Opis:
The revelations of the historiography concerning sport in the period of the Weimar Republic should be considered one of the most essential phenomena in the area of historical science in the Federal Republic of Germany during the last twenty years. The process takes place mainly thanks to the determination and consistence of sport historians coming from western lands. The Germans were among the most active sportsmen in the world. Part of the world of the physical activity was the German Football Association (Deutscher Fussball Bund – DFB). In the 1920s it belonged to the most powerful football federations in the world. In the period of the Weimar Republic it enjoyed a golden age. In each political system in Germany (the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Federal Republic) the football federation did very well. After the war, the period of the so called “fascist football” was not spoken about until the beginning of the 1980s. It was then that the crystal façade of the DFB was destroyed. It resulted from intensive debates conducted in Germany at that time which concerned the role of the world of physical activity. The attitude of the management of the association was particularly controversial. Having been denazificated many activists of the DFB felt powerful in the Federal Republic and wanted to return to their pre-war activity. The research conducted in the partly destroyed archives of the DFB revealed the real image of the management of the association which had been hitherto treated with piety. The aim of the article is to outline the main tendencies of historiographic debates about football – one of the biggest phenomena of mass culture in the first four decades of the 20th century – along with the most important football institution – the German Football Association (Deutscher Fussball Bund – DFB). The author devotes particular emphasis to Nazism and the professionalism of the footballers.
