Opis:
The revelations of the historiography concerning sport in the period of the Weimar Republic should be considered one of the most essential phenomena in the area of historical science in the Federal Republic of Germany during the last twenty years. The process takes place mainly thanks to the determination and consistence of sport historians coming from western lands. The Germans were among the most active sportsmen in the world. Part of the world of the physical activity was the German Football Association (Deutscher Fussball Bund – DFB). In the 1920s it belonged to the most powerful football federations in the world. In the period of the Weimar Republic it enjoyed a golden age. In each political system in Germany (the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Federal Republic) the football federation did very well. After the war, the period of the so called “fascist football” was not spoken about until the beginning of the 1980s. It was then that the crystal façade of the DFB was destroyed. It resulted from intensive debates conducted in Germany at that time which concerned the role of the world of physical activity. The attitude of the management of the association was particularly controversial. Having been denazificated many activists of the DFB felt powerful in the Federal Republic and wanted to return to their pre-war activity. The research conducted in the partly destroyed archives of the DFB revealed the real image of the management of the association which had been hitherto treated with piety. The aim of the article is to outline the main tendencies of historiographic debates about football – one of the biggest phenomena of mass culture in the first four decades of the 20th century – along with the most important football institution – the German Football Association (Deutscher Fussball Bund – DFB). The author devotes particular emphasis to Nazism and the professionalism of the footballers.

Opis:
Racial, national and Germanization policies of the Third Reich, as well as resettlement activities are well described in the literature, but mainly in terms of general statistics. However, there is no detailed information on the camps themselves. Archival material constituting documentation of camp activities has not survived in most cases, but research opportunities are provided by the surviving parish register entries in register offices, which are gradually becoming available to researchers. Out of 26 camps in the Pomeranian province (Gau Pommern), the camp in Złotów (German Flatow) has been selected for the purpose of analysing the surviving parish register entries: births, marriages and deaths at the local register office. The entries included the names of 191 persons who stayed in the Złotów camp (Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle-Lager “Generalfeldmarschall Graf von Roon” Flatow). These sources revealed several aspects of living inside the camp and showed problems that the Lithuanian resettlers faced, usually without sufficient knowledge of the German language. These included complete isolation, restriction of their life space to the camp area, lack of clearly defined prospects, and a radical change in the German resettlement policy, which for the camp residents meant returning to Lithuania, yet not to their former homes, but to areas indicated by the German occupation administration.

Opis:
The history of the Nazi camp in Bogusze was initially documented during the Polish People’s Republic period, a time marked by limited research opportunities and constraints put on memory policy. The camp’s history was altered through the process of remembrance formation instituted by the Polish Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy. In the 1960s, a legend emerged surrounding the alleged execution of Italian prisoners of war held at the camp in Bogusze, and a guerrilla ambush of SS soldiers near the town of Ełk. This narrative first appeared in the verification documents of Władysław Świacki and Czesław Nalborski in 1964, gaining prominence through the literary work of Aleksander Omiljanowicz, published in 1965. This legend found its way into numerous scholarly publications, resulting in a distorted representation of the camp’s history. The absence of comprehensive source research perpetuated false narratives concerning the period of the camp’s existence, its names, size, and the identity and number of its victims. To address this, the author of this article conducted archival and source research to verify various episodes in the camp’s history. The camp in Bogusze existed from 1941 to 1944 and experienced a series of name and purpose changes. From June 1941 to June 1942, it was known as Oflag 56 and hosted Soviet POWs; from July 1942 to November 1942, it was still used to detain Soviet POWs under the name Stalag I E; and from 2 November 1942 to 3 January 1943, Polish Jews were held in the camp, which was then referred to as Sammellager. From January 1943 to May 1944, the camp in Bogusze was again used to detain Soviet POWs, this time under the name Stalag I F/Z Prostken. Additionally, the camp, referred to as Stalag I B/PR, was used to hold interned Italians between September 1943 and May 1944. In January and February 1944, Volksdeutsche evacuated from Ukraine were hosted in Lager Bogusche, and Polish residents of frontline villages and towns were held at Stalag 373 from May to December 1944. At its peak, the camp encompassed an area of 30 hectares. Post-war investigations suggest that approximately 25,000 individuals may be buried in the camp’s cemetery and execution site.

Opis:
At the beginning of the German occupation in the territories incorporated into the Third Reich all the Polish orphanages and childcare centres became administered by the German authorities. It was in accordance with the incentives included in the book prepared by the Political-Racial Bureau in November 1939 titled The question of the treatment of the population from the former Polish territories from the racial-political point of view, which recommended that racially valuable children should be exempted from resettlements and should be brought up in the Reich in special educational centres which followed the model of the House of Orphans in Potsdam. On 9 September 1939 Wejherowo was taken over by German soldiers from the 207th Infantry Division of Tiedemann, the 32nd Regiment of Grenzwache von Bothmer, the SS Battalion – Heimwehr Danzig of Major von Rittberg and the 5th Cavalry Regiment of Diener. The Wejherowo land became part of the Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia. The occupying forces took over the buildings of the pre-war Centre for Social Care and the Primary School for the Deaf and Mute in Wejherowo, which are now situated at 279 Jana Sobieskiego street (at that time: Adolf-Hitler-Strasse). The buildings served as accommodation for the military units. Buildings no. 2 and no.4 along with the farm were not utilised. The German administration set up the Educational Centre called “Erziehungsanstalt Neustadt” for Polish and German boys aged 4 to 16 in the dormitory and school buildings. Polish children came from the territories of the former Pomeranian province – Bydgoszcz, Grudziądz, Toruń, Gdynia, Starogard Gdański and Kartuzy. The number of children of Polish nationality who stayed in the educational centre in Wejherowo amounted to 101 boys 9 according to the data of 31 April 1940). During their stay in the centre in Wejherowo boys were supervised by German teachers or local Kashubians. From time to time children were sent to nearby farms to help in agricultural works. In 1943 the decision was made to liquidate the centre gradually. Thirtyone boys were transported to the camp for children in Łodź in Przemysłowa street. During the evacuation of the centre some children escaped to their family homes. The remaining children were placed by the Polish authorities in childcare centres as victims of the war. Once their identity had been established, they were sent to their family homes. Orphans were placed in orphanages and childcare centres.

Opis:
As a result of WWI Prussia as an element of united Germany lost part of its Baltic provinces for the benefit of the restored Polish and Lithuanian states. Within the boundaries of the German federation there remained the following Baltic provinces: Pomerania, East Prussia and the Frontier March. The organization of the general and local administration in the provinces constituted the continuation of the hitherto applied structures stemming from the reforms by Stein-Hardenberg. The most important change, along with the introduction of the republican political system was the implementation of the democratic election procedures to the local authorities and the elimination of courtly districts in 1928. Moreover, there took place changes in the special administration, e.g fiscal administration, which became the prerogative of the central authorities in Germany. In the provinces new structures were created for it. Important modifications of the organization of the administration started in 1933 when the Nazis took over the power. The administration underwent the so called Gleichschachtung and was subjugated to the authority of Hitler’s party. The most far reaching changes were introduced in the political system of rural and municipal communes, which dated back to the beginning of the 19th century. It was replaced by the new legal rules of the organization of rural and municipal communes in the years 1933 and 1935. WWII did not change much in the structures. During the war Hitler’s authorities underlined the hegemony of the Nazi party over the German state and society including the Baltic provinces.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at addressing the question of the Prussian State’s involvement in the economy during the interwar period, as it was first one of the constituent states of the Weimar Republic and then a part of the Third Reich. After the First World War, the economic and social problems of Prussia resulted from the general difficult situation of Germany. However, Prussia in particular suffered serious territorial losses in the east of the country. Many petitions and requests demanding the state’s active involvement in solving economic and socio-demographic problems were addressed to the Prussian government. A very important premise for this involvement was the political motivation and willingness to solve the ongoing problems indicated by the economic sector and local administration. The investment of the state’s financial resources into the Port of Szczecin and the establishment of the Port Community of Szczecin was conditioned, on the one hand, by the failure of negotiations with the City-State of Hamburg to establish a similar port community. On the other hand, it stressed the importance that the Port of Szczecin acquired during the First World War. As a result of the Prussian State’s involvement, investments of at least several million marks worth were made in the port. The change in the form of cooperation between the state and the City of Szczecin in terms of managing the port, which took place in 1929, led to the creation of the Port Company in Szczecin. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the amount of funds that the Prussian State allocated to the Port of Szczecin was limited. During the Nazi period, some more costly investment projects in the Port of Szczecin were drafted but they were never implemented.
