Medieval German literature, Poland, presence and future of early German literature, academic curricula
Opis:
The German literary heritage from the period between Middle Ages and Modern Times (8th-17th cc.) has an unquestionably high status in German Studies in the German-speaking countries. Hence, German Medieval Studies are widely acknowledged as an indisputably vital research domain. Austrian, German and Swiss academic institutions recognize German Medieval Studies as one of the three main autonomous components in German Studies – the other two being modern German Literature and Linguistics. This division is also mirrored in the academic curricula and the regulations concerning the scope of academic examinations. German Medieval Studies have a completely different status in countries other than the above, including Poland. In Poland, there can be no mention of institutional equality between the three components listed above. As can be inferred from the changes affecting the majority of programmes offered by the Institutes of German all around Poland, academic curricula seem to increasingly marginalize the early German literary legacy. The knowledge about the Medieval, Modern or Baroque texts is presented mostly, and sometimes exclusively, through curricular lectures. In some academic programmes, literature starts with the 18th century texts onward. This marginalized status of German Medieval Studies in the Polish Academia manifests itself correspondingly in the two branches of research: specializations and publications. Drawing upon the relevant German and English-language literature, the author of this paper would like to convince the Polish milieus of the specialists in German Studies of how important Old German literature is. The author also puts forward a postulate that in both the scientific and the didactic discourse within German Studies, the early German literary legacy should be given the position it rightly deserves.

Nelly Sachs, Rosi Wosk's collection, German Literature Archive in Marbach
Opis:
In the footsteps of Nelly Sachs. Rosi Wosk's collection in the German Literature Archive in MarbachRosi Wosk, née Press, was a Hungarian Jew, a survivor of the Holocaust, who was transported in one of the white buses to Sweden after the liberation. She lived with her husband, Henry Wosk, a Polish Jew, and their son in Stockholm in an apartment next to Nelly Sachs, a German Jewish Nobel Prize winner poet from Berlin. Over time the two women became friends and Rosi Wosk became a kind of personal assistant and housekeeper. Nelly Sachs entrusted all her treasures from the past to Rosi Wosk. The treasures included her last will and testament, letters, postcards, photographs, manuscripts, a hand-made album, drawings of flowers, prewar newspaper cuttings with poems, notes from Sachs' stay in a psychiatric hospital, and small scraps of paper with shopping lists or things-to-do lists for the housekeeper, collected by Rosi Wosk. The collection also contains four notebooks with Rosi Wosk's notes in Hungarian, German and Swedish in which she describes meetings and conversations with Nelly Sachs. On the one hand, the content of the three notebooks expresses Wosk's sympathy with Sachs' suffering, friendship, love and helpfulness, and on the other hand, fatigue, exhaustion and helplessness. It would be worth asking why and for whom Nelly Sachs' neighbour made notes in a language which she had only basic knowledge of. Rosi Wosk's collection wasn't purchased from her son, Bertil Wosk, until 2007 by the German Literature Archive in Marbach.

Jürgen Fuchs (1950–1999) was born in the GDR and was a writer, journalist, essayist, peace movement activist and psychologist. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 Fuchs was the most important author living in the forced emigration. In 1976 Fuchs was arrested by the Ministry for State Security. The reason for prosecution was political. The government deprived of his citizenship and send him to the West Germany. The basis of the exile was connected with long conflict between authorities and Fuchs litetature. The article shows the biography, creation and political activity of J. Fuchs who was known in the 21st century mainly as a dissident and political author meanwhile he was a writer focused on GDR and the settlement with German dictatorship. This contribution explains the reason of difficult reception of his heritage and encourages the thinking about East Germany legacy.

Opis:
The number of migrants in contemporary Germany is constantly growing. There are also increasing problems arising as a result of cultural differences between the immigrants and the local population and also due to different habits of both groups. These differences, foreign traditions and their perception in Germany seem to be important topics from viewpoint of cultural studies not only for scientist, but also for students of German Studies, especially if the customs and forms of life become the subject of literature. In the following article the authoress is trying to bring near some of the main cultural differences between migrants and the local community depicted in the literature. To achieve this goal she analyses selected texts of German writers of Turkish origin. She also makes an attempt at answering the question whether and to what extent such a kind of literature can be useful for the audience outside Germany.
