.g. how do they input data or how do they start the SOS signal. Design/methodology/approach: In order to answer the research questions, an electronic questionnaire was prepared and executed. The survey consisted of 11 questions and was completed by 40 people. Findings: The conducted research has shown that seniors are increasingly using smartphones for a variety of tasks, including (among others) text messaging and multimedia. Originality/value: The presented research is the most current research on the behaviour of seniors using smartphones on the Polish market. The obtained results can be used, among others, when designing applications and devices for seniors.

    Artykuł pokazuje jak ważna jest dla jakości życia osób starszych możliwość korzystania z oferty dziennych domów pomocy społecznej (ddps). Problem ten ukazano z perspektywy samych seniorów, kierownika takiej placówki oraz architekta – eksperta w dziedzinie projektowania budynków i wnętrz pod kątem ludzi starszych. W zestawieniu tych punktów widzenia wyraźna jest mentalność pozycyjna. W przypadku kierownika decyduje ona o jego postawach i wyobrażeniach o możliwości realizacji innowacji, proponowanych przez studentów architektury.
    The article shows how significant for the quality of life of elderly people is an opportunity to participate in the activities organized by day care centre. The issue has been presented from the viewpoints of seniors themselves, the head of the institution and an architect who is the expert in the field of interior and exterior design for the elderly. The comparison of these viewpoints reflects the differences in positional mentality. In case of the head this quality determines his attitudes and his ideas about the possibility of innovative changes proposed by the students of architecture.

    The aim of the article is to describe the MEAP (Multiphasic Environmental Assessment Procedure) method which had and may have in the future many practical applications in management of care settings for elderly people. The author starts with presenting a methodological foundations of the method, then shows the construction of the tools and diagnostic techniques within the method. As the method turned out to be helpful and may still be helpful in management of settings for senior citizens, the author presents its practical applications in different areas (scopes) of social policy institutions’ functioning (including care settings) in several countries. Finally the author sums up the advantages of the MEAP method which emerged due to previous applications.

    Opis:
    Purpose: The aim of the article is to present empirical arguments supporting the thesis that universally designed residential environment (housing estate, building, house, nursing home etc.) if has to be friendly for elderly people it has an inclusive impact on them, liquidates barriers of satisfaction of their needs and also satisfies the needs of other age groups. Design/methodology/approach: The analyses presented in the article are based on the idea of universal design applicable to housing environment. Data used in these analyses come from several research projects in which the author was personally involved as a member of a research team or the head. These are both qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative data (surveys) gathered during the studies conducted on chosen housing estates in Silesia (Southern Poland). Findings: According to these analyses substantial percentages of senior inhabitants of the three housing estates in Katowice may live without needed support in their late years when this support is necessary and crucial. Moreover the respondents of presented studies stated that they experience barriers to their mobility in a building or in their housing estate. As they want to be a part of a local community of their estates and they need more support as they get older some of them desire to live close to young people in their residential environment. Research limitations/implications: As the population of many housing estates are constantly aging and the adjustment of the infrastructure of existing and built housing estates to the needs of different age groups becomes a significant future challenge, SWOT analyses of the estates dedicated to these groups (including senior citizens) should be commissioned by the management crews of these estates. Originality/value: The studies presented in the article show what qualities specific for senior citizens should be included in residential environments currently created and planned for future. The text is addressed to professionals like e.g. sociologists, architects, who are interested in the process of creation of residential environment adjusted to the needs of different groups of inhabitants including elderly people.

    Artykuł pokazuje adaptację do pobytu w domu pomocy społecznej (dps) jako zjawisko indywidualne, którego tłem są w dużej mierze dotychczasowe doświadczenia życiowe seniorów. Badania przeprowadzono techniką wywiadu narracyjnego z mieszkańcami jednego z dps-ów w Zabrzu. W ich rezultacie zarysowano szczegółowe problemy dla dalszych badań, których celem powinno być m.in. stworzenie i przetestowanie koncepcji domu spokojnej starości dla mniejszej niż dotąd liczby osób, która w jak największym stopniu uwzględni indywidualne potrzeby seniorów.
    The article shows the adaptation to the stay in a nursing home as an individual phenomena, for which earlier life experience is the very important context. The narrative interviews has been conducted among chosen residents of one of the nursing homes in Zabrze. This resulted in the outline of some problems for further research, that should be aimed at the creation and testing of an idea of a nursing home for smaller groups of residents, in which the very individual needs of seniors will be included.
