Opis:
The study was conducted to determine the influence of different methods of fertilizer application on the growth of maize (Zea mays L.) at the Teaching and Research Farm, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Cross River University of Technology. Maize seed variety Ikom Local White were treated to one level of NPK (15:15:15) fertilizer (0.128 kg ha-1) and four methods of fertilizer application (Broadcasting, Ring Application, Hole Application and Liquid Application). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The treatments were replicated four times to give a total of sixteen field plots. The result obtained indicated that NPK (15:15:15) significantly (p< 0.05) increase growth parameters (plant height and number of leaves) of maize obtained at 0.128 kg ha-1 and Ring method of application seems appropriate for maize production at 1 m spacing between plants on bed.

Opis:
The study was aimed at determining yield stability and adaptability patterns of a set of 65 open pollinated maize genotypes evaluated across four different agro ecologies in Uganda using 5 × 13 α-lattice design replicated twice. Individual location analysis ANOVA results showed mean squares of genotype were statistically highly significant in terms of days to 50% anthesis, anthesis silking interval, grain yield and maize streak virus disease severity score for all environments tested except for grain yield in Ngetta. The highest grain yield was recorded for topcross C9/TA (ECAVL1/CML536) of 9.60 t ha-1 in Bulindi, for top cross C3/TA (Longe5/CML536) of 9.56 t ha-1 in Namulonge. However, they were quite unstable as their ranking was not consistent across environments. The genotype Ambsyn5, C4/TB, FS85 and C9/TB were showed the lowest disease score for MSV. The parent OPV SITUKA MI was with the lowest day requirement for shading pollen and hence it can be utilized in breeding for earliness. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis results indicated that the tested genotypes were highly influenced by genotype main effects, environment effects and genotype x environment interaction effects; the magnitude of environment and its interaction effect for grain yield was 9.8 times greater than the variation attributed to genotype main effects thus these genotypes were more affected by the environment and their interaction. Based on Finlay and Wilkinson’s sensitivity estimate, genotypes G40, G58, G42, G44, G56, G23, G52 and G53 were identified as the most stable and widely adaptable.

Opis:
From the hands of Olmec, Maya including Inca from whom Corn evolved to all parts of the globe, maize has provided Man with Nutritive, Medical, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Domestic, Economic including Research values. Corn stands at the center of Mankind, providing Humanity with raw materials for further survival and development. As the need for corn doubles, and as science further widens knowledge on the use/utilization of the crop, creating more avenue and approaches where corn grains, leaves, silk, stem, root and other parts of the plant can be transformed into countless products, then the need to devote more hectares of land to Corn production becomes imperative. Corn has been shown to have the potential to be used in combating global food insecurity, as an indicator-crop for soil fertility assessment and as a commercial cash crop for income generation. Production of Corn has reduce poverty rate and raise standard of living of farmers, especially in the poor/developing countries.

The study was conducted to determine the influence of different soil types and mineral fertilizer on maize (Zea mays L.) growth for effective production, soil fertility improvement and food security, at the Teaching and Research Green house, Obubra, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Cross River University of Technology, Nigeria. Ikom Local White, maize variety were treated to one level of NPK (15:15:15) mineral fertilizer (0.06 kg ha-1) and four different soil types (sandy, clay, sandy loam and loamy soils). Soil samples were analyzed before and after maize cultivation to determine the influence of the mineral fertilizer on soil/plant performance. Ring method of fertilizer application was employed to apply fertilizer at the same rate to all the soil types. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The treatments were replicated four times to give a total of twenty polybags. The result obtained indicates that soil type-fertilizer treatment (STFT) increased (p = 0.05) the growth of maize and further increased (N, P, K, Ca, Na, Mg, Organic Matter, Cation Exchange Capacity including pH) over the control, with loamy soil - 0.06 kg ha-1 NPK (15:15:15) mineral fertilizer treatment significantly (p< 0.05) increased the growth parameters (plant height and number of leaves of maize) over all other treatments, and closely followed by sandy loam-0.06 kg ha-1 NPK (15:15:15) mineral fertilizer treatment (T3(SL)). Loamy soil-mineral fertilizer treatment seems responsive and effective for productive maize cultivation, for soil fertility improvement and food security.

Opis:
Agroforestry system relies heavily on the choice of suitable tree species that should offer diversity of benefits and show compatibility with food crops. A 3 × 4 × 2 factorial design in a split-split plot design was used for this experiment in three replicates for two years. The considered factors were; biomass species (Albizia lebbeck and Parkia biglobosa, and control) as main plots, four rates of nitrogen (0, 40, 80, 120 kg N ha-1) as sub-plots, and two maize varieties (DMR-ESR-7 and 2009 EVAT) as sub-sub plots. A. lebbeck (45.3, 52.9) attained early days to 50% tasselling and silking than P. biglobosa (46, 53.9) in combined means respectively. It is therefore, concluded that incorporation of A. lebbeck with application of fertilizer from 40 kg N ha-1 to 120 kg N ha-1 rate into the soil improved the production of tasselling and silking of 2009 EVAT over DMR-ESR-7 maize variety. And the combinations of Albizia and varieties of maize shortened days to 50% tasselling and silking than Parkia.

Opis:
Declining soil fertility is one of the main causes of low yields of maize. Farmers apply low rates of unbalanced nutrients leading to further nutrient mining. A randomized complete block nutrient omission trial with six replications was therefore set to determine maize response to the application of a wide range of nutrients from inorganic fertilizers on Ferralsols. The treatments were NK, NP, PK, NPK, and NPK + CaMgZnBS. The results showed that application of PK fertilizer resulted in low crop growth rate (CGR), and relative growth rate (RGR), and biomass compared to other treatments. Application of a wider range of nutrients (NPK + CaMgZnBS treatment) improved maize growth and yield compared to other treatments. In terms of grain response, Urea application recorded the highest yield (1800 kg/ha) followed by Triple Superphosphate (1300 kg/ha) then Muriate of potash (1100 kg/ha) and least by a combined application of secondary nutrients and micronutrients (ZnBMgCaS = 400 kg/ha). Highest agronomic efficiency of 32.5 kg grain /kg P applied was recorded due to P followed by K (27.5 kg grain /kg K) and least by N (15 kg grain /kg N). Based on the combined effect, application of N-P-K based fertilizers could give better yields. Use of micronutrients should be assessed further for conclusive recommendations.
