    In the Stalinist period (1948-1956) new challenges appeared in the work of Polish librarians. One of them was work competition, considered an ideal way of supporting the build¬ing of socialism. The next one service for new groups of readers, i.e. peasants and workers, who had to be provided with an ideological book to understand and accept the new system, and professional, to contribute to the economic development of the country. These tasks required rigorous control of lending and selection of book collections. In the journals, published by the Związek Bibliotekarzy i Archiwistów Polskich – “Przegląd Biblioteczny”, “Bibliotekarz” and “Poradnik Bibliotekarza” – you can find various materials to help librarians carry out new tasks.

    In the interwar period about 50 different types of guides for librarians and bookselling guides were published in Poland. Many of them contained mainly advices on setting up libraries, organizing them and gathering collections, but both types contained information on selection of books in terms of their educational function. 1) The aim of the research is the presentation of selected guides issued in Poland in 1918-1939, which were addressed to employees of various types of libraries: public, school, parish, home, etc. and their lists of books and recommendations depending on the targeted reader. 2) Materials and methods: selection of guides, comparative method, literature analysis, bibliographic method. 3) Applications are the answers to the following questions: Were the reading recommendations in the analyzed manuals addressed only to the book professionals, as an aid in completing book collections and making reading choices, or to the readers as well? Which educational models were most important, to what extent they referred to the curricula in schools? Whether censorship was taking place (they included titles that should not be read), etc.?

    The article aims at the presentation of the origins and beginnings of reading rooms: Italian, Austrian and French in the People’s Republic of Poland until the end of the 60s of the 20th century, in a broader context of bilateral relations of Poland with France, Italy, and Austria. That enabled the determination of controversial issues restraining a process of establishing these units, as well as historical context influencing this process. The findings were based on archival source materials and a few research studies.

    Opis:
    Magdalena Morska, the owner of the Zarzecze residence, where she created a sentimental-romantic park and garden was a Polish aristocrat and keen organizer of cultural life in Galicia province of Poland. She donated a collection of 358 titles of books and periodicals in 1228 volumes to the Ossolineum Library in 1847. They were mostly books in French published between 1785-1835. In the article an overview of this collection is given. The collection consists mostly of belles-lettres, historical and political works. Also books on geography, especially itinerary accounts are vastly represented, as well as philosophy, including leading authors of European Enlightenment, books on art, poetry, drama, works on botanic and gardening. In Morska’s library there were also volumes of typically women’s literature of the period: romances, moralizing literature, educational books, language dictionaries and grammar manuals. In spite of a substantial book collection of count Morska, there was no separate library room in the Zarzecze palace.

    The article discusses activities of two Reading Rooms which were created in the milieu of the progressive Jews in Krakow, Galicia in the 19th century: The Israelite Reading Room (1871) and The Reading Room of the Jewish Merchant Youth (1882). Both Reading Rooms fostered not only readership but also social integration, education, and became centers of Polish patriotism. They contributed to the development of Jewish publish libraries.

    Opis:
    The subject of the article is the phenomenon of handwritten notes on the pages of old prints. Due to their astonishing variety, these notes constitute source material with great research potential, well beyond the history of reading and the history of the book as such. Using the previous observations obtained in the autopsy research with the use of the provenance method, the author presents a study of three examples and conclusions regarding the types of writing activity of owners and users of an antique book in the context of their individual approach to the book and reading. The issues were presented based on old prints materials from the collections of the Polish Academy of Sciences of the Gdańsk Library, taking into account the methodological issues related to obtaining provenance information from the collection of old prints, which in the discussed aspect are still insufficiently developed source data resources.

    The Days of Culture, Education, Book, and Press (until 1973 – the Days of Education, Book, and Press) in the years 1971-1989 was an annual campaign with goals, agenda, and forms settled by the authorities of the party and the state. Analysis of its program, including anniversaries being celebrated, indicates, that until 1989 they were planned to bring together (adequately interpreted) elements of national tradition and current political goals of the PRP authorities, their ideological, Marxist, „revolutionary” background. Relatively broad acceptance for referring to national past (was it verbal only or actual – to be settled in future research) makes programs of these Days of the 70s and 80s of the 20th century significantly different from those from the Stalinism period. Scale and forms of the events had been evolving, due to social, economic and political changes of that time. The most important and influencing concepts of the Days were: legitimizational concepts of the authorities, activities of political opposition, the „Solidarity” revolution, the martial law, and economic crisis, resulting in difficulties in the book production processes.

    Gimnazjum Mariackie w Szczecinie to jedna z najstarszych szkół średnich w mieście o bogatej historii. Ciekawy nurt w dziejach szkoły reprezentują szkolne koła zainteresowań. Do najstarszych i najliczniejszych należą chóry i zespoły recytatorskie, niektóre z XVIII w. Systematycznie rozwijały się także inne grupy, o określonym profilu i programie. W XIX w. w gimnazjum szczególnie aktywne były towarzystwa czytelnicze (Leseverein). Tradycja tych stowarzyszeń była kontynuowana w XX w. Wpisuje się w szerszy kontekst szczecińskich teatrów szkolnych. Ich działalność można prześledzić na podstawie informacji zawartych w drukowanych sprawozdaniach szkolnych, które podają program zajęć szkolnych kół zainteresowań i określają ich udział w uroczystościach szkolnych. Cennym materiałem są archiwalia przechowywane w Archiwum Państwowym w Szczecinie dotyczące Gimnazjum Mariackiego, w tym dokumenty stworzone przez członków Towarzystwa Czytelniczego.
    St. Mary's Gymnasium in Szczecin, one of the oldest high schools in the city, has a rich history. An interesting trend in the school's history is represented by the school's interest groups. Among the oldest and most numerous are choirs and recitation groups, some dating back to the 18th century. Other groups, with a specific profile and programme, also developed systematically. In the 19th century reading societies (Leseverein) were particularly active in the gymnasium. The tradition of these societies continued into the 20th century. It fits into the broader context of Szczecin's school theatres. Their activities can be traced on the basis of information contained in printed school reports, which give the programme of activities of school interest groups and specify their participation in school calendar celebrations. Valuable material are the archives stored in the State Archives in Szczecin concerning St. Mary's Gymnasium, including documents created by members of the reading society.

    Artykuł przedstawia sytuację bibliotek działających przy miejskich i powiatowych komitetach PZPR woj. warszawskiego (wg podziału administracyjnego obowiązującego w latach 1946-1954), a także wpływ działalności tych placówek na czytelnictwo członków partii. Podstawę źródłową stanowią różnego rodzaju zachowane w Archiwum Akt Nowych dokumenty Komitetu Centralnego PPR (295/VII/84, 295/X/35) oraz akta Warszawskiego Komitetu Wojewódzkiego PZPR (1734) z Archiwum Państwowego Dokumentacji Osobowej i Płacowej. Zachowane dokumenty, które bezpośrednio dotyczą omawianych bibliotek, pochodzą z lat 1946-1954 r. Sieć bibliotek PPR tworzona była od 1946 r. Jako pierwsza powstała już w lutym 1945 r. biblioteka Komitetu Centralnego PPR. Po utworzeniu Polskiej Zjednoczonej Partii Robotniczej biblioteka KC PPR oraz biblioteki terenowe weszły jej w struktury. W 1949 r. zostały przypisane do Ośrodków Propagandy Partyjnej poszczególnych szczebli. W woj. Warszawskim w 1949 r. działało 25 takich bibliotek. Według zachowanych dokumentów placówki te nie wpłynęły zasadniczo na podniesienie poziomu czytelnictwa ani lokalnego aktywu partyjnego, ani szeregowych działaczy. Można wnioskować, że niechęć do spraw bibliotek i czytelnictwa, szczególnie na szczeblu gmin i gromad, wynikająca z niskiego poziomu czytelnictwa działaczy partyjnych, znajdowała odzwierciedlenie w funkcjonowaniu zarówno sieci bibliotek partyjnych, jak i powszechnych. Postawa lokalnych działaczy partyjnych przekładała się na podejmowanie przez władze wielu doraźnych i pozornych działań w zakresie rozwoju czytelnictwa.
    The article presents situation of the libraries of municipal and local PUWP committees of Warsaw Voivodship (according to then administrative division of a country) as well as their infl uence on reading behaviour of party members. Presentation is based on different kind of documents of Central Committee of Polish Workers’ Party (kept in Central Archives of Modern Records 295/VII/84, 295/X/35) and Warsaw Voivodship PUWP Committee (kept in State Archives Documentation Personal and Remuneration, 1734). Preserved documents, which are directly connected with discussed libraries are dated from the period 1946-1954. The network of Polish Workers Party’s (PWP) libraries was created from the year 1946 onward. The library of the Central Committee of PWP was established as the fi rst one as soon as in February 1945. After the Polish United Workers’ Party (PUWP) was started PWP’s Central Committee library and local PWP’s libraries were merged into PUWP’s structures. In the year 1949 they were ascribed to the adequate levels of Centres for Party Propaganda. There were 25 such libraries operating in Warsaw Voivodship. According to preserved documents these libraries brought a rather small contribution to upgrading the readership level neither of local party activist nor of ordinary party members. It might be argued that the aversion against libraries and reading, specifi cally on the commune and district levels, derived from low readership level of the party activists could have transformed onto functioning of party and public libraries. The attitude of local party activists caused many ostensible activities of authorities in the field of reading development.

    Will man den „geistigen Horizonts” unserer Vorfahren historisch erforschen, kann man nach ihrem Buchbesitz fragen: Sag mir was Du liest, und ich sage Dir, wer Du – geistig – bist! Wie erfahren wir, welche Bücher bestimmte Menschen besassen? Insbesondere, wenn diese Menschen nicht jener schreibenden Elite angehörten, die verschiedenste Spuren ihres Lesens und anderer intellektueller Aktivitäten hinterlassen hat. Zum persönlichen Buchbesitz in der Frühen Neuzeit fi nden sich oftmals Informationen in Nachlass- und Versteigerungsinventaren, von denen in verschiedenen Archiven der Schweiz längere Serien existieren, die um die Mitte des 17. oder im frühen 18. Jahrhundert einsetzen. Was man diesen Quellen entziehen kann, sind Listen von Buchtiteln. Will man diese Listen historisch analysieren, muss man aus ihnen – virtuell – Bibliotheken rekonstruieren. Wie werden Bibliotheksrekonstruktionen gemacht? Welche Elemente soll die Rekonstruktion enthalten? Welches Maß an Vollständigkeit bei der Beschreibung der Werke ist erstrebenswert? Wie sollen die Werke angeordnet und wie die Bibliothek dargestellt werden? Neben Forschungsstrategien braucht es auch Forschungstechniken, den Umgang mit einer Anzahl spezifi scher Arbeitsinstrumente. Bibliotheksrekonstruktionen ergeben untereinander vergleichbare Forschungsobjekte, auf die verschiedenste Analyseraster angelegt werden können. Erfolg versprechend scheinen insbesondere Raster zur Analyse des geistigen Horizonts der Buchbesitzer: sei es Menschen aller Art an einem bestimmten Ort, sei es eine bestimmte Kategorie von Menschen – Pfarrherren, Kaufl eute, Handwerker, Adlige, Bauern; Frauen – an verschiedenen Orten.
    Artykuł przedstawia propozycję metodologiczną wykorzystania inwentarzy spuścizn (ruchomości, licytacji) przy rekonstrukcji szwajcarskich bibliotek domowych z XVII-XVIII w. Autor zawarł w nim schemat postępowania badawczego opartego na nieznanych polskim księgoznawcom materiałach źródłowych pochodzących z archiwów kantonów Berno, Vaud, Jura, Neuchâtel i Solothurn. Zawierają one informacje na temat księgozbiorów prywatnych istniejących w badanym okresie zarówno w protestanckich, jak i katolickich, niemiecko- i francuskojęzycznych regionach Szwajcarii, w miastach i na wsi, których właściciele reprezentowali różne warstwy, grupy społeczne i zawody. Autor podkreśla, że rekonstrukcja dawnych bibliotek osobistych (lub prywatnych), ich typologia, liczebność, struktura tematyczna, funkcjonalna, językowa, a także aktualność (z punktu widzenia stosunku ilościowego dzieł starych do nowych) powinna prowadzić do określenia funkcji książki, lektury w życiu ich właścicieli. Umożliwić rozpoznanie ich horyzontów duchowych, zwłaszcza osób, które nie należały do ówczesnej elity umysłowej. Takie badania pozwalają również na uchwycenie tendencji rozwoju intelektualnego i kulturalnego społeczeństw w przeszłości.
    The article presents methodological proposition of using auction lists and inventories of an estate to the reconstruction of 17th-18th centuries’ home libraries. Author proposes the scheme of methodological proceeding relied on source materials unknown to Polish book studies’ scholars and stemmed from the archives of the cantons of Bern, Vaud, Jura, Neuchâtel and Solothurn Stoutt. These archives contain information on private book collections existing in discussed period, both in protestant and catholic retomgions of German- and French language parts of Switzerland, in the rural areas and in the cities, where the owners represented differentiated social milieus, social classes and occupations. Author stresses that reconstruction of personal (or private) libraries, their typology, numeral amount, their thematic, language, functional structure as well as topicality (seen as the balance between older books and newer ones) should lead to defi ning function of the book and reading in everyday life of libraries’ owners. Such a libraries’ reconstruction should also make possible diagnosing their owners’ mindscape, specifi cally persons, who did not belong to intellectual elite of the times. These kind of research enables also to seizing the trends in intellectual and cultural development of the past societies.
