Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the study is to determine changes in the cost efficiency of the administration of public higher education in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The biennial cost Malmquist productivity index was used to study changes in cost efficiency of 58 public higher education institutions in 2014-2016. The results were presented for 6 groups of universities, according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland classification. Findings: The research shows that out of 6 groups of institutions accepted for the study, 2 achieved an increase and 1 a decrease in the Malmquist cost index in both study periods. Changes in the Malmquist cost index in the analyzed period are small as the index ranged from 0.98 to 1.06. Both component overall efficiency change and cost-technical change contributed to the change in the Malmquist index level. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation of the study are the analysis of changes in cost efficiency only. Additionally, only public universities supervised by the ministry responsible for higher education were studied. Future research should include changes in allocative efficiency using the Malmquist index. In addition, a larger research sample should be considered, taking into account other public universities, including medical, arts, etc., and non-public universities. Practical implications: The considerations presented are relevant to public university authorities. The article indicates the need to assess cost effectiveness in evaluating the functioning of a higher education institution. This belongs to the responsibilities of management control in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of HEIs and spending of public funds. Information on the variation of cost efficiency between HEIs, assigned to 6 groups, may become a stimulus to conduct an assessment of this economic category in a given unit and strive to improve it. Originality/value: The added value of the article is the use for the first time of the cost Malmquist index to examine higher education. Also, the use of a modified version of the cost Malmquist index to estimate efficiency assuming variable returns-to-scale.

The paper presents the results of a study aimed at identifying and assessing the efficiency of working capital management strategies in enterprises. The analysis focuses on the volumes of net working capital and its cycle (dependent variable), as well as the conversion cycles of its main components (independent variables). The study comprises the entire population of manufacturing enterprises in Poland covered by public statistics (nearly 14 thousand entities), divided into size categories (small, medium and large). The long-term analysis covers the period of 2007-2018. The study makes use of the measures that characterise working capital management strategies and their effects including net working capital volumes and working capital cycles. The study also employs measures related to correlations, similarity, density, positioning and classifying, as well as descriptive statistics. The effect of the study is the verification of three research hypotheses related to the characteristics, correlations, profile similarities and identification of working capital strategies in manufacturing enterprises.

Opis:
Purpose: The main reason for developing the model was to fulfil the gap in the scope of synthetic/aggregate measure of corporate innovativeness in terms of company’s results in this area and their impact on its performance. Design/methodology/approach: In the proposed concept two aspects have been considered: quantitative and qualitative results of company’s innovation activity (i) and impact of this results on financial performance of company and its efficiency (ii). Due to the fact, that access to information on innovative activities results of companies is highly diversified, proposed model provides two versions to use: one, more general, based on public sources of data (Public Data Approach) and one, more detailed, based on data which should be collected through survey research (Survey Data Approach). The basis for corporate resultant innovativeness model creation was an assumption, that the ultimate market success of the company is not determined by how many innovative solutions it implements and introduces to the market and with what force it does it, but how these solutions will be accepted by the market and what economic benefits the company will receive due to them. Findings: Proposed methodology of innovativeness assessment gives a chance to eliminate several key shortcomings of the so far used methods and concepts of corporate innovativeness measurement and assessment. Research limitations/implications: Input data accessibility, development of knowledge (rules) bases needed to perform fuzzy inference. Practical implications: Presented model gives an opportunity to assess and compare enterprises in terms of their resultant innovativeness and then to assess the impact of this innovativeness on their performance. Social implications: Assessments generated by presented model can be basis for managerial decisions inside the assessed enterprise or investment decisions of investors in the capital market. Originality/value: Original approach for aggregate corporate resultant innovativeness assessment that eliminates several weaknesses of methods used so far.

In present study the problem of an alarm systems optimization was presented and the stages of the multicriteria structured optimization method in cost-functional characteristics of the alarm system were also described. The method represents a combination of the proposed reflection and selection schemes in the genetic algorithm that solves the extreme combinatorics problem.
W proponowanym badaniu przedstawiono problem optymalizacji systemów alarmowych oraz zostały opisane etapy metody wielokryterialnej strukturalnej cenowo-funkcjonalnej optymalizacji systemu alarmowego. Metoda stanowi kombinację refleksji i planu wyboru algorytmu genetycznego, który rozwiązuje problem ekstremalnej kombinatoryki.

Purpose: The article concerns the influence of employees’ dynamic capabilities on job performance and the role of e-leadership in strengthening such a relation. Design/methodology/approach: The hypotheses were verified among 1200 organizations operating in Poland, Italy and USA during 2nd wave of COVID-19 pandemic. The statistical reasoning was based on linear regression model with moderator. Findings: The results show that e-leadership is indeed strengthening the positive influence of employees’ dynamic capabilities on job performance, and moreover – such effect is much stronger among organizations operating in crisis during circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic, striving to survive. Research limitations/implications: The empirical research should be treated as a pilot study, as the systemic literature review is limited and has a character of an initial review aiming at the identification of future direction of research in this regard. Practical implications: The obtained results show that organizations, which experience crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are characterized by a much higher level of EDC influence on job performance than those, which do not experience crisis. It is clearly showing the important role of EDC in managing such organizations and transforming their way of doing business in order to survive the crisis. Originality/value: The obtained results contribute new knowledge to the field of job performance management during crisis, confirming that dynamic capabilities are crucial among employees and this specific type of capabilities should be shaped and enhanced among those organizations struggling through crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

In the paper the author discussed issues concerning a coal output reserve in a group of collieries. The maximization of a coal output in a group of collieries determines the highest possible work productivity, which is one of key indicators affecting the economic efficacy in hard coal mining activity. The author focused on factors determining shearer’s productivity and its effective work time in a longwall. Technical and organisational determinants of work performance are taken into consideration to analyse technical and organisational solutions which make technological processes less labour-consuming. Additionally, the algorithm of the determination of potential coal output reserve in a group of longwalls was presented. The research analysis was focused on a selected group of longwalls of two collieries. The necessary input data derive from source materials of collieries and monitoring of longwalls’ work parameters. The undertaken study brought in the estimated changes of work performance in a selected group of collieries.
W artykule autor podjął dyskusję dotyczącą rezerwy wydobycia dobowego węgla w grupie kopalń węgla kamiennego. Maksymalizacja wydobycia dobowego węgla kamiennego w grupie kopalń determinuje najwyższy możliwy do osiągnięcia poziom wydajności pracy, która jest jednym z kluczowych wskaźników decydujących o efektywności ekonomicznej w działalności górnictwa węgla kamiennego. Autor skoncentrował swoje badania na czynnikach decydujących o produktywności kombajnu ścianowego oraz efektywnym czasie jego pracy w ścianie wydobywczej. Techniczne i organizacyjne determinanty wydajności pracy zostały poddane analizie w celu ustalenia rozwiązań techniczno -organizacyjnych umożliwiających ograniczenie pracochłonności procesów technologicznych. Dodatkowo w artykule został przedstawiony algorytm ustalenia potencjalnej rezerwy wydobycia dobowego w grupie ścian wydobywczych. Obliczenia przeprowadzono dla grupy ścian wydobywczych w dwóch kopalniach węgla kamiennego. Niezbędne do analizy dane wejściowe zostały uzyskane z materiałów źródłowych kopalń oraz monitoringu parametrów pracy ścian wydobywczych. Podjęte badania umożliwiły oszacowanie zmian wydajności pracy w wyselekcjonowanej grupie kopalń.

Information and communications technology (ICT) in the recent times has become a viable strategic policy option adopted by many businesses in order to compete favourably in a competitive and dynamic ICT driven market. This strategic move by business organizations is being hindered by some challenges which has invariably reduced the benefits accruable from ICT deployment for business operations especially in the inventory management. The paper identified challenges facing the use of ICT for inventory management by firms in the Nigerian Brewery industry. Other objectives of the paper are to x-ray how these challenges had impacted on the inventory management in the Nigerian Brewery industry, the effect of these challenges on customers' satisfaction, relationship between these challenges and inventory costs incurred by firms in the industry, and to suggest appropriate solutions. Primary data formed the methodology of the study. It was established during the field survey that challenges facing the use of ICT had impacted negatively on the performance of inventory management in the Nigerian brewery industry during the period under study. It was also revealed that the cost of software was a major challenge in the industry and that the identified challenges had significant effect on customers' satisfaction of the firms in the Nigerian brewery industry.

In the paper the author discussed issues concerning the determinants of effective work time and its influence on an employment level in hard coal mining. An employment level and its structure are among key factors determining work productivity in a colliery. The study was undertaken in a selected Polish colliery, based upon source materials and direct interviews with the managerial staff. The results of undertaken research were estimated changes of an employment level in a selected colliery due to changes in technical parameters increasing effective work time. The analysis was done making use of the IT tool, System Supporting Employment Level Planning in a Colliery, elaborated in the Institute of Management and Administration of Silesian University of Technology. The author also recommended possible actions in a long term resulting in increasing effective work time, and finally in improving work productivity in an analysed colliery.
W artykule autor podjął dyskusję na temat czynników determinujących efektywny czas pracy i jego wpływu na poziom zatrudnienia w górnictwie węgla kamiennego. Poziom zatrudnienia oraz jego struktura stanowią główne czynniki determinujące wydajność pracy w kopalni węgla kamiennego. Badania, które zostały przeprowadzone w wybranej polskiej kopalni węgla kamiennego, zostały oparte na analizie materiałów źródłowych oraz wywiadach bezpośrednich z kadrą menedżerską wytypowanej kopalni. W efekcie przeprowadzonych badań zostały ustalone zmiany w poziomie zatrudnienia analizowanej kopalni w wyniku optymalizacji parametrów technicznych, zwiększającej wykorzystanie efektywnego czasu pracy. Analiza poziomu zatrudnienia została przeprowadzona z wykorzystaniem narzędzia informatycznego SWPPZKWK (Systemu Wspomagania Planowania Poziomu Zatrudnienia w Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego), opracowanego w Instytucie Zarządzania i Administracji Politechniki Śląskiej. Dodatkowo w artykule autor przedstawił rekomendacje możliwych działań długoterminowych, które mogą doprowadzić do zwiększenia efektywnego czasu pracy górników, co umożliwi osiągnięcie poprawy wydajności pracy w analizowanej kopalni węgla kamiennego.

Purpose: There are several factors that affect the satisfaction and performance of virtual and face-to-face teams. Literature shows however, that there is a research gap as to the influence regarding the analysis of those factors in regards to different generations. The purpose of the paper is the youngest generation – Gen Z functions in virtual and face-to-face teams and how the type of team influences the performance and satisfaction of team members. Design/methodology/approach: Adopting a generational approach, a research design, including an experiment and a survey, was developed in order to analyze if the type of teamwork affects performance and satisfaction of Generation Z representatives. Findings: Findings suggest that the youngest, tech-savvy generation functions easier and more naturally in virtual teams, showing no significant differences in performance in virtual and face 16 to-face teams, and even indicate that working in virtual teams is more satisfying than working in traditional teams. Practical implications: The results of the research can provide a basis for managerial decisions when selecting members of real and virtual teams. Originality/value: The paper contributes to the ongoing scientific debate by presenting the perspective of Generation Z on virtual work, which, to a certain extent, contradicts current beliefs about performance and satisfaction in traditional and virtual teams. It shows that the generational approach should be included in team design in order improve team and organizational competitiveness.

Purpose: The article presents the research results concerning employees’ competencies in JZR Ltd. (Jastrzębskie Zakłady Remontowe Ltd.). Human resources management directly affects the operational results of the activity of a manufacturing company. The managers need to recruit employees possessing a high level of competencies. The key expected result is better economic effects. The JZR Development Programme is a good example of the complexity of processes that should be taken into account in good decisions in the area of human resources management in an activity of a manufacturing company. The main purpose of the research was to identify and analyse key employees’ competencies needed to launch new products on the market. The specificity of machine-building enterprises determines the scope and scale of the necessary activities for efficient and effective human resources management. Design/methodology/approach: The objectives of the research were achieved by the analysis of a recruitment process executed in the JZR Development Programme and a questionnaire survey within the project "Development of the skills ecosystem in four countries of the Visegrad Group". Findings: It was found that key elements determining the productivity level of the JZR Development Programme are the high technical and soft competencies of new employees. A risk analysis is also of high magnificence in so complex and capital-consuming projects. Research limitations/implications: The research limitations are due to the complexity of the system, the difficulties arising from the specificity of the mine environment, the lack of the possibility of ongoing diagnostics of the entire infrastructure (e.g. pipeline specification, the ability to measure sediment in water galleries, smooth change of the speed of drive mechanisms, etc.). Practical implications: The analysed investment programme requires workers specializing in the construction and designing of scraper conveyors, belt conveyors and powered supports. Soft skills such as teamwork skills or knowledge of project management methods and tools are highly needed as well. The activity of JZR Ltd. needs specialized software in the field of machine construction in terms of technology and design. Social implications: The expected requirements are strictly connected with IT skills which should be developed within the education process, especially at technical universities. Manufacturing companies like JZR Ltd. need to participate actively in creating the profile of a graduate at universities. Another possible activity could be achieved by cooperation with a potential candidate for work in a manufacturing company. Originality/value: The value of the research is the identified requirements in the range of analyzed technical and soft competencies which could be treated as a benchmark for similar complex manufacturing development projects. According to what was analyzed in the area of literature review we were able to find, there are no specific studies referring and reporting on employees’ competencies required in projects in mining industry.

Contrary to the predictions that the informal sector in developing countries, particularly Africa is marginal and exhibits tendency to disappear as most of these nations’ experienced satisfactory level of economic development. The informal sector has not only increased in intensity, it has grown to dominate economic activities in Africa countries. The purpose of this paper is to examine the epistemic reflections of the traditional view of the informal sector in developing countries vis-à-vis evidence of the failure of its transient predictions in Africa. To achieve the objectives of this paper, systematic review of literature on these issues were presented and discussed. The paper revealed that the growth of the informal sector has occurred in connection with declining competitiveness and productivity performance in Africa resulting to rising economic depression, growing unemployment and poverty level among others. Additionally, the informal sector has been generally neglected and has suffered severe discrimination in a number of important dimensions; hence, there is growing neglect and political will to propel the transition of the informal sector into formal economy. Against the aforementioned backdrops, the paper concluded that though, the informal sector is neglected, it has however, come to be a key components of the Africa economy. Similarly, against the apparent economic challenges presently ravaging most Africa countries, the informal sector will continue to gain popularity. On this note, the paper recommended the need to promote equitable linkages between the informal and the formal sector through appropriate inclusive policy framework with a view of increasing the wider development implications of the informal sector initiatives, as well as the political and institutional barriers that impede its activities and growth.
