Opis:
The Tuba Dei bell from the tower of St. Johns’ Church, the present-day Cathedral Basilica in Toruń, is one of the largest bells in Poland. It is also one of Toruń’s most important monuments and symbols of the city. It has attracted the interest of researchers not only on account of its uniqueness, but also because of the ongoing dispute regarding the date it was cast. This paper presents a voice in the discussion regarding the dating of the Tuba Dei bell of Toruń. Source literature has accepted the suggestions of the year 1500 or 1522 and various daily dates, and the discrepancies were based on different ways of reading and interpreting the inscription on the bell. The article is an attempt to verify the hypotheses accepted so far based on written sources that have not been included in the findings. In the course of researching medieval accounts of Toruń churches, the authors found information indicating the date the bell was cast. The St. John’s Church account book from 1520–1553 contains data that clearly establishes it as 27 September 1522.

Opis:
This article places into a broader scope of the research over the image of Gdańsk and its inhabitants in chronicles that are carried out by the authoress. It deals with the analysis of the historiographical sources originating from beyond Gdańsk. The majority of chronicles’ excerpts dedicated to Gdańsk deals with its political and trade activity. The authoress is particularly interested in the criteria, put forward by the chroniclers from 15th to 16th c., which decided on Gdańsk’s urban character, or indicated its value as a city and made it worth a visit. It was a period of intense development of this centre. The purpose of the analyses is to, i.a., check whether the contemporary chroniclers observed these changes and how they evaluated them. The issue has not yet been addressed in the literature of the subject. The analyses, referring to Hans Werner-Goetz’s methodology concerning the representations in chronicles (so-called Vorstellungsgeschichte), were carried out on various chronicles, relations and records, i.a. travel records (Gilbert de Lannoy and Mikołaj Wimann), Polish chronicles (Annales by Jan Długosz, chronicles by Bernard Wapowski, Joachim Bielski, Polonia by Marcin Kromer), foreign chronicles Germania by Eneas Silvius Piccolomini, Wandalia by Albert Krantz), or universal chronicles (Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster). The analysis shows that in the first half of the 15th century the contemporaneous authors did not stand out of other towns in the region (Jan Długosz, Gilbert de Lannoy, Eneas Silvius Piccolomini). Their assessment was made while they pondered on the city’s fortifications, geographical location and building material. It was not until the Thirteen Years War (1454–1466) and subsequent expansion of the city that the chronicles of the 16th c. noticed the ongoing change (especially Albrecht Krantz and Sebastian Münster). They described the “civilizational leap” that took place in Gdańsk in short time, namely during the life of one man. In their opinion, the changes were particularly noticeable in the fast pace of replacing wooden buildings with brick ones. The image of Gdańsk in the foreign chronicles does not contain elements of the descriptions of the city characteristic of Gdańsk records, which the authoress analyzed elsewhere – there are no references to specific buildings, streets and squares, that is, the living space of the city’s inhabitants.

Opis:
This article focuses on King John Albert’s visit to Elbląg, Malbork, and Toruń during his trip to Royal Prussia in 1494–1495. The visit to Elbląg has received minimal attention in historiography, as the primary purpose of the event was to accept the oath of allegiance. Thorough research reveals that John I Albert stayed in Elbląg from 21–28 December 1494 to partake in the Christmas festivities. During this period, the city served as the seat of the Crown’s court. The source base for the article is comprised of royal accounts kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records, which contain lists of John Albert’s court expenses for this trip. The article also highlights the arrival of an envoy from Stephen, Voivode of Moldavia and a legation from Margrave Frederick Hohenzollern, along with other ceremonies and feasts held at the court. Notably, the lists of expenses provide insights into the city’s responsibility for supplying the monarch’s kitchen, table, and horse fodder. This visit stands out as the longest recorded royal visit in Elbląg’s history.

Opis:
Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758–1841) was a poet, playwright, novelist, historian, diarist, journalist, translator and politician. He circulated in culturally and politically significant entourages such as the court of the Czartoryski family and King Stanisław August Poniatowski, the societies of pre-revolutionary France; he was an adjutant and a personal secretary of Tadeusz Kościuszko; he was also acquainted with George Washington. During his life he carried out many long trips to various European countries; he lived in the USA for over 8 years. Fortunately for his descendants, he wrote "Pamiętniki czasów moich" [English: Memoirs of my times] which, along with "Podróże po Ameryce 1797–1807" [English: Travels throughout America 1797–1807], constitute a basic source for this article. His diary is the first extensive description of the USA from the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries based on the personal observations of the author. A closer analysis of this rich source material allows us to reconstruct the outlines of the image of the new state in America created in the mind of this outstanding representative of Polish culture. The source research conducted here is of an exploratory nature. The work includes quotations from the writer’s diary following the rule of pars pro toto. As a result, the work constitutes merely an outline of the problem included in the title; it requires further research to be subsequently presented in a monograph, which would take into account all the cultural background of the Polish ideas concerning the USA in the 18th–19th centuries.
