Opis:
According to the scholarly literature on the cartography of the former Duchy of Pomerania, the map of this region prepared by Eilhard Lubinus, a scholar from the University of Rostock, had two editions: the first from 1618 and the second from 1758. This article presents a more detailed analysis of the preserved documents relevant for this topic: the correspondence of the author of the map and his patron, the Duke of Pomerania Philip II, as well as subsequent letters concerning the inheritance after Lubinus’s death. This investigation allowed to put forward a hypothesis that there were actually three editions. Apart from the two editions mentioned above, one more from the turn of 1620, financed by Lubinus himself, should be added. This conclusion is enhanced by the results of research carried out during conservation works on a copy of the map currently stored in the Main Library of the University of Szczecin. The research revealed that the paper used to print the map came neither from the paper mill of Pomeranian dukes, as in the 1618 edition, nor from the paper mill of Joseph Anton Unold of Wolfegg, as in the 1758 edition.

Opis:
The text is an analysis of the socio-political situation in Western Pomerania during the political crisis in the Polish People’s Republic at the turn of 1971. Szczecin lay in the heart of the workers’ protests, however, it was the events in Gdańsk that received the most spotlight at that time and later on. The article aims to gather and analyse information from primary sources on how the inhabitants of the country learned about social unrest in big cities, how they interpreted and commented on it, and how it all translated into social sentiments. Such an approach to the problem also provides an opportunity to carry out an analysis based on the dichotomy between the ‘core’ and ‘peripheral’ areas. This is possible due to the accessibility of appropriate primary sources, which in the examined cases are constituted mostly by the documentation gathered by the Security Service, so far used to a small extent. It should also be stressed that the documents on the events of December 1970 in the context of the country in Western Pomerania were rather scant. The analysis of the documentation demonstrates how important Szczecin and Gdańsk were for social sentiments in 1970 and 1971. The incidents in ‘core’ cities were closely observed, and the patterns of protesting were then copied by the country. The scale of those ‘peripheral’ protests was smaller, and they usually did not turn into street fights, but their impact was felt, heard and seen. The methods of protesting in the country involved distributing leaflets, making inscriptions, conversing on related topics and, above all, sharing a desire to bring about a socio-political change expressed by strikes and public protests. These occurrences showed how much the ‘peripheral’ areas were inspired by the ‘core’ ones. There is no doubt that December 1970 left a lasting mark on the memory of the inhabitants of the country in Western Pomerania.

Opis:
Half a century after the first crusade, the fall of the County of Edessa (1144) became an impulse for the second crusade. During the announcement of the crusade in the German territories, an alternative project of an expedition against pagan Polabian Slavs was created. It had a much more limited range and it was carried out in the summer of 1147. The Saxon troops took part in it, under the commandment of the Saxon duke Henry the Lion, the Margrave of the Northern March Albert the Bear, Archbishop Frederick of Magdeburg and Bishop Anselm of Havelberg. Danish, Burgundian, Moravian and Polish military units cooperated with them. One of the crusade armies, fighting with the Lutici, came to Szczecin. The army withdrew from there after the arrangement with the Pomeranian bishop Adalbert (=Wojciech?) and the Duke of Pomerania Ratibor. The only source discussing this episode is the account of the Bohemian chronicler Vincent of Prague, for whom the Bishop of Moravia Henryk Zdík, one of the leaders of the crusade, was probably the source of information. The aim of the article is to analyse this account – first of all, to show the role played by the figures of the Saxon bishops and the Pomeranian bishop in Vincent’s narrative. The article draws attention to the supposed reasons for their being displayed at the expense of the wealthy laity: it is the social identity of the chronicler, but above all the image of the confrontation of bishops as a clash of different approaches to Christianity existing in the Church. In comparison with the curt account of Annales Magdeburgenses about Ratibor’s commitment to support Christianity (1148), the significance of the figure of Saint Otto of Bamberg as a pioneer of the Christianization of Pomerania is underlined. Next, some of Vincent’s statements are exposed in the context of criticizing the unsuccessful Levant crusade in order to capture narrative patterns. Another motif is the exhibition of crosses as a manifestation of the Christian faith. The exposal of the symbol of the cross by the inhabitants of Szczecin, bearing the marks of a war trick – the crusaders themselves used this sign – is also juxtaposed with the display of the banner of Svetovit in Arkona besieged by the Danes (1168). It could also be used to get Christians’ God to restore peace. The second sign of the Christian character of the place is the very presence of the clergy in the person of Bishop Adalbert.
