    School libraries in Lviv gymnasiums were treated as an important element of scientific collections and had important didactic functions – as a source of knowledge and a tool for educational influence. Separate libraries for teachers and students existed. The latter were sometimes divided by language (e.g. German, Ukrainian library) or specificity of collections (e.g. library of school textbooks, notes for choral singing). In addition to books, schools also subscribed to numerous magazines for teachers and junior high school students, which were made available in the reading rooms of some libraries. The Lviv gymnasiums acquired an impressive collection of scientific, popular and literature books. The state of student readership was very good.

    Opis:
    The paper begins with the historical facts related to the collection of CyrilloMethodian sources' photocopies in the Scientific Archive of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. It aims at identifying the original manuscript copies of some Prologue Vitaе of Cyril and Methodius whose photocopies were preserved in this archive, at finding out their present location, and at checking the available data about them. Three such manuscripts are located in the National Scientific Library of Ukraine in L'viv, one in the Shevchenko Scientific Society and another one in the holdings of the L'viv National Library. The originals of eight other photocopies, however, have not been located and most probably no longer exist, which makes these photocopies the only evidence at present and thus a precious part of the Slavonic CyrilloMethodian heritage. The author of the article presents all the available information about them and publishes the transcripts of three of these photocopies.

    The article characterizes the informative potential of private correspondence from Wacław Olszewicz (who was a pre-war ministerial clerk, lawyer, economist, diplomat and also a librarian, bibliophile, Polish culture historian and the author of a few dozen articles on bibliology and touring) written from Lviv to his daughter. The analyzed collection consists of 245 letters and postcards sent to his daughter Hanna Szanecka in years 1945-1974. Their lecture reveals information about hte family and the social community of the author, including representatives of the Polish intelligentsia nad their families, which were forced to emigrate by the war. They often were not allowed to come back to the Fatherland in the post-war reality, which was related to difficult life choices.

    This article investigates the problem of spreading of the Protestant ideas in the Basilian monasteries of the Lviv eparchy in the 18th century. How did Reformation reach the Uniate monasteries of the early modern Ukraine? If so, how was it represented? These questions are examining in the paper. It has been studied above 100 book lists of the 30 monasteries from archives mostly in Lviv. Consequently, research found the works of 14 protestants, authors mainly of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. Treatises of the protestants were preserved in four monastery libraries, and also in at least four private Basilian book collections. Research states that Basilians in the Lviv eparchy didn’t know so much about Protestants, at least based on research on the book collections. It looks like that it was on the margins of Basilian intellectual interests. But it is obvious that such study perspective does not allow to fully show the reception of the Protestant tradition.

    Library Collections Manuscripts and printed books have been created, copied and gathered in Poland’s oldest benedictine abbey in Tyniec for centuries. The decision to dissolute the monastery resulted in scattering this rich and unique collection. Some of them were transported to the Lviv University Library in the years 1818-1819, others were destroyed by fire in 1848. Other manuscripts and books were handed down to Tarnów. Part of the University Library’s collection were also transported there. Other documents went to various institutions’ libraries and to private individuals. Remaining catalogues indicate the resource and organisation of the Tyniec library. In the article the the catalogue from the year 1787. Selected manuscripts and books that are to date in Lviv’s archive and libraries were presented.

    The article contains characteristics of incunabula from Vasyl Stefanyk Lviv National Scientific Library of Ukraine (LNSLU) collection. The author provides sources from which the collection of 15th century prints gathered in LNSLU has been obtained: the Ossoliński National Institute, including family deposit collections of the Pawlikowski and Chrzanowski families; the Dzieduszycki family book collection; the library of the People’s House in Lviv including Anton Petrushevich’s collection; the library of Shevchenko Scientific Society; collection of the Byzantine library „Studion” founded by Andrey Sheptytsky, as well as book collections from Basilian monasteries and church libraries. The article describes the history of the dissemination of incunabula in previous centuries, their circulation in the Galician millieu (in the lands under the Austrian partition), gives the names of their owners and characterizes provenance forms.

    Files with materials concerning the Polish publishing market in Lviv in the 19th century are being kept in the W. Stefanyk Lviv National Library. The Ostap Ortwin file (No 73) contains: correspondents of the Bernard Połoniecki Polish Bookstore, and the head of publishing department of this Bookstore. The Ossolineum file No 54: materials concerning the Władysław Bełza’s bookstore. Financial problems of Mikołaj Biernacki, partner of the Polish Bookstore, editor of the „Tydzień Polski” journal (Baworowscy Archive, file no 209, and Pawlikowscy Archive, file no 76). The value of archival sources and their research exploitation.

    The subject of the analysis are archival materials collected in two descriptions, constituting personal matters of employees of the former University of Lviv (Archival description of the 5th team 26 and archival description of the 1st team P-119). Digital copies of these resources are part of the digital GLAM, digital services created at the University of Wrocław, based on the cooperation of various institutions (archives, libraries, museums and archives) that make their digital collections available using a standardized description and presentation. Institutions that are part of GLAM use in the digital space, among others the IIIF standard (International Image Interoperability Framework), a standard that enables dynamic sharing of digitized digital objects, as well as the Virtual Transcription Laboratory (WLT), a cloudbased tool that allows you to create a text layer as a result of automatic recognition (OCR) or by manualy transcription tools. The article presents both tools, intended to create digital text based on scans, which can then be used to prepare digital objects in various standards: eBook, TEI and in others digital scientific tools.

    Opis:
    Jan Smetanski (1881-1959), a Lviv natural historian and a high school teacher, was an avid bibliophile. He assembled a rich collection of 40,000 volumes, which was removed from Lviv after the war and located first in Przemysl and then in Katowice. After the owner died, the collection was dispersed. Some of the books were purchased by the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, a part by the Silesian Library in Katowice, a fragment of the collection remained in the possession of the family. The article discusses a fragment of Jan Smetanski’s collection kept in the collections of the Silesian Library.

    The paper studies the problem of the unification of the liturgical books in the Basilian monasteries of the Lviv eparchy in the second half of the 18th century. Research concentrates on the problem of Zamość council resolution implementation by analyzing the “church books” in the monasteries of Basilians. Investigating the “book lists” from inventory descriptions and protocols of visitations allows to trace changes in the monasteries concerning the “church books” as it was fixed in the documents, a major part of which used for this research are from the Lviv archives. Among the main indicators of a certain liturgical tradition are the texts of the Liturgicon and the Euchologion. In the second half of the 18th century, the presence of Univ and Pochaiv Liturgicon and Euchologion was selective since we do not have data for all decades for all monasteries. At the same time, such an analysis allows tracing a clear tendency – the full-fledged unification of liturgical literature in Basilian monasteries can be noted at the start of the 1760s.

    The Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv
    Opis:
    The Manuscripts and Early Prmted Books Department of The Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv owns the largest in Ukrainę collection of books printed by Francysk Skaryna (1470? - before 29 I 1552), publisher, translator, one of the precursors of the East Slavonic printings. Even though it is the largest Francysk Skaryna’s book collection in Ukrainę, it includes only 21 titles (23 copies in 9 volumes). The article aims to establish the provenance of each copy of Skaryna’s books from the museum collection. The objective of provenance re- search is to tracę the previous ownership history and location of these books. The publication is also focused on explaining and extending some informahon about Skaryna’s books mentioned in museum documents and previous publicahons.

    This article studies the significance of the Polish books in the Basilian monasteries of the Lviv eparchy in the 18th century. During this century the number of the Polish, as well as Latin books were growing. A significant number of Polish books can be analyzed not only as latinisation or polonisation of Basilian monasteries, monks communities of the Eastern-Christian rite on the Ukrainian lands, but as „westernisation” as well. It means absorption of the contemporary Western (Latin) culture by the Polish mediation as the „latinitas polonice”. And it is verified in the most of Basilian monastery libraries of the Lviv eparchy of the 18th century.

    The author’s autographs in the early printed books from the collection of the Vasyl Stefanyk Lviv National Scientific Library of Ukraine can be grouped in two categories. The first one includes author’s signatures, their individual notes concerning the book, amendments and supplements to the text. These materials, quite rare in the books, are of particular importance for the researchers of the history of writing and printing. They can become an authoritative reference for dating, settling authorship of anonymous works, preparations of critical editions. The following authors are mentioned in the text: Mikołaj Bernett (1643-1710), Stanisław Brzeżański (ca 1650-1738), Tadeusz Juda Krusiński (1675-1757), Gottfried Lengnich (16891774), Ignacy Krasicki (1735-1801). The other category of author’s autographs, bigger and as precious as the previous one, includes hand-written author’s dedications. The annex to this text registers 67 Polish dedications from the 16-18th centuries. The following famous persons can be found among authors and recipients: Erazm of Rotterdam, Ercole Sassonia, Martinus Glicius of Pilzno, Andrzej Wolan, and Daniel Mikołajewski.

    Artykuł dotyczy charakterystyki biograficznej i działalności Wacława Olszewicza (1888-1974), prawnika, ekonomisty, działacza gospodarczego, historyka kultury polskiej, bibliotekarza, bibliotekoznawcy, krajoznawcy, działacza PTK. Wspólnie z bratem, Bolesławem, odziedziczył po swoim ojcu, Adolfie Olszewiczu jeden z największych prywatnych księgozbiorów w początkach XX w. w Polsce. W latach dwudziestych i trzydziestych XX w. obok działalności zawodowej na niwie prawa i ekonomii oddał się aktywności społecznej na polu rozwoju bibliotek i bibliotekarstwa. Jego biblioteka w okresie okupacji niemieckiej została częściowo rozproszona, a w przeważającej części – zniszczona przez Niemców. W. Olszewicz wojnę i okres powojenny spędził we Lwowie, gdzie kontynuował swoją pracę z książkami jako bibliotekarz i bibliograf kolejno w Ossolineum, Ukraińskiej Akademii Nauk i Akademii Nauk ZSRR. Utrzymywał kontakty z polskimi naukowcami, publikował swe prace w polskich czasopismach.
    The article concerns biographical characteristics and activities of Wacław Olszewicz (1888-1974) – a lawyer, economist, Polish culture historian, librarian and library scientist, Polish Cultural Association (PTK) activist. Together with his brother Bolesław, he inherited one of the largest private collections in the early twentieth century in Poland from his father, Adolf Olszewicz. In 1920s and 1930s, apart from his professional activities as a lawyer and economist, he devoted himself to community activities in the field of libraries and librarianship development. During the German occupation his library was partially dispersed and most of the collection was destroyed by the Germans. W. Olszewicz spent war and post-war period in Lviv, where he continued his work with books as a librarian and bibliographer in Ossolineum, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He maintained contact with Polish scientists, publishing his works in Polish journals.
