Przedstawione w niniejszym artykule zagadnienia są przedmiotem rozważań i badań, jakie prowadzi Instytut logistyki i Magazynowania. Dotyczą one zmian i kierunków rozwoju logistyki. Zaprezentowane rozważania stanowią kanwę do szerszej dyskusji na ten temat, szczególnie w kontekście zmian, jakie czekają polską logistykę.
    The global economy continues to grow, creating new challenges. Therefore, present increasingly collides with future visions and, on this basis, new directions and concepts for the development of logistics are developed, and, at the same time, items which will be crucial are indicated. It is also worth noticing that logistics itself increasingly influences, directly and indirectly, the economy and the transformations ta king place in it and thus generates more challenges for itself. The issues presented in the article are the subject of reflection and research conducted by the Institute of Logistics and Worehousing on changes and directions of development of logistics. The reflection presented in the article provides the basis for a wider discussion on this topic, particularly in the context of changes that await our Polish logistics.

    Purpose: The main purpose of the paper is to present and discuss the assumptions of the model and indicate whether the regional innovativeness can be improved with the help of multi-branch co-operation oriented so as to form new solutions to contemporary development problems. An additional purpose of the paper is to indicate barriers that hinder the application of this form of co-operation in Polish regions. Design/methodology/approach: The paper has theoretical and reviewing nature. It was drawn up based on an analysis of the literature on the topic and the results of foreign authors’ research along with the information obtained from practicians (management board members of the cluster active in the West Pomeranian region). Findings: Quintuple Helix model is a concept which explains the principles and effects of co-operation for the improvement of regional innovativeness and development in the conditions of the natural environment challenges and sustainable development. This co-operation is built between regional partners of innovative processes. The experience of highly developed countries shows that such organized cooperation is effective. In Poland, this concept is very rarely used, and its implementation encounters significant barriers. Practical implications: The presented considerations are important for entities of regional innovative networks. They will gain knowledge of the Quintuple Helix concept in the light of the challenges of the modern world (economic, ecological, demographic, cultural and others). In addition, they learn the essence and scope of barriers to introducing effective innovative cooperation. This will allow them to reduce barriers. In the future, new solutions to problems of the development of society and economy will appear in Polish regions faster. Originality/value: The added value of the article is the presentation of the Quintuple Helix model as a tool to solve sustainable development problems in the region. This concept is not widely known in Poland, nor used in the mesoscale. This is due to the lack of interdisciplinary research on this issue and very strong barriers to such cooperation. They are found in all elements of this model. Its practical implementation requires their removal. In the article, the author diagnosed and described them.

    Information and communications technology (ICT) in the recent times has become a viable strategic policy option adopted by many businesses in order to compete favourably in a competitive and dynamic ICT driven market. This strategic move by business organizations is being hindered by some challenges which has invariably reduced the benefits accruable from ICT deployment for business operations especially in the inventory management. The paper identified challenges facing the use of ICT for inventory management by firms in the Nigerian Brewery industry. Other objectives of the paper are to x-ray how these challenges had impacted on the inventory management in the Nigerian Brewery industry, the effect of these challenges on customers' satisfaction, relationship between these challenges and inventory costs incurred by firms in the industry, and to suggest appropriate solutions. Primary data formed the methodology of the study. It was established during the field survey that challenges facing the use of ICT had impacted negatively on the performance of inventory management in the Nigerian brewery industry during the period under study. It was also revealed that the cost of software was a major challenge in the industry and that the identified challenges had significant effect on customers' satisfaction of the firms in the Nigerian brewery industry.

    Opis:
    Purpose: Nowadays environmental education associated with sustainable development presents a critical social challenge. The objective of this study was to identify and assess the interest in sustainable development, along with initiatives undertaken in this respect, by the students of selected university courses. The sample consisted of the students of management, who, due to the specific character of their education, will prospectively manage organizations or become entrepreneurs, i.e. will become responsible for setting the trends for the development of organizations. Design/methodology/approach: The subject matter of the present study pertains to environment-friendly attitudes of the students of selected universities in Lublin. The study was conducted by means of a diagnostic poll which was developed on the basis of the review of literature. Findings: The analysis of the results of the study revealed that respondents’ awareness regarding the impact of individuals upon the environment is strong. However, certain shortages were observed with regard to the impact of enterprises upon the natural environment. Research limitations/implications: It seems advisable to conduct this research also with students from other faculties. Practical implications: It seems advisable to commence environmental education during undergraduate studies so that students recognize the impact of enterprises upon the natural environment as early as possible. Originality/value: The article contains new research results about environmental education associated with sustainable development, which were conducted based on the self-developed questionnaire.

    Niniejszy referat przedstawia przemyślenia autora dotyczące problemów i wyzwań, przed którymi stoją współcześni inżynierowie. Pierwsza część artykułu to próba diagnozy wyzwań stawianych inżynierom przez różne, nie tylko, a nawet nie przede wszystkim, techniczne uwarunkowania współczesności. W tym kontekście autor podejmuję próbę identyfikacji wyzwań dla wybranych kategorii problemów. Wyniki identyfikacji stanowią punkt wyjścia dla zawartych w kolejnej części referatu propozycji działań ukierunkowanych na doskonalenie i rozwój wiedzy i kompetencji inżynierów aktywnych zawodowo oraz – przede wszystkim – na konieczne do podjęcia, zdaniem autora, działania doskonalące i modyfikujące system przygotowania do realizacji zadań inżynierskich studentów uczelni technicznych. W podsumowaniu zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę szerszego uzupełnienia treści kształcenia na uczelniach technicznych o zagadnienia nietechniczne oraz – na zasadzie wzajemności – uwzględnienia problemów techniki w kształceniu studentów na kierunkach nietechnicznych.
    The paper presents the author's thoughts on the problems and challenges facing today's engineers. The first part of the article is an attempt to diagnose the challenges posed to engineers by different, not only or even primarily, by the technical challenges of modernity. In this context, the author tries to identify such challenges for some categories of problems. Identification results provide a starting point for the choice of presented in the next, the third part of the paper, proposals for action aimed at the improvement and development of knowledge and expertise of engineers professionally active, and – above all – to the need to take improvement actions and modifying the system to prepare for the implementation of engineering tasks students of technical universities. In summary the request is highlighted for greater performing of content of education at technical universities of non-technical issues and – on the principle of reciprocity – take into account the problems of technology in the education of "non-technical" students.

    Purpose: The aim of the article is to analyse key logistics challenges in the enterprise management in contemporary conditions on the example of selected manufacturing and trading enterprises. On the basis of the literature studies, the author has presented contemporary trends in enterprise management and analysed key logistics challenges related to them. The research methodology has been described and the examined population has been briefly characterized. The results of the research concerning key logistics challenges in the management of the surveyed manufacturing and trading enterprises have been presented. Design/methodology/approach: The article is based on the study of literature and own empirical research. The results of the author’s empirical research presented in the article come from more extensive surveys conducted in 2017 regarding the analysis of logistics systems and logistics processes management in Polish manufacturing and trading enterprises in 2014-2016 in the context of building enterprise competitiveness. The research was conducted by the use of direct interview method with managers responsible for logistics in the surveyed companies using the author’s detailed questionnaire. 298 small, medium and large enterprises were examined from Warmia-Masuria Province (55.4%) and Podlasie Province (44.6%), characterized by a diversified competitive position on the market. Findings: The conducted research confirmed that meeting the contemporary challenges of enterprise management depends more and more on logistics. Logistics activities and logistics solutions enabled the surveyed companies to create competitive advantage, increase profit, profitability and enterprise value, and build competitiveness. Logistics managers from the best surveyed companies combined a strategic approach for creating a comprehensive concept of logistics activities and solutions with a quick and adequate response to permanently changing market conditions. Due to the limited volume of the article, only selected aspects of key logistics challenges in the management of the surveyed enterprises were presented. Research limitations/implications: The literature emphasizes that logistics will have an ever growing influence on enterprise management, which is also confirmed by the empirical studies; more and more logistics managers, including in Polish companies, administer logistics processes on the scale of an enterprise and the entire supply chain, or on the scale of an enterprise including opportunities and threats resulting from the existence of a network of co-operators and opportunities associated with establishing relationships with new co-operators. The issues presented in the article require further, in-depth research. Practical implications: The results of theoretical and empirical studies presented in the article have a practical significance. The author offered logistics managers of Polish manufacturing and trading enterprises practical suggestions for using logistics in the process of enterprise management and presented key challenges related to them. Originality/value: The article fills the cognitive gap regarding the issues of key logistics challenges in enterprise management in contemporary conditions. The author carried out a comprehensive literature review on contemporary trends in the enterprise management and analysis of key logistics challenges related to them. The article also fills the empirical gap. It presents the research results concerning key logistics challenges in management of the surveyed manufacturing and trading enterprises. The research results presented in the article can be used by logistics managers of Polish manufacturing and trading enterprises.
