Opis:
In his article the author analyses the accuracy of objects which are situated on the sea. Research on selected objects has been carried out in the Vessel Traffic Service covering the Gulf of Gdansk. The author compares positions of those objects on the basis of VTS and DGPS readings.

Opis:
Shoreline mapping is one of the key stages in navigational charting. In terms of navigation, the shoreline marks the boundary of a river, which is often equivalent to the navigable water area. In cartographic terms, it is an important topological element between different objects that are adjacent to it. Currently, topographic objects are often mapped using photogrammetric materials obtained from various altitudes – satellite, airborne or low, which is associated with the use of an airborne UAV. Depending on the type of materials, the shoreline can be obtained in vector form with differing situational accuracy and differing degree of detail. In addition to the standard methods of processing vector data, the research in this paper also included the use of sonar images, enabling the detection of the shoreline with the use of a surveying hydrographic unit. On the basis of the collected photogrammetric and sonar images of different spatial resolution, an analysis of the accuracy of shoreline mapping was performed in terms of the situational accuracy and the level of detail in its representation. The results of the research provided the basis for the determination of dedicated remote sensing materials enabling the development of maps for inland navigation.

Opis:
Preliminary outcome of the tests of laser distance measurement modules being a part of the PNDS system (Pilot Navigation & Docking System) developed within the OPIE project (Operational Programme Innovative Economy) in Maritime University in Szczecin are presented in the article. The tests were carried out in laboratory conditions and the actual conditions which may occur during the system’s operation. The modules of the digital laser distance meters available on civilian market were compared. Statistical analysis comparing the accuracy of the laser distance meters was presented and based on it, their general effectiveness was evaluated making part of the preliminary prototype of the PNDS system.

Opis:
This article examines the current state of practices concerning the monitoring of the accuracy and reliability of compasses on modern ships in the global fleet. The author analyzes personally detected, bizarre, but commonly used practices that may indirectly lead to hazards to human life, and impose a serious risk of marine environmental pollution. The author indicates probable reasons for the present state, and proposes directions, resources and methods for rectifying the situation. The problems presented, which represent the results of a broad study, call for decisive solutions in such areas as technology, education, law, and morality.

Opis:
The shoreline is an important geographical zone, and knowledge of its accurate location can be crucial for coastal management and mapping. The ever-increasing number of aerial and satellite sensors is leading to research related to the development of new methods for the automatic extraction of the shoreline. Currently, there is a lot of research in this area with different research methodologies. In this paper, an analysis of shoreline extraction methods was carried out. Based on the analysis undertaken, current research processes in this field can be verified. This enabled the further evaluation of the research methodologies studied, including the identification of basic assessment elements for shoreline extraction accuracy. Practical aspects of this work include the ability to establish the correct methods to assess the accuracy of extracted shorelines for both research and production processes related to data extracted from remotely sensed images.

Opis:
Computer simulations used for predicting the behavior of oil spills at sea allow optimizing the deployment of oil spill response personnel and resources, and using the backtracking method to identify the polluter in cases where spills are sighted some time after they occurred. Predicting the direction and speed of oil slick spreading is of fundamental importance. An attempt was made to verify the influence of selected simulation parameters, related to hydrometeorological conditions, on the behavior of the resulting oil pollution. Different responses were obtained under the same simulated weather conditions, depending on the type of spilled oil. The experiment was conducted on a PISCES II oil spill simulator.
