Opis:
We spend a substantial part of our lives in employment, in the work environment among our co-workers. A working group is comprised of people who are very different but converge together in their need for communication and joint action. Therefore, especially in the workplace, standards of social behaviour must be respected. The ability to create, maintain and lead work teams is one of the most important conditions for successful management and the manager's personality is important. Status of the manager has high social prestige. It is related to working conditions, the distinctive character of their work, the degree of responsibility and professional culture, their vocation, professional and moral performance, as well as overall personality profile. Effective leadership is based on respect and trust.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper aims at providing comparative analysis of the influence of cultural determinants on the managers’ perceptions of human resources management practices, as a factor conditioning application of evidence-based management. Design/methodology/approach: This article presents the study of 121 managers in Poland, on their perception of HRM practices and analyses the consistency of findings with the Hofstede cultural dimensions model. Structured questionnaire developed by Rynes et al. (2002) in the US and used by Tenhiälä et al. (2016) in Finland, Spain and South Korea including 34 items on management practices, employment practices, training and development, staffing and compensation and benefits have been used. Comparative analysis of managers’ perceptions in 5 countries have been performed, and analysed from the perspective of cultural determinants. Findings: Significant differences among analysed countries have been noted in relation to managers’ perceptions of HRM practices, interpreted using the Hofstede’s model of cultural determinants. Five dimensions have been identifies as the most likely determinant of observable differences. Cultural factors have been found to explain perceptions of HRM practices in Poland, as well as in countries with both similar cultural dimensions profiles or shared characteristics. Research limitations/implications: The empirical part – questionnnaire in Poland – was performed during Covid-19 pandemic, which might have affected the perceptions of managers on what works in relation to HRM practices, as well as the external conditions under which the research was performed changed significantly over the course of last two years. Practical implications: Findings from the managers’ survey have been analysed from the perspective of cultural determinants, therefore making a link between perceptions and measurable and well defined variables of cultural origin, as represented by Hofstede’s dimensions. This implies, that more attention should be paid to culturally-grounded differences in cases where more evidence-based practices are intended to be implemented in organisations. Originality/Value: Paper presents original research findings, by providing comparative evidence on the managers’ perceptions of HRM practices in cross-cultural context, with application of the Hofstede cultural dimensions model.

Purpose: The main purpose of the research was to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the communication process with employees on the example of the Kaufland Polska branch located in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. A complementary goal was to identify the most important managerial tasks and skills in this area. Design/methodology/approach: The article presents a theoretical approach to internal communication based on the literature, while the own research allowed for the analysis and evaluation of this process. The survey method was used, in which the research technique was used in the form of an interview according to the developed questionnaire. Findings: Communication between the manager and employees is two-way and there is feedback, both sides show commitment and show an open attitude to make the process effective. Employees assessed the current internal communication process and the functions performed by the manager in this process very positively, however, they are also able to notice shortcomings related to communication. Research limitations/implications: The study was conducted among all employees of only one branch of Kaufland Polska. An additional limitation was the epidemiological situation in Poland caused by covid-19, which made it impossible to apply an additional research method – a participant observation method that would enrich the results obtained in the main study. Practical implications: In order to improve the internal communication process, the manager should encourage employees to express their opinions and suggestions on topics related to their job position, team communication or observed problems. It is important that the manager cares about the quality and continuous improvement of the communication process and his own interpersonal skills, so that there are as few communication barriers as possible. Originality/value: The communication process should be tailored to the specificity of the organization. It is completely different in a small enterprise than in a large hypermarket chain, where there are teams of employees in various positions, working in shifts, often with customers present and under time pressure. The obtained research results made it possible to assess the current internal communication process, and the application of the formulated guidelines will certainly improve the communication process and increase employee involvement, and ultimately the quality of service and customer satisfaction.

Purpose: An attempt to identify the competencies of the project manager desired by the employers and to determine whether changes have occurred over time. Design/methodology/approach: Job offers were automatically downloaded from website with job offers. An analysis of text mining of fragments of offers describing the competence was carried out. The analysis of text mining included initial text processing, creation of corpora of analyzed documents, creation of a document-term matrix, topic modeling algorithm and the use of classic methods derived from data mining. Findings: The most frequently used words/n-grams and the correlation of selected words/ n-grams with other words/n-grams were presented in the form of drawings. Based on the frequency of words/n-grams and the correlation value, efforts were made to identify the project manager competencies. The topic modeling algorithm was used to generate topics that can also be used to identify expected project manager competencies. Research limitations/implications: Only offers written in Polish, downloaded from one websites with job offers, which had the phrase “kierownik projektu” (“project manager”) in their job title, were analyzed. Data was collected from 09 to 11 April 2018 and from 09 to 11 April 2019. Practical implications: The method applied can be used by organizations preparing for the profession of a project manager, to modify and better adapt curricula to the needs of the labor market. Originality/value: Studies have shown that text mining of job offers can, to some extent, help determine the desired project manager competence.

The choice of leadership style demonstrated by people in managerial positions is conditioned by numerous factors and specific organisational situations. However, every manager has an individual inclination to act in a consistent way, which in science is referred to with the term leadership style. These personal tendencies are to a large extent determined by personality, therefore, it is worth considering the dimension of managers’ cognitive functioning. The “ME as manager” construct is a cognitive representation that creates certain tendencies which are visible in a manager’s working style and the resulting effectiveness of their actions.

Opis:
Purpose: This article presents research into the interdependencies between leadership styles and the sense of meaning of life, perceived as a psychological category. Design/methodology/approach: The aim was to either capture the relationship or reveal the lack of dependency between the leadership style preferred by managers – understood in a theoretical approach as a mental representation – and the experienced sense of the meaning of life. Two recognised and reliable research tools were deployed: the WERK Leadership Style Inventory, by U. Brzezińska and M. Rafalak, and the Purpose in Life Test, by J.C. Crumbaugh and L.T. Maholic. Findings: The research demonstrates that the sense of meaning of life, as a psychological category, does not influence managers’ preferences in terms of the adopted leadership style. Research limitations/implications: Research continuation is advisable, but with a larger sampling group and additional breakdown into the organisation’s levels and decision-making autonomy of the managers involved. Practical implications: The lack of correlation between experiencing the sense of life and the declared leadership style – as demonstrated – may imply that such axiological alienation might affect efficiency and generate stress and dissatisfaction with one’s vocational activities. Social implications: This includes the axiological aspect, understood as the feeling of sense of life, in managerial behaviour schemes, which may effectively drive the organisation towards corporate social responsibility. Originality/value: It was demonstrated that leadership style seems to be a construct from a different axiological category than sense of life and, therefore, is largely subject to the influence of situational contexts, such as corporate culture or standards.

Purpose: The main aim of this paper is to analyze the roles performed by line managers in human resource management at innovation centers in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The study reviews the subject literature, as well as discusses the results of surveys carried out among line managers of innovation centers from Poland and analyses the research problem applying a descriptive method. Findings: Thanks to empirical research, the paper analyses the roles of line managers in human resource management at innovation centers in Poland and determines the level of fulfillment of individual roles. The importance of different roles for effective implementation of statutory objectives of innovation centers was also identified. The results of empirical research allowed to create certain generalizations concerning the roles performed by line managers of innovation centers in Poland. Research limitations: The limitation of the conducted research consists in, most of all, carrying out surveys only among line managers of innovation centers and, on the basis of the answers given, defining their roles in human resource management. Originality/value: The results of the study complement the gap in knowledge regarding the roles of line managers in human resource management at innovation centers in Poland. The conducted studies of the subject literature confirm the lack of research in this field.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the article is to show the ethical challenges of a modern manager in times of crisis and how to deal with them in the context of the original concept of human respect for ethical values, developed by Józef Tischner. Design/methodology/approach: In-depth literature analysis was used in both organizational issues and philosophical texts. Findings: They showed that in the case of organization, along with literal records, the key issue is to respect human dignity and develop human self-awareness. The focus was primarily on the issue of management’s responsibility for implementing ethical behavior in the organization, and pointing to the risk of crossing the border, which leads directly to human exploitation. Social implications: The presented theses may encourage the reader for further reflection on the issue of the mechanism of human behavior and may be very helpful in creating ethical attitudes of employees, and as a consequence may have a positive impact on the functioning of modern enterprises. Originality/value: An innovative aspect of these considerations is the change in the perception of an employee as a work subject from an only economic to axiological perspective and an indication of those actions of the managerial staff that will allow employees to identify with the organization in terms of the professed value system.

Opis:
Purpose: In the literature relatively little attention is paid to the project manager’s background, i.e., to the importance of whether the project manager is a line manager, a line employee of the organisation in question who is no one’s supervisor or whether the project manager is involved solely in project management. The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of how the type of project manager is related to project success. Design/methodology/approach: The research hypothesis was formulated and the results of the empirical studies were presented. The empirical verification of the research hypothesis was accomplished through survey research in Europe and USA. Findings: Based on the empirical data obtained, it was concluded that in terms of all three project parameters (scope, time and cost), the project manager, who is also a line manager, was the most successful. The empirical research indicated a possible relationship between project manager type and project success. Research limitations/implications: In the analysis, it should be borne in mind that there are other several internal and external factors responsible for potential problems in meeting the project scope, schedule and budget. Practical implications: Project management by line managers can be a sound basis for the interaction of processes and projects, manifesting itself, for example, in the transfer of knowledge between processes and projects during the activity of solving problems, especially those lying at the interface of one type of activity and another. Originality/value: The results obtained should draw attention to the need to complement previous research characterising the ideal or effective project manager with a new variable, the type of project manager.

Purpose: To identify the duties and responsibilities of project managers by analysing the content of online job advertisements. Design/methodology/approach: Job advertisements were automatically downloaded for 63 countries/areas available on Indeed. A text mining analysis of fragments of the advertisements describing the scope of duties was carried out. The text mining analysis included initial text processing, creating corpora of the documents, creating a document-term matrix, and using classic methods derived from data mining. Findings: The research established the most frequently used words and n-grams in job advertisements. They have been presented in the form of figures. The 2-grams are also presented in the form of a net, a directed graph. The LDA algorithm identified abstract topics describing the duties and responsibilities of project managers. The most frequent words, n-grams, and topics identified by the LDA algorithm were used to identify the duties and responsibilities of project managers. Research limitations/implications: Only job advertisements written in English were analysed. The postings were downloaded only for six days. An attempt to automatically identify the responsibilities section did not yield the expected results. Therefore, it was carried out manually for random advertisements, which reduced the number of analysed documents. The content of the job advertisements was not analysed by country/area. Practical implications: The method applied can be used by organisations training future project managers, to modify and better adapt curricula to the needs of the labour market. Originality/value: Studies have shown that text mining of job advertisements can help determine the duties and responsibilities of project managers.

Purpose: The goal of the study was to examine project managers ability to apply different styles of leadership depending on the project situation. Design/methodology/approach: LEAD-Self questionnaires were used as the main research tool, which is based on the Model of Situational Leadership by P. Hersey and K. Blanchard. The tests were carried out in 12 production plants located in Poland, Italy, Spain, Turkey and China. The plants produce parts for household appliances, automotive and HVAC industries as well as intelligent power grids. 45 project managers participated in the study. Findings: Research results indicate that project managers have a wide range of styles, yet their adaptability is low and moderate level. None of the surveyed project managers has a high level of adaptation. This means that the project managers participating in the study use only the basic leadership style and only occasionally use supporting styles. Practical implications: Implications for organizations and project managers are given in the publication. The most important of them is training project managers in the field of situational leadership model and making managers aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each style, so that they are able to adapt them to the situation and to be ready to act by individual team members. Originality/value: The publication refers to the issue of situational leadership in the context of project management, which broadens the knowledge of human resource management in project management, and highlights the importance of adapting the leadership style of a project manager to a specific situation. The publication can be valuable for organizations implementing industrial projects and for project managers themselves.

Purpose: Change is nowadays becoming an intrinsic part of any organization’s functioning. The concept of a learning organization that can meet the requirements of the VUCA principle is already common in literature. Since organizations are made up of people led by a leader/manager, thus requiring personal ability to deal with emerging problems. The aim of this paper is to present theoretical considerations and research analysis justifying its thesis that the diversity of a leader’s competencies significantly affects the effectiveness of management and ultimately determines their organization’s success. Design/methodology/approach: The aim of this paper was achieved by conducting an argumentative review of the literature available on the subject, which served as the basis for designing the methodological assumptions and further research. Survey methodology was selected as the main research method. The research was conducted among managers/leaders of a group of selected building materials companies. Such targeted research allowed for proper understanding of respondents’ position in relation to the subject matter and made it possible to draw conclusions. Findings: The conducted research leads to the conclusion that the variety and universality of a leader’s competencies affect the effectiveness of managing a team. The research has resulted in a proposal of a competency model of a modern manager able to effectively manage a company. The model considers the leading competencies as the basis for the proposed spectrum of skills. The leading competencies determining a manager’s actions and allow for the emphasis of the multidirectional nature of the desired features include self-organization, self-improvement, openness to new ideas, strict principles, making correct decisions, and taking care of the team’s relations and environment. The above-listed competencies can be used to generate further skills and traits, which can be used to create a complete competency model of an effective manager. Practical implications: The results of the conducted research and the proposed competency model constitute a valuable source of information for those responsible for managing a team in a difficult VUCA environment. The proposed approach to managerial competencies and in particular to their diversity will contribute to managers’ effectiveness and flexibility. Originality/value: The assumed research position pertains to learning organizations operating in dynamic environments. The key role in such an organization is played by a manager able to not only keep up with the changing conditions, but also anticipate them. The authors of this paper propose a model allowing managers/leaders to learn and evolve in response to emerging challenges, thus ensuring their company’s effectiveness.

Purpose: The growing complexity of the environment in which they operate causes modern enterprises, including various types of organizations, to develop competitive management models aimed at meeting the expectations of various groups of stakeholders involved in their activitiesin the long-term perspective. This article focuses on the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the activities of the municipal housing manager in the context of its stakeholders. The study examines how stakeholders (employees, resource residents, entrepreneurs) perceive the city's housing manager's CSR activities. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, in addition to the analysis of the literature on the subject, the results of the survey conducted in the first and second quarter of 2022 among 363 stakeholders of the municipal housing manager were used. In the study, the impartiality test χ2 and the coefficient of T Czuprow convergence were used, with the significance level α = 0.05. Findings: The results suggest that each of the three selected groups of stakeholders perceive the necessity of CSR activities differently. The group that is the most interested in such activities are employees, the inhabitants of resources expect only actions aiming to improve the quality of their lives, and therefore actions within the aspect of local responsibility. Entrepreneurs in turn, are interested in activities in the social, external and environmental aspects. In addition, the results of these studies may contribute to the state of knowledge in the scientific literature by pointing to the importance of CSR activities by entities not focused on maximizing profits. Originality/value: It can be expected that the developed models will help decision makers of city housing managers to gain a perception of the stakeholder's awareness of and attitudes towards the CSR concept.
